A mainstay in the Milwaukee baseball program, Doffek enters his 14th sea- son with the Panther coaching staff after spending the previous 12 years as the assistant head coach. He continues to lead the Milwaukee offense to great success at the plate, with six regulars batting over .300 last season, including two fi nishing in the top 10 in the league. His squad recorded 25-plus wins for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons, with his 25 victories a year ago breaking the program mark for wins by fi rst-year head coach, which had been 21. His team also reeled off the longest winning streak since the 2001 season (eight games) and set a program record when it scored more than 10 runs in seven consecutive games in May, breaking the old standard of fi ve-straight 10-plus run outings. After a slow start where the team played series against nationally-ranked Arkansas and Kentucky and also against eventual NCAA-Tournament participant Austin Peay, the Panthers righted the ship to go 23-15 the rest of the regular season. After posting two postseason victories, they had their season come to a heartbreaking close in extra innings of the semifi nals at the Horizon League Tournament. Doffek was named the seventh head coach in the history of the Milwaukee baseball program on Sept. 25, 2006. “I feel extremely blessed to have been given this opportunity,” Doffek said at the time. “The great thing is that I am coming into a position I’m very familiar with, especially when it comes to the day-to-day duties of all baseball operations. This roster is fi lled with players I have been working with all along and the guys know the way I work and what I expect of them. At the same time, I know how they work and what they expect from us. I see it as a very smooth transition.” As the assistant head coach in the past, he worked primarily with the team’s hitting and defensive units while also serving as the lead recruiter and over- seeing the day-to-day operations of the program. The 2006 season - his last as the assistant - will go down as a memorable one, as the Panthers won 30+ games for the sixth time since UWM moved to the NCAA Division I level in 1991, going 32-25 overall. Doffek led the offense to great heights, with seven regulars batting over .300, paced by All-American outfi elder Mike Goetz. Doffek helped guide Goetz to a .493 average on the season - the highest in the nation - in addition to hitting streaks of 32 and 27 games and team records in seven categories. Goetz went on to be drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers. As a team, the Panthers batted .324, the 16th-best average in the nation. His squad also ranked in the national leaders in doubles (third at 2.51 per game), slugging percentage (18th at .488), triples (35th), and runs (48th). UWM set a team record in doubles (143) and ended in the top fi ve in the record book in MMILWAUKEEILWAUKEE PPANTHERSANTHERS BBaseballaseball

West Virginia Open History Compiled by Bob Baker 1933: Johnny Javins, the pro at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, defeated pro I. C. ""Rocky''' Schorr of Bluefield Country Club in an 18-hole playoff at Kanawha Country Club in South Charleston to win the first West Virginia Open. Javins shot a 76 in the playoff while Schorr had an 82. They agreed to split first and second place money but Javins got the trophy donated by George C. Weimer of St. Albans. Javins and Schorr had tied after 72 holes of medal play with 302 scores. Schorr held a five-stroke lead over the field and an 11-stroke edge over Javins after two rounds but faltered on the second 36-hole day. Schorr's troubles started when he took a nine on the par-four third hole, needing five strokes to get out of a trap. Javins began his comeback with a 69 in the third round to pick up all 11 strokes on Schorr. The West Virginia Professional Golfers Association was formed in a meeting a month before the tournament, with Schorr the first president. As a part of the Centennial Celebration, The Valley is naming all-centennial teams for each of the Valley’s sponsored sports, including baseball The list of the top players and all-time greatest coach was determined through online fan voting (www.mvc100.org), with input from a centennial committee. More than 500 votes were cast for baseball while all nine of the current league institutions have at least two representatives on the team. Fans voted for players from 1975-present, while a centennial committee recognized players who were in the league prior to 1975 (see page three of release for The Early Years). Joe Carter of Wichita State was the top vote-getter . The league’s Player of the Year award is named after the former Shocker. Gene Stephen- son of Wichita State was voted the all-time greatest coach in MVC Baseball history, which includes an historic run to an NCAA National Champion- ship in 1989. Included in the list are former and current Major League Baseball greats, members of institutional as well as the Valley Hall of Fame and na- tional collegeiate players of the year in baseball.
