Bill Martin COACH: 1959-1983 DECEASED: 2000

Coach Martin was competitive to the core and had a thorough understanding of the game that helped him maximize his player’s talents. Not one to sugarcoat player performance, his players knew where to focus on improvements. Coach Martin understood that a majority of baseball is mental, both in personal discipline and knowing where the play is at all times, knowing what the count is at all times, knowing where you are at in the lineup if you are on the mound. He kept paper in his back pocket for only one reason, to record mental errors. Bad throws or a missed catch were unfortunate. Throwing to the wrong base, missing a sign, not knowing where to be on a back up were inexcusable. The mental errors were the ones that led to opponent runs and lost ballgames and were preventable in his view. Coach Martin had a lasting impact on many of his players, like Max Weibel, a member of the 1976 and 1977 state tournament teams, who said, “He developed my coaching style by holding his players accountable for their actions. You knew where you stood as a player because he didn’t mince any words. Maybe at the time, it was tough, but he got me ready for the real world. He was the best coach I ever played for, but I didn’t realize it until I became a coach myself.” Ed Waylock, a member of the 1980 and 1981 state championship team, added, “He had a good touch when needed as far as key calls within the game and lineup changes were concerned. The players liked to refer to his style as throwing ball bag and bats on the field and letting us play.” - Provided by Coach Martin’s son, Steve Martin and Oconomowoc Enterprise Sports Editor, Mark Hutchinson

Ed Rux COACH: 1964-1999

Ed is no longer able to speak due to his illness but in his induction into the WFCA Hall of Fame in 1999 he was quoted as saying: “This is an award that is shared by the people of my City. Those players who have allowed me to coach them share the greater portion of the award. The hundreds of young men who have worked hard for the victories are the pride of the OHS program. It was they who worked in the classroom, worked in the off-season, and worked their hardest each practice to achieve in every contest.” Ed also acknowledged the many great assistant coaches that he had the pleasure of working with through the years that helped establish the fine Football Tradition at OHS. - Provided by Coach Rux’s son, Steve Rux

Steve Wagner ATHLETE: 1969-1972

Friday nights were a special place under the lights at the Armory. I remember the smell of the grass and how dewy it would get late in the season and late in the game, how the chalk lines stuck to your jersey when you tackled someone. I grew up watching the games, seeing Oconomowoc win, then running onto the field right after to get in a quick game of touch with my buddies before the lights shut off and how the entire town came out to see their team compete. It was a civic event; everyone’s pride was on the line. Nothing was more important than winning on Friday night in front of our town. It is an unforgettable part of my life. - Steve Wagner
