Your body of work and dedication while at Oconomowoc High School has inspired many and helped shape the Athletic 2018-19 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Department into what it is today. Our goal is to induct many individuals into the OHS Athletic Hall CHAIRPERSON: Kevin Flegner of Fame over the coming years, but this class of inductees will stand out as our inaugural class. VICE CHAIR: Carrie Vande Zande While on your athletics journey, there were many TREASURER: people who had the opportunity to watch and Beth Loppnow support you. Back in the mid-1950s, I had the honor of playing football and baseball for Mr. Virgil Licht and Mr. Bill Martin. Along with basketball and our State Baseball Championship. OHS sports provided me with tremendous experiences that prepared me for a rather full life. Wow! He is one of the hardest working coaches I have ever seen. I was rewarded many times by the efforts that so many young athletes worked too hard to make our teams winners. I’m very thankful to be chosen for this great award. Not one to sugarcoat player performance, his players knew where to focus on improvements. Coach Martin understood that a majority of baseball is mental, both in personal discipline and knowing where the play is at all times, knowing what the count is at all times, knowing where you are at in the lineup if you are on the mound. He kept paper in his back pocket for only one reason, to record mental errors. Bad throws or a missed catch were unfortunate. Throwing to the wrong base, missing a sign, not knowing where to be on a back up were inexcusable. The mental errors were the ones that led to opponent runs and lost ballgames and were preventable in his view. Coach Martin had a lasting impact on many of his players, like Max Weibel, a member of the 1976 and 1977 state tournament teams, who said, “He developed my coaching style by holding his players accountable for their actions. You knew where you stood as a player because he didn’t mince any words.
