7 September 2012 For immediate use Date: 7 September 2012 Great offers from West Oxfordshire attractions The popular West Oxfordshire Week (WOW) is back this September with many local attractions throwing open their doors to give free or discounted entry to the district’s residents. On the 15 and 16 September, residents will be able to book an exclusive visit to see some amazing animals at Heythrop Zoological Gardens. The company has been supplying animals to the film and television industry since 1977. Jim Clubb from Amazing Animals at Heythrop Zoological Gardens said: “This will be a fun- packed weekend for all of the family. We are taking a totally different approach this year, to provide a brand new interactive experience.” April Millin from Carterton (pictured left) and Emily Pratley- Hutt from Hailey (pictured right) are planning to take advantage of West Oxfordshire Week discounts and have already picked up their vouchers from the Witney Visitor Information Centre. Emily said, "I'm a big fan of performing pets and I am planning to visit the Heythrop Zoological Park where they supply animals for TV and films." April said, “I didn’t realise the country’s only crocodile zoo was based in the district. That’s the one for me.” Between 17 and 23 September there will be many other local attractions offering discounts for residents. These include favourites such as Blenheim Palace, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Oxford Bus Museum, Rousham House Gardens, Cogges Manor Farm in Witney and the Local History Museum in Chipping Norton. On Sunday 23 September West Oxfordshire’s very own ‘Croc Man’ is offering ‘2 for 1’ entry to ‘Crocodiles of the World’, Britain’s only crocodile zoo, based in Crawley near Witney. Highlights include seeing Black caiman crocodiles and other reptile species, with eye to eye encounters from underwater viewing enclosures. Residents can also discover more about their local district by joining guided tours of historical Woodstock, the Witney Wool Trail and the village of Filkins, which is followed by a cream tea at Cotswold Woollen Weavers. Cllr Richard Langridge, Cabinet Member for Economy and Local Communities at the District Council, said: “We support West Oxfordshire’s tourism industry and work to promote the area as a must-see visitor attraction. This special week is about getting local residents involved and we hope that many people will take advantage of these great offers to find out what fantastic attractions there are on their doorstep.” To enjoy the discounts local residents need to collect a voucher sheet from visitor information centres in Burford or Witney, The Guildhall in Chipping Norton, the Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock and most libraries across the district. It is necessary to book for some of the attractions in advance.     Highways 8.9 As a largely rural district the highway network plays a key role in West Oxfordshire. The main routes include the A40 Cheltenham to Oxford, the A44 through Woodstock and Chipping Norton, the A361 Swindon to Banbury and the A4260 from Banbury through the eastern part of the District. These are shown on the Key Diagram (Figure 4.1). The provision of a good, reliable and congestion free highway network has a number of benefits including the provision of convenient access to jobs, services and facilities and the potential to unlock and support economic growth. Under the draft Local Plan, the importance of the highway network will continue to be recognised with necessary improvements to be sought where appropriate. This will include the delivery of strategic highway improvements necessary to support growth. 8.10 The A40 is the main east-west transport route with congestion on the section between Witney and Oxford being amongst the most severe transport problems in Oxfordshire and acting as a potential constraint to economic growth. One cause of the congestion is insufficient capacity at the Wolvercote and Cutteslowe roundabouts (outside the District) with the traffic lights and junctions at Eynsham and Cassington (inside the District) adding to the problem. Severe congestion is also experienced on the A44 at the Bladon roundabout, particularly during the morning peak. Further development in the District will put additional pressure on these highly trafficked routes. 8.11 In light of these problems, Oxfordshire County Council developed its ‘Access to Oxford’ project and although Government funding has been withdrawn, the County Council is continuing to seek alternative funding for schemes to improve the northern approaches to Oxford, including where appropriate from new development.
