base line 8(6): 163 ON THE CATALOGING/CATALOGUING FRONT

oeLe is now accepting applications from libraries interested in becoming Enhance participants. Any library, regardless of type or size, can apply; the only stipUlation being that the library has to have used the DeLe cataloging subsystem for two years. Libraries that ~ere turned down in the past may reapply by sending in a new application and new sample records.

Applications are being taken for all formats except serials. A separate application form must be sent for each format if the library wishes to apply for more than one. The deadline is January 31, 1988. For more information and application forms, contact your network office. Independent institutions should contact the Online Data Quality Control Section at OCLC.

The Cataloging and Classification Committee's Midwinter meeting will be Sunday, January 10, 1988, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the North America Room of the El Tropicano Hotel.

The RTSD/CCS/MAGERT Discussion Group's Midwinter meeting will be Monday, January 11, 1988, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 207 of the San ~ntonio Convention Center. The topic of discussion will be ~ administering grant funds for map cataloging projects .. This will include identifying funding sources, defining a proposal topic, documenting a project, and some of the problems that may be ~ncountered. David Cobb of the University of Illinois will lead the discussion.

The ' Subject Cataloging Division had been considering a proposal to discontinue indirect geographic subdivision of headings in favor of direct subdivision. Their invitation for comments and opinions elicited a "highly vocal" response from the American library community and several libraries in Canada and abroad as well. The majority of the responses opposed the proposal.

Several points were made by those opposing the proposal. The first was that a majority of libraries still use card catalogs and even those with online catalogs often do not use systems sophisticated enough to fUlly exploit direct subdivision. Another was that many geographic qualifiers are abbreviated in accordance with AACR2 and it would require either a system with keyword sea=ching and truncation capability or a search for both a full and an abbreviated form of name in order to retrieve all material inVOlving a particular place. Finally, the work involved in updating eXisting catalogs, whether manual or online, would be prohibitive.

The Subject Cataloging Division considered these points and discussed the issue at a meeting of the RTSD/CCS/Subject Ana~ysis Committee at the San Francisco Annual Conference. At the conclusion of the discussion, it was announced that a change to direct subdivision would not be made in the forseeable future. (Paraphrased from Cataloging Service BUlletin, No. 38)

'I Jl....! ~_ OHIO IS OHIO BUT WHAT IS ~CENTRAL STATES"? or, a Comparison of the MARC 052 and LCSH by Catherine Leonardi

[Ed. note: Catherine Leonardi is at Duke University Library. This article was originally written for the MAGERT Cataloging and Classification committee.]

When cataloging a map of Ohio the LC subject heading and MARC field 052 (Geographic Classification Code) are readily apparent. There is a subject heading, Ohio, that precisely fits an 052 (which in this case is 4080 for Ohio.) However, when cataloging multi-state maps of the United States there is not such a nice relationship between the LC sUbject he?dings and the LC G classification schedule from which the 052 is derived.

This article is a comparison of the MARC field 052 and the corresponding LC subject headings for U. S. regions. The LC G schedule, 4th ed., has a set of U. S. maps on pp. 42-46 which will be referred to in the article.

Some 052s for U. S. regions correlate very well with a specific subject heading. In other cases there is not a close match. If there is not a close matCh, this paper will suggest possible subject headings. The actual subject headings assigned to a map will have to depend on the geographic area covered by the map.

The first map, p.42, divides the U. S. into East and West. There is a subject heading, West (U. S.), for the West but not a corresponding subject heading for the East. Maps of the eastern U. S. do exist. A quick perusal of LC cataloging shows that LC will generally assign to an eastern U. S. map one or more of the follOWing subject headings: United States, Mississippi River Valley, Northeastern States, or Southern States.

The next map, p. 43, divides the U. S. into four areas: Northeastern states, Southeastern States, Northwestern States, and Southwestern States. All four of these are LC subject headings, right? Wrong! Three are subject headings. Southeastern States is the odd man out. There is a cross reference from Southeastern States to Southern States.

The map on p. 44 also splits the U. S. into four sections: Pacific and Mountain States, Central states, South Central States, and Atlantic States. Atlantic States is an LC subject heading. The most closely- related subject headings for the other regions are: Southern states for South Central States; Middle West or Mississippi River Valley for Central States; and Rocky Mountains (region], Pacific States, or West (U. S.) for the Pacific and Mountain States.

