This paper combines Michel Foucault’s discourses and archaeologies with Hayden White’s narrative structures and Irit Rogoff’s criticality in a critical historiography of the discursive construction of tradition in English language accounts of Japanese architecture after World War II. It examines how a cross-section of key survey texts have narrated Japanese architecture through tropes of tradition, across the congealing of discourses in the 1950s and 1960s, perpetuation in the 1980s and diffusion at the beginning of the twenty-first

He gave me the opportunity to be part of his laboratory and have the invaluable experience of working under his supervision. I would like to additionally thank my sub-supervisor Prof. Yusuke Obuchi for his advice and critiques, which always challenged my work and allowed me to do a better job. I appreciated all of our meetings; they motivated me and pushed me to do better. I am deeply grateful to Arata Isozaki, Fumihiko Maki, Itsuko Hasegawa, Hiromi Fujii, Botond Bognar and Tom Heneghan for giving me the opportunity to interview them and helping me to broaden my study. Without their input, this study would not be nearly so rich in content. Thanks to Prof. Jordan Sand, Prof. Dana Buntrock, Prof. Maren Harnack, Prof. Hajime Yatsuka and Prof. Seng Kuan for having the time to meet with me, discussing the topics of this thesis, and giving me valuable feedback. Many thanks to Kaon Ko for her generous help while conducting the interviews and with the subsequent translation. Thanks as well to Denton Clark and Marisa Cassidy for assisting with transcription and translation. I would further like to thank all the members of Kuma Lab for their collaboration, and MEXT for giving me the opportunity to study in Japan. I owe a lot to my parents, Lena and Sotir, and my brother Daniel for their unconditional support, love and care in the things that I do.

  • Paolo Riani: “Uncharted Territories” Di Giancarlo Cavallini
TRIUMPH IN ITALY www.

What makes someone spend $1000 at the Ritz Paris, or $9,000 at the Burj Al Arab in Dubai? For many, being utterly pampered in an extravagant environment with a distinguished and personalized service is what defines luxury. The new millennium has brought a whole new perspective on luxury hotels; who knows what trends will be next. At luxury hotels, there are guests who return again to hotels that resemble their own opulent residences. Some stay to experience the luxury that others take for granted. There are business travelers who enjoy the residential setting with state-of-the-art technology, and there are others who don’t feel comfortable staying in a traditional setting. Therefore, catering to the needs of returning guests or new guests, business or leisure travelers, and young or old travelers is challenging.
