Adult Sunday School Lesson Nassau Bay Baptist Church December 6, 2020 In this beginning of the Gospel According to Luke, we learn why Luke wrote this account and to whom it was written. Then we learn about the birth of John the Baptist and the experience of his parents, Zacharias and Elizabeth. Read Luke 1:1-4 Luke tells us that many have tried to write a narrative of Jesus’ redemptive life, called a gospel. Attached to these notes is a list of gospels written.1 The dates of these gospels span from ancient to modern, and this list only includes those about which we know or which have survived the millennia. Canon The Canon of Scripture is the list of books that have been received as the text that was inspired by the Holy Spirit and given to the church by God. The New Testament canon was not “closed” officially until about A.D. 400, but the churches already long had focused on books that are now included in our New Testament. Time has proven the value of the Canon. Only four gospels made it into the New Testament Canon, but as Luke tells us, many others were written. Twenty-seven books total were “canonized” and became “canonical” in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, thirty-nine books are included as canonical. Canonical Standards Generally, three standards were held up for inclusion in the Canon. • Apostolicity—Written by an Apostle or very close associate to an Apostle. Luke was a close associate of Paul. • Orthodoxy—Does not contradict previously revealed Scripture, such as the Old Testament. -

It has been affirmed by Pope Innocent III (DS 423), The IV Lateran Council (DS 430), Pope Boniface VIII (DS 468), The Council of Florence (DS 714), Pope Pius IX (DS 1647), Pope Clement VI (DS 5706), The Council of Trent (DS 861) etc. We shall list some of the Popes and Saints of the Church and what they taught on this Catholic Dogma. Pope St. Clement I, A. D. 88-97: “Heretical teachers pervert Scripture and try to get into heaven with a false key, for they have formed their human assemblies later than the Catholic Church. From this previously- existing and most true Church, it is very clear that these later heresies, and this which have come into being since then, are counterfeit and novel inventions.” (Epistle to the Corinthians) St. Ignatius of Antioch: “Do not deceive yourselves, he who adheres to the author of a schism will not possess the kingdom of God.” [Epistle to the Philadelphians, 3 (CH 158)]. The Idea of Medieval Heresy in Early Modern France Bethany Hume PhD University of York History September 2019 2 Abstract This thesis responds to the historiographical focus on the trope of the Albigensians and Waldensians within sixteenth-century confessional polemic. It supports a shift away from the consideration of medieval heresy in early modern historical writing merely as literary topoi of the French Wars of Religion. Instead, it argues for a more detailed examination of the medieval heretical and inquisitorial sources used within seventeenth-century French intellectual culture and religious polemic. It does this by examining the context of the Doat Commission (1663-1670), which transcribed a collection of inquisition registers from Languedoc, 1235-44. Jean de Doat (c.1600-1683), President of the Chambre des Comptes of the parlement of Pau from 1646, was charged by royal commission to the south of France to copy documents of interest to the Crown. This thesis aims to explore the Doat Commission within the wider context of ideas on medieval heresy in seventeenth-century France. The periodization “medieval” is extremely broad and incorporates many forms of heresy throughout Europe. As such, the scope of this thesis surveys how thirteenth-century heretics, namely the Albigensians and Waldensians, were portrayed in historical narrative in the 1600s. The field of study that this thesis hopes to contribute to includes the growth of historical interest in medieval heresy and its repression, and the search for original sources by seventeenth-century savants. By exploring the ideas of medieval heresy espoused by different intellectual networks it becomes clear that early modern European thought on medieval heresy informed antiquarianism, historical writing, and ideas of justice and persecution, as well as shaping confessional identity. -

