The Company’s brief is to generate industry, tourism and regional development in the wider Shannon area, known as the Shannon Region. This covers an area of some 10,000 square kilometres spanning counties Clare, Limerick, North Tipperary, South Offaly and North Kerry, which collectively have a population of over 407,000. The mission of Shannon Development is Pioneering Regional Development for the Knowledge Age, and over the past forty years the Company has worked, singularly and with many different ‘partners’ from the statutory, community and private sectors, to develop the region to its full potential. I would like to thank the Very Reverend Gary Paulsen for allowing me take photographs of memorials in Clonlara, Mountshannon and Killaloe, and the Rev Bob Hanna and Edwin Bailey for access to St Columba’s Church and Kilnasoolagh Church. In the last few weeks I travelled to 46 Cemeteries throughout Clare. They were mainly on the sites of old churches, monasteries or abbeys, with fascinating histories. The monks certainly had an eye for beauty and selected peaceful settings for their work. Some were on islands, nearly all were on hills, and they invariably were overlooking rivers, lakes, Lough Derg, the Shannon, the Shannon Estuary or the Atlantic. The views from some were spectacular. Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), Scattery Island, Clareabbey, Quin Abbey, Killone Abbey, St Flannan’s Cathedral Killaloe, are amongst the most beautiful sites in Clare. -

Abstract Social and network analyses that incorporate information on individuals within a population enhance our knowledge of complex species. In this study, the social struc- ture of wild bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon Estuary, Ireland, was analyzed by examining the dynamics of the whole population and then of individuals classed by sex, age, and area. One hundred and twenty-one dolphins were identified during 522 sightings between 2012 and 2015. The mean half-weight association index (HWI) of the population was 0.07 Æ 0.02. The highest HWIs for individuals of known sex were for female-male pairs. Mean within-class HWI was significantly higher than mean between-class HWI for both age and area classes. -

MID-WEST REGIONAL PLANNING GUIDELINES 2010 – 2022 Vol.1 Mid-West Regional Authority Údarás Réigiúnach an Mhean-Iarthair Mid-West Regional Planning Guidelines 2010 – 2022 FoReWoRd It is my pleasure to present the Mid-West Regional Planning Guidelines 2010-2022. The first Regional Plan- ning Guidelines for the Mid-West Region were produced to cover the period 2004-2016. The new Guidelines learn from and build upon these earlier Guidelines bringing them up to date and reflecting current and an- ticipated development trends in the Mid-West Region. They also take into consideration new legislation that was introduced in 2010, i.e. The Planning and Development (Amendment) Act which requires local planning authorities to develop ‘core strategies’ consistent with these Regional Planning Guidelines and the National Spatial Strategy. The review of the 2004 Guidelines comes at a time of great change in the economic climate both worldwide and in Ireland. There is no doubt that these changes present real challenges to policy makers and implementa- tion bodies at a local, regional and national Government level. However, they also create both an opportunity and a necessity to improve policy development mechanisms and coordination across implementation bodies so that the country and its regions are well positioned to benefit from and contribute to future economic improvement. The Guidelines offer a long term strategic planning framework for the Mid-West Region and have been developed through a collaborative process involving elected representatives, Local Authorities and other public bodies in the region, private sector and civil society organisations and members of the public. These Guidelines are set within the overall policy framework established by the National Spatial Strategy first adopted in 2002 and updated in 2010 and the National Development Plan 2007-2013. -

This special edition of the IWDG e-zine is dedicated to one of our newest members, Celtic Mist. Below is a brief biography charting her voyage from birth to date as documented though the eyes of fellow IWDG members. CELTIC MIST OFFERED TO IWDG March 2011 In March 2011, the family of the late Charles J. Haughey made a very generous offer to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, in the form of a steel hulled 56ft yacht with six berths in four Cabins called Celtic Mist. This gift was in recognition of Mr. Haughey’s lifelong love for the sea and respect for the work of the IWDG. On the 7 th June 1991 Charles J. Haughey officially declared Irish Waters a Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary. After much consideration and a range of commissioned surveys, IWDG Director Fiacc O ‘Brolchain and a team of volunteers thoroughly inspected the yacht which was lying in the Isle of Wight in England and recommended that the IWDG accept the offer. Skipper Fiacc O ‘Brolchain travelled over to the Isle of Wight with his crew and sailed Celtic Mist back to Ireland. On arrival in Waterford, the vessel joined the Tall Ships Race 2011 from Waterford to Greenock. Celtic Mist is a fantastic resource for all IWDG members. IWDG intend to use Celtic Mist to train and teach IWDG members how to survey and record whales and dolphins, including using acoustic survey techniques. It will also be used for dedicated research projects and professional training and development. TALL SHIPS RACE July 2011 After a weekend of celebrations and festivities in Waterford at the Festival, Celtic Mist had been thoroughly cleaned, refueled and provisioned for its voyage to Scotland as the only Irish entry for 2011. -

Trevor holds a Qualifications Master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Systems from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc. Sustainable Energy Systems honours degree in Civil Engineering following his studies at Edinburgh Napier University University, YEAR and Cork Institute of Technology. Trevor is part of the Energy and Environment division at FT and is a chartered member of Engineers Ireland. His primary area of expertise is in BSc. (Hons), Civil Engineering the planning, design and construction of renewable energy projects. University, YEAR Trevor gained much of his experience in wind farm development working on a large BEng.
