With Michel Foucault‘s notion of bio-power as a foil, the article aims firstly to discuss how influential aesthetic, biological and political concepts such as vitalism (Hans Driesch) and degeneration (Max Nordau) can be conceived as different reactions to Charles Darwin‘s On the Origin of the Species in the light of bio-power. -

Painted at a time in the 1 8 th century when the prevalent and popular manner was that better known to us by the works o f the notable Frenchmen, Largillibre, Nattier, De Troy and others, these two painters caught something o f the naivété and grace which marked the productions of these men. In so clear a degree is this observed, not so much in genre, as in portraiture, that the presumption is, although it is not on record, at any rate as regards Pilo, that they must both have studied at some time in the French capital. N o other painters of note, indigenous to the soil o f Denmark, had allowed their sense of grace such freedom to so express itself. -

Helfer My dissertation examines selected German and Danish literary texts of the late nineteenth century that employ ideological notions of nationalism for the purpose of constructing and stabilizing national identity. The groundwork for the research centers on specific times in nationalist movements in Europe and a specific setting on the border region of Schleswig-Holstein. The urgency of this project lies especially in the effort to understand the shifting qualities and perceptions of nationalism as both a destructive and productive force in current discourses of globalization. In my analysis of four literary narratives, Theodor Storm’s novellas Ein grünes Blatt (1850) and Abseits (1863), Theodor Fontane’s Unwiederbringlich (1891), and Herman Bang’s Tine (1889), I demonstrate how national identity is constructed on the basis of a firm nationalism and constantly destabilized when confronted with the presence ii of an Other by the border. -

Af Francis Beckett. Allerede 1846, mens Constantin Flansen arbejdede paa Forhallens Udsmykning, planlagde Wilhelm. -

Bagside: Otto Haslund: Professor Emil Christian Hansen, 1897, Carlsberg Museum.
