  • The Fusilier Origins in Tower Hamlets the Tower Was the Seat of Royal
    The Fusilier Origins in Tower Hamlets The Tower was the seat of Royal power, in addition to being the Sovereign’s oldest palace, it was the holding prison for competitors and threats, and the custodian of the Sovereign’s monopoly of armed force until the consolidation of the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich in 1805. As such, the Tower Hamlets’ traditional provision of its citizens as a loyal garrison to the Tower was strategically significant, as its possession and protection influenced national history. Possession of the Tower conserved a foothold in the capital, even for a sovereign who had lost control of the City or Westminster. As such, the loyalty of the Constable and his garrison throughout the medieval, Tudor and Stuart eras was critical to a sovereign’s (and from 1642 to 1660, Parliament’s) power-base. The ancient Ossulstone Hundred of the County of Middlesex was that bordering the City to the north and east. With the expansion of the City in the later Medieval period, Ossulstone was divided into four divisions; the Tower Division, also known as Tower Hamlets. The Tower Hamlets were the military jurisdiction of the Constable of the Tower, separate from the lieutenancy powers of the remainder of Middlesex. Accordingly, the Tower Hamlets were sometimes referred to as a county-within-a-county. The Constable, with the ex- officio appointment of Lord Lieutenant of Tower Hamlets, held the right to call upon citizens of the Tower Hamlets to fulfil garrison guard duty at the Tower. Early references of the unique responsibility of the Tower Hamlets during the reign of Bloody Mary show that in 1554 the Privy Council ordered Sir Richard Southwell and Sir Arthur Darcye to muster the men of the Tower Hamlets "whiche owe their service to the Towre, and to give commaundement that they may be in aredynes for the defence of the same”1.

    Private Arthur Phillip FLUNDER Service Number: 16708 11th Battalion (Cambridge Pals) The Suffolk Regiment Died 1st July 1916 Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Pier and face 1C and 2A WW1 Centenary record of an Unknown Soldier Recruitment – 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment – Suffolks/Cambs – (Cambridge Pals) Private Arthur FLUNDER was a member of the 11th Suffolks, which was a service battalion known as the Cambs/Suffolks or Cambridge Pals. At the outbreak of the war, men of the County enlisting for Infantry were sent to the Suffolk Regiment Depot at Bury St Edmunds. This soon became overcrowded and a relief camp was formed in Cambridge. Battle of the Somme The plan was for the British forces to attack on a fourteen-mile front after an intense week-long artillery bombardment of the German positions. Over 1.6 million shells were fired, 70 for every one metre of front, the idea being to decimate the German Front Line. Two minutes before zero-hour, 19 mines were exploded under the German lines. Whistles sounded and the troops went over the top at 7.30am. They advanced in lines at a slow, steady pace across No Man's Land towards then German front line. His parents, Thomas Cartwright and Mary Ann Porter, were married on 5 November 1860 at the parish church in Child’s Ercall. Thomas was a labourer living in Peplow and Mary Ann was a servant from Child’s Ercall. As the years passed the family stayed in the area, and in 1881 they were living at Peplow Cottages in Hodnet. Thomas was still an agricultural labourer, and five of the children were at home. James was born at 12.30am on 5 June 1881; the time is noted on his birth certificate because he was twin brother to Alice. In 1891 Thomas, Mary and seven of the children were still living in Hodnet, at Isle of Want. By 1901 James had left home, and was working as a cowman, living at Eaton Villa, Eaton upon Tern. It was probably here that he met Fanny Buttery, a general servant at the same address, and on 26 December 1906 the young couple married at St Michael and All Angels Church, Child’s Ercall. When the 1911 census was taken, James was living with his parents-in-law at No. 12, Eaton on Tern. He was working as a wagoner on a farm, and Fanny was visiting her sister Elizabeth Dorsett at Hoar Cross, Burton on Trent.
