  • The Original BAOR Divisions Closed Down
The Original British Army of the Rhine Richard A. Rinaldi © 2006 The first British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) was created in March 1919 to control troops in the British occupation zone along the Rhine. The Armistice that went into effect on 11 November 1918 provided for British, French and American troops to occupy bridgeheads across the Rhine River. The new army had five corps, each of two divisions, and a cavalry division. Regular units (other than cavalry) were largely withdrawn from BAOR divisions as they formed, with few remaining even to May 1919. While some New Armies and TF battalions survived as part of BAOR, the divisions were reinforced or continued with a large number of former training battalions. See Note 1 at the end for a discussion of the sources and conventions adopted for this material. It is quite likely that details of artillery in particular are incomplete. Where a division retained its former brigade numbers, it may be presumed that the wartime battalions were gone in or before March 1919, and they appear only where they remained at least to April 1919. See Note 2 for a discussion of the ‘50-series’ battalions. BAOR began organized as follows: II Corps Light Division (formed from 2nd Division) Southern Division (formed from 29th Division) IV Corps Lowland Division (formed from 9th Division) Highland Division (formed from 62nd Division) VI Corps Northern Division (formed from 3rd Division) London Division (formed from 41st Division) IX Corps Western Division (formed from 1st Division) Midland Division (formed from 6th Division) X Corps Lancashire Division (formed from 32nd Division) Eastern Division (formed from 34th Division) Cavalry Division (formed from 1st Cavalry Division) This force began to contract only five months later, with four divisions (Highland, Western, Midland and Eastern) and three corps (IV, VI and IX) closing down by the end of August.

Private Arthur Phillip FLUNDER Service Number: 16708 11th Battalion (Cambridge Pals) The Suffolk Regiment Died 1st July 1916 Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Pier and face 1C and 2A WW1 Centenary record of an Unknown Soldier Recruitment – 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment – Suffolks/Cambs – (Cambridge Pals) Private Arthur FLUNDER was a member of the 11th Suffolks, which was a service battalion known as the Cambs/Suffolks or Cambridge Pals. At the outbreak of the war, men of the County enlisting for Infantry were sent to the Suffolk Regiment Depot at Bury St Edmunds. This soon became overcrowded and a relief camp was formed in Cambridge. Battle of the Somme The plan was for the British forces to attack on a fourteen-mile front after an intense week-long artillery bombardment of the German positions. Over 1.6 million shells were fired, 70 for every one metre of front, the idea being to decimate the German Front Line. Two minutes before zero-hour, 19 mines were exploded under the German lines. Whistles sounded and the troops went over the top at 7.30am. They advanced in lines at a slow, steady pace across No Man's Land towards then German front line. Objective 9 – La Boisselle – The Somme - See fig 1. Attack on La Boisselle Private Arthur FLUNDER and the 11th Suffolks were assigned Objective 9, an attack on the village of La Boisselle. The village of La Boisselle was of huge strategic importance as it would open up the road to Bapaume. This would allow the Allies to attack Poziers, the next town further up the road then from there, Thiepval.

THE FRIENDS OF EXETER CATHEDRAL ANNUAL REPORT 2020 Pages 27–31 ‘1917 AND ALL THAT’ by Jonathan Walker ‘1917 AND ALL THAT’ It is not often that Hollywood has a link with Exeter Cathedral, but Sir Sam Mendes’ new blockbuster film ‘1917’ has created one. The film, which features cameo roles by Colin Firth and Dominic Cumberbatch, is set on the Western Front during The Great War and tells the story of two messengers who have to cross a surreal landscape, recently abandoned by the Germans, in order to deliver a message to a British battalion. That message aims to halt the unit’s intended suicidal attack, for the Germans have laid a trap. To say more, would be a ‘spoiler’ but the unit portrayed in the film is the 2nd Battalion The Devonshire Regiment – and Exeter Cathedral remains the spiritual home of the ‘Devons’, encompassing their regimental chapel of St Edmund. Before looking at the close association between the Devons and the Cathedral, what was the story of the county regiment’s contribution to The Great War? As with most regiments before the outbreak of the conflict, the Devons maintained two regular battalions of professional soldiers, a reserve battalion and three battalions of territorial (part-time) soldiers. There was a gulf between these units, with Lord Kitchener complaining, somewhat unjustly, that the Territorials were a collection of ‘middle-aged professional men who were allowed to put on uniform and play at soldiers’. Professional jealousy apart, it was clear that the British Army would have to be rapidly expanded, as the first weeks of the war decimated the ranks of the ‘old contemptibles’.

AUSTRALIAN JOINT COPYING PROJECT SUFFOLK REGIMENT ASSOCIATION Records, 1972-74 Reel M973 Suffolk Regiment Association The Keep Gibraltar Barracks Bury St Edmunds Suffolk IP33 3RN National Library of Australia State Library of New South Wales Filmed: 1976 HISTORICAL NOTE The Suffolk Regiment was raised by the Duke of Norfolk in 1685 to combat the Monmouth Rebellion and comprised men from the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. Originally known as the Duke of Norfolk’s Regiment of Foot, it was renamed the 12th Regiment of Foot in 1751. In 1782 it was called the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot and in 1880 it became the 12th (Suffolk) Regiment. It saw action in Ireland (1689-91) and in Europe in the War of Austrian Succession (1742-45) and the Seven Years War (1758-62). During the Napoleonic Wars it served in the West Indies, India and Mauritius. In 1854 the 1st Battalion of the 12th Regiment sailed to Australia, where it was based at Sydney. Shortly after its arrival, a detachment was sent to Port Phillip and it took part in the fighting at the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat on 3 December 1854. During their time in Australia, soldiers of the 12th Regiment often acted as convict guards. In April 1860 two companies of the 12th Regiment and half a battery of artillery were sent to New Zealand, where they served under Major General Thomas Pratt in fighting against Maori forces. In 1862 the headquarters of the battalion were transferred to Auckland and the remaining companies moved from Australia to New Zealand.