The U. S. map on p. 45 is divided into five areas: Pacific Northwest, New Southwest, North Central States, Southern states, and Northeast Atlantic States. Pacific Northwest fits the subject heading Northwest, pacific, except for a scope note indicating that the subject heading, Northwest, Pacific also includes the province of British Columbia. New Southwest transforms into the subject heading Southwest, New. North Central States is the same area as Central States on p. 44. base line 8(6): 165 Southern States is a subject heading but Northeast Atlantic is not. The subject headings of New England and Middle Atlantic states cover the same area as the Northeast Atlantic States. The last map, p. 46, divides the U. S. into nine areas. Some of the areas have corresponding subject headings: Pacific states for the area Pacific States, New England for the area New England, Middle Atlantic states for the area Middle Atlantic States, and South Atlantic States for the area Southeast Atlantic States [not an exact match: Southeast Atlantic states area also includes West virginia]. The East North Central States area covers the same territory.as the subject heading, Northwest, Old. The G schedule places the Old Southwest in the West South Central States area (which is Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas), but according to an LC subject heading scope note the subject heading, Southwest, Old, covers Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri. The remaining three areas don't have closely related subject headings. The East South Central States area best fits the subject heading, Southern States; West North Central States area fits the ,subject headings, Middle West or Northwestern States; Rocky Mountain ~tates area fits the sUbject headings, West (U. S.) or Rocky Mountains [region]. There are three other broad subject headings that cover large ~arts of the U. S.: Great Plains, Sunbelt states, and Lake states. According to an LC scope note Sunbelt States covers the Southern and Southwestern states as well as Hawaii. Lake States refers to states bordering the Great lakes. Based on the preceding comments, I suggest that: 1) LC should consider establishing a subject heading East (u, s.). 2) There should be some indication in the G schedule, both on the maps p. 44-45 and within the schedule, that the Central States G4040 and the North Central States G4060 are the same area and that only one number, G4040, be used for this area. 3) LC should consider giving scope notes for Middle West and Northwestern States. 4) LC should consider including West Vi~Ginia in the subject heading, South Atlantic States, so that it matches the area, Southeast Atlantic States. 5) Old Southwest would better fit G393S, not G3990, based on the scope note in LCSH. By their very nature regions do not have specific boundaries. However, this article attempted to loosely correlate the 052 with LC subject headings for U. S. regions. The following chart is a summary of the relationships.

What the Guide to U.S. Map Resources and Map Collections in the United States and Canada do for U.S. and Canadian map collections, the Scholars' Guide to Washington, D.. C. for Cartographic and Remote Sensing Imagery does. and does more, for D.C. cartographic resource collections. Everything about this guide/directory is excellent: the contents. layout. indexing, scope, cross-referencing, etc. It is the 12th title in the Scholars' Guide Series; the third devoted to format (film/video and audio collections were the previous two). base line 8(6): 169 The Scholars' Guide covers over 200 collections and organizations, including libraries, archives, galleries, museums, embassies, U.S. and international organizations, federal, state and local government agencies, data banks, and academic programs and departments. Each entry provides the address, telephone number, contact person, hours and conditions for access, reproduction services, size, and detailed description of holdings and . Entries vary in length and detail, ranging from a quarter-page description, to nearly 30 pages. There are five separate indexes: personal names, subject, geographic (remote sensing images), geographic (maps), and organizations and institutions. Due to overlap of the scope of many of the collections and organizations identified in the Scholars' GUide, cross-references are numerous and very useful. Thus, by using the indexes or browsing anyone of the sections and using the cross- references, one will locate the appropriate collection(s). The fact that such a guide was published, indicates the importance placed on the use cartographic resources in research by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. This is reiterated and reinforced in Alan K. Henrikson's preface, nFrameworks for the World.n In his discussion of maps, charts, and other graphic representations, Dr. Henrikson states, nperhaps no other medium of communication enables us to comprehend so much, so accurately, so quickly." The Scholars' Guide is a must for anyone doing cartographic research in the washington, D.C. area. It is difficult to imagine doing cartographic research in D.C. without it! Any map and/or government publications department should add this title to its collection--it will be a valuable and frequently used addition. It is the guide to cartographic resources for the Washington, D.C area and, very possibly, U.S. Government cartographic collections. (JW).

ISBN 0906430046. £.42.00. According to the dust cover of this volume, "Cartographic Innovations is intended as a reference book for all those working in the history of cartography and also for modern cartographers who may be interested to see that many of the techniques employed today originated decades and sometimes centuries earlier than is generally thought ...Book is designed as a history of cartographieal innovations and their diffusion." This is a book that successfully lives up to its expectations and promises. The arrangement is very logical and the table of contents guides the user to all parts carefUlly. The list of illustrations identifies the 25 selected examples of maps which serve as very appropriate cases for each discussion. The introduction states that the purpose of the volume was to identify on a worldwide scale the main points of advance and change in the science and art of cartography. Nearly 200 mapping terms are divided into eight groups and each entry is then divided into sections which form the context of the book. They are definition, details of innovation and diffusion and . The entire history of map making is chronicled with detail and specificity. The thematic arrangement separates eight bodies of cartographic materials with conceptual discussions of changes in the map through the ages. A general treatment of maps is followed by maps of human occupation and activities and of natural phenomena. Many examples document the kinds of data explained by various mapping strategies and formats. Significant discussions allow for one to understand mapping reference systems and geodetic concepts, symbolism, techniques and media, methods of duplicating and transcribing maps pluS what constitutes the atlas over history. A reader gets real insight into how mapping was done and what the product of a map reveals. Besides developing a firm appreciation of what the science and art of cartography entail, one learns about map collections. and why certain procedures were practiced prior to the twentieth century, and the great value mapmaking has in our current studies. The list of contributors to this volume is impressive in itself. The index is complete with subheadings and references to many relationships of each innovator or innovation to form and context. In addition to their content, books are reviewed and evaluated by their finished product. This volume is well laid out, and the presentation is crisp and clear. Cartographic Innovations belongs in all academic and large public libraries, regardless of how rich their map collections are. It provides readers an appreciation of the past and the significant history maps convey about all subjects and offers a welcome addition to the existing collections on mapping and the history of cartography.
