The novel takes place on All Soul’s Day, “the grey days after the Samhain”, when the dead return from purgatory and, according to local folklore, spend some time with the living. McCormack’s novel is Joycean in format and style, as the narrative is a continuous, open-ended sentence, and the dead come to posthumously reflect on the landscape of the world of those alive. This paper approaches McCormack’s novel, which narrates the tensions between the “ghostly” silence of an “individual”, Marcus Conway, who is already dead, and the need to recall and re-live in language, albeit through a monologue with exudes a frantic stream of consciousness, the futility of a varied landscape of life at the time of the recession in Ireland. McCormack skillfully ponders upon the overwhelming construct of silence in his novel. He embarks on the reflection of death as the silencing factor that, only on All Soul’s Day, through the return of the main protagonist, allows for the recall of those landscapes that are now only retrievable within the use of streams of post-consciousness.

New Insights in Pearse Hutchinson’s Image of Spanish Regionalism in the 1950s-1970s1 Verónica Membrive University of Almería (<[email protected]>) Abstract: After his journeys around a continent that was still licking the woun- ds of WWII, the Irish poet Pearse Hutchinson (1927-2012) chose Barcelona as his residence in different periods in the 1950s and the 1960s. There is considerable agreement in the notion that Hutchinson reflected the parallels between Spain and Ireland and both countries’ cultural and language oppression in his poetry (Veiga 2011; Keatinge 2011; Mittermaier 2017). Yet, the understanding of his involvement with Spain and its regions/nations is still limited. While existing li- terature on this issue relies heavily on the poetic production of the author, little attention has been paid to Hutchinson’s uncatalogued papers held at UCC and Maynooth U., which include unpublished poems, personal letters and postcards, annotations and his collec- tion of books. The purpose of this paper is to increase the existing knowledge about the poet’s representation of Spain and, in particu- lar, of the regions of Galicia and Catalonia. In his life as a poet Pearse Hutchinson, now in his 84th year, has engaged with the poetry and the cultures of many countries in Europe; at the heart of this work is his poetry of Spain. From his first visit there in 1950 to today Hutchinson has been inspired by the landscapes, people and languages of Spain, translating from Catalan, Castilian and Galician and writing memorable poems based on his own experiences and the history and politics of a country which he loves. His work brought an awareness of Spanish culture, life and literature to a wide audience in Ireland. Hutchinson is recording a prose memoir based on his life and travels in Spain and Portugal.