August 7, 2017 The Teaching of Anti-Catholicism in Schools Introduction I am a retired Primary and Secondary school teacher. For the past eleven years I have been particularly concerned that the teaching of Medieval History in Year 8 is biased against Catholicism. Overall, political correctness, substandard historical writing, fabrications and serious omissions distort the school textbooks I have examined. Evidently the authors of these textbooks have an agenda that supersedes historical facts; all their students are misinformed while Catholic children are subjected to a barrage of criticism of their spiritual ancestors and their beliefs. I know of Catholic children who have been shocked and seriously embarrassed about the supposed misdeeds of medieval Catholics. These students have been subjected to a form of victimisation; hopefully they will have the opportunity to re-read what they were taught in school then find a degree of comfort in the comments. Overall Catholic children should be proud of their spiritual ancestors. It must be noted that my complaints to the Department of Education and Training Victoria have been dismissed; past Victorian governments appear to be unconcerned about the teaching of authentic medieval history and the victimisation of the Catholic children in their care. Catholic children in Government schools do not have – in the words of the State of Victoria’s Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 – “the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion and belief” or the right “not be coerced or restrained in a way that limits his or her freedom to have or adopt a religion or belief in worship, observance, practice or teaching” or “the right to hold an opinion without interference”. -

The “Popes in history” edition in this range is a unique work in the world. It proves our potential to offer a work eliminating borders through its mission. Literally and metaphorically, too. The fabulous processing of noble metals and miniatures produced with the smallest details possible will for sure attract the interest of antiquarians but also of those interested in this topic. Although this is a limited edition I am convinced that it will be provided to everybody who wants to commemorate significant part of the historical continuity and Christian civilization. I am pleased to have become part of this unique project, and I believe that whether the medals or this lovely book will present a good message on us in the world and on the world in us. Show More. Disappointed by the renaissance Popes, I thought the era of the enlightenment would be better — nope. It was all just too jumbled for me. I've always been interested in religious history, probably comes from growing up in the Philippines. Some are more myths, rumors, and stories than historical fact, esp. And that is the book, pretty much: Names, dates, wars, and the judgments of an elderly British aristocrat. Welcome back. The worst problems of the book are in the first and the last one hundred pages. Reading two thousand years of history with this enormous cast of characters is hard work. The rest, unfortunately, is just history. Surprisingly, I enjoy this book quite a bit. And here, surely, is the crux of the matter. What I liked least was finding out that if the Pope was a good guy, he would probably be killed fairly soon. Davis, Denison University. Occasionally, a person’s future seems almost predetermined by the name he is given at birth. In the mid- tenth century, when the young Abbo took the monastic habit, becoming a monk at Fleury, Abbot Wufald pointed out how close the name Abbo was to the root of “abbas,” the Latin word for abbot. At the time, Wufald could not have known that Abbo, then just a boy, would eventually become abbot of Fleury and be considered “first among abbots.” A Merovingian foundation, Fleury was located on the Loire River, just east of Orléans. A wealthy and learned monastery reformed by Cluny in 930 but independent of it, Fleury played a central role in shaping the relationship between the monarchy and the monastic movement in West Francia. The Carolingians were important patrons of Fleury, as were Hugh Capet and his Robertian ancestors, making Fleury a crucial lynchpin in the transition from Carolingian to Capetian rule. Fleury also played a significant role in papal politics. Pope Gregory V called Fleury “the first monastery in Gaul.” Some of Fleury’s prestige was based on its claim to possess the relics of Saint Benedict. But during the late tenth century, Abbo’s sixteen year abbacy also did much to enhance the political and religious status of Fleury. -

The effect of prevailing thought on Gerbert's innovations is also described. The first section examines the historical context and provides biographical information on Gerbert. Gerbert's pedagogy is described in the second section, including the planar abacus, celestial spheres, the celestial teaching machine, and the monochord. The influence of Gerbert is addressed in the third section, including the failure of his instructional devices and innovations to gain widespread use after his death. Rediscovery of his work by a subsequent pope, Alexander III, is discussed in the fourth section. Possible parallels in the 20th century are considered in the final section, including the use of mechanical teaching machines and programmed instruction in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as recent initiatives for the use of computers, the Internet, and other electronic devices.
