  • Erik Guay Becomes Oldest World Champion in Alpine Skiing History
Erik Guay becomes oldest world champion in Alpine skiing history Associated PressFeb 8, 2017, 7:38 AM EST ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) — Erik Guay led the veteran Canadians over the favored Norwegians in the super-G on Wednesday and became the oldest gold medalist at the world ski championships. The 35-year-old Guay beat Olympic super-G champion Kjetil Jansrud by 0.45 seconds – his first victory in almost three years. Guay triumphed less than two weeks after a spectacular crash, when he flew 60 meters (yards) in the air off a jump in a treacherous World Cup downhill. “It’s incredible. I’m as happy as can be,” said Guay, putting his win down to “forgetting about everything and having a fun race.” It was a banner day for Canada after Norway seemed sure to also take bronze in an event it dominates. But late-starting Manny Osborne-Paradis edged World Cup champion Aleksander Aamodt Kilde off the podium. On his 33rd birthday, Osborne-Paradis claimed his first career championship medal, trailing Guay by 0.51. He was serenaded by a finish-area crowd, and later was hugged by his mother. Guay added super-G gold to his downhill title from the 2011 worlds in Garmisch- Partenkirchen. It was at the same German course last month that he wiped out in a twisting fall. “I was lucky to walk away with fairly minor injuries,” said Guay, competing at his seventh worlds. “I can see (the crash) on TV no problem, but in my head I can’t really remember going off the jump and having that fear.” There were more jumps to handle Wednesday on a hill that launched racers airborne, testing their balance and ability to improvise through an unfamiliar gate-setting.

  • Dominik Paris Is the King of Stelvio – First Place After “Attacking Vikings” Svindal and Jansrud
Bormio, Dicember 17, 2017 DOMINIK PARIS IS THE KING OF STELVIO – FIRST PLACE AFTER “ATTACKING VIKINGS” SVINDAL AND JANSRUD It’s a memorable day for the “Azzurri” world. It’s a come back to victory forDominik Paris and it’s a come back that closes the seasonal lack of victories forthe Italian guys, 13 races that were becoing a heavy one. What a wonderful racethe one by the guy from Santa Valpurga, in Val d'Ultimo, which shows a great growth in condition, just almost a month from the Winter Olympics inPyeongChang. Paris already won in Bormio on December 29, 2012 together with the Austrian Hannes Reichelt, but this time the taste of victory is even more intense. Power, class, courage. They’re all components of the race by the “Azzurro”. A dive of about 3250 m. and a vertical drop of 1010 m. that left without breath. He was aggressive from the start to Praimont, amazing on the curves of Fontana Lunga and Pian dell'Orso, high line in the Carcentina passage. Paris lost balanceonly in the San Pietro long jump, but kept position with an acrobatic gesture thatprevented him from falling and losing speed before the final curves which arealways decisive. From La Konta the “Azzurro” built its triumph, and believed ituntil the last meter. He didn’t win for the mistakes of the others. The Norwegians Aksel Svindal and Kjetil Jansrud skied in an excellent way and hunted him (+0,04 for the first, +0,17for the second, but it’s nothing on a long and complex slope like Stelvio).

  • First Dh Training in Bormio Is in the Sign of “The Azzurri”
BORMIO - December 26, 2017 FIRST DH TRAINING IN BORMIO IS IN THE SIGN OF “THE AZZURRI” In spite of a visible slowdown at the finish line Peter Fill was the fastest during the first official training of the Bormio DH race scheduled on December 28. With 1'57 "06 he preceded the team mate Christof Innerhofer with 8/100 and the Austrian Matthias Mayer with 18/100. It’s a raking of great nobility with Hannes Reichelt 4th place (35/100), Dominik Paris 5th place (52/100), and Frenchman Adrien Theaux 6th place (71/100). All athletes, apart from the Austrian Mayer, trained last week in the upper part of the Stelvio and therefore have been able to enjoy greater confidence with some of the most technical parts on the track. The last winner of the Men’s World Cup on the Stelvio, the Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal, was 9th place (1 "56 from Fill). 18th place for the other Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud (2" 39). "It's always nice to be back here," says Svindal, "it’s among the most difficult slopes of the entire circuit. It’s well prepared and it will be a difficult and exciting one the day of the race". The protagonists love Stelvio. Reichelt says: "It's a good dive and it won’t be easy during the race. The snow is not frozen and that's why it seems even easier than in the past". Peter Fill has the same feeling: "In the last years it was always icy and the skis vibrated much more, but maybe I have become more powerful".
