On a leisurely or half day walk it is also advisable to have a drink and snack with you for the usual break.

REMINDERS WHILST WALKING Please observe the Country Code. Please check frequently that the person BEHIND you is in sight, especially at junctions. Boots are recommended for all walks. When walking on roads, keep to the right except when approaching a right hand bend.

DOGS Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and not become a nuisance to other people. Owners should consult the leader in case the walk is unsuitable for dogs.

DOUGLAS MACVICAR

Sadly, Douglas MacVicar passed away on 18th April at Kingston Hospital at the age of 90. His funeral was held at St Paul's Church East Molesey on 12th May and was attended by a large congregation which included 14 Club members, both past and present. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife Margaret and family.

Douglas joined the Club 30 years ago when he retired from the Civil Service. He used to lead short walks and took on the role of Treasurer for some time. Later he agreed to be the auditor of the Club’s accounts. We understand he kept himself busy to almost the end of his life. He will be remembered by his family for his great sense of humour.

ANNE BROWN

Sadly, Anne Brown also passed away recently, on 25th May at the age of 73. Anne was a member of the Club for almost 40 years and used to organise the ‘Family Ambles’. She was also actively involved as Secretary of the Elmbridge U3A and with other organisations, from which she made many long lasting friendships. Anne enjoyed singing and was an enthusiastic member of the U3A Choir.

A celebration of her life was held at St Mary’s Church, Walton-on-Thames on 7th June when the U3A Choir sang in her memory. 16 Club members attended. We offer our sincere condolences to her husband Ken, daughter Emma and family.

AUTUMN WEEKEND AWAY - ST ALBANS 22nd - 25th SEPTEMBER 2017

We shall be staying at the 4 star Mercure Noke Hotel, Watford Road, St Albans AL2 3DS, which has easy access to the town centre. The hotel has a health club with swimming pool. Parking is free. St Albans is reached easily by car or train (change at Wimbledon for the train to St Albans).

St Albans was Roman Verulamium. Many Roman ruins remain, including the theatre. The Verulamium Museum focuses on what life was like in Roman times. St Albans has a Norman cathedral, a 15th century clock tower and a traditional market on Saturdays.

Walks could include the 3 mile city trail, the Ver Valley and the River Ver Trail. There are short circular walks based round the stops of the local train, the Abbey Flyer.

The cost for 3 nights’ bed breakfast and evening meal, twin or double rooms, is £219 per person. There is no single supplement. Optional insurance is available for £10. Cheques payable to Surrey Walks Club. Please complete and return the booking form by 20th July 2017.

SWC LEISURELY HOLIDAYS 2018

A Working Party has been formed to identify holidays of a leisurely nature for Spring and Autumn 2018.

The intention is to provide holidays, as an alternative to HF Guided Walking, for members who prefer a less strenuous holiday. If you feel this may suit you then please register your interest by completing and returning the enclosed form as detailed by 16th July 2017. This will help the Working Party to decide on suitable holidays.

Please note that registering an interest does not commit you to anything and any holidays that are arranged will be advertised in future programmes.
