Anton Arensky (1861-1906) Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Opus 32 Allegro moderato Scherzo Elegia Finale Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Piano Trio in B-flat major, Opus 97, “Archduke” Allegro moderato Scherzo: Allegro Andante cantabile ma pero con moto; Poco più adagio Allegro moderato; Presto ABOUT THE ARTISTS A native of Milan, violinist ROBERTO CANI studied at the Milan Conservatory of Music, the Gnessin Institute of Music in Moscow and the University of Southern California. He has been guest concertmaster for the London Philharmonic and the La Scala Philharmonic. He has performed as a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic, the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan, RAI Symphony (Italy), Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano, Orchestra Cantelli, Belgrade Orchestra, Zagreb Orchestra, and Missouri Chamber Orchestra. Appointed Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra in 2011, Cani works closely with such artists as Plácido Domingo, James Conlon, and Gustavo Dudamel, among others. Actively involved in chamber music, he has had the pleasure of touring with conductor and pianist Justus Frantz. He has also performed alongside Lynn Harrell, Jeffrey Swann, and Jason Vieaux. ROBERT deMAINE is an American virtuoso cellist who has been hailed by The New York Times as “an artist who makes one hang on every note.” He has distinguished himself as one of the finest and most versatile instrumentalists of his generation, performing to critical acclaim as soloist, recitalist, orchestra principal, recording artist, chamber musician, and composer / arranger. In 2010, deMaine was a founding member of the highly acclaimed Ehnes String Quartet and completed several world tours and recordings with the ensemble. In 2012 he was invited to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Principal Cello. He collaborates often in a piano trio with violinist Hilary Hahn and pianist Natalie Zhu. As soloist, he has collaborated with many distinguished conductors, including Neeme Järvi, Peter Oundjian, Joseph Silverstein, and Leonard Slatkin, and has performed nearly all the major cello concertos with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, where he served as Principal. Described as “adventurous and passionate” (The New Yorker) and “a concert pianist of the highest order” (Chicago WTTW), Ukrainian-born pianist and Sundays Live veteran INNA FALIKS has established herself as one of the most exciting, committed, communicative, and poetic artists of her generation. Faliks is Professor of Piano at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, where she also is Head of Piano. She has performed on many of the world’s great stages, with numerous orchestras, in solo appearances, and with conductors such as Leonard Slatkin and Keith Lockhart. Her previous, critically acclaimed CD on MSR Classics, Sound of Verse, was released in 2009, featuring music of Boris Pasternak, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel. Her discography also includes a recital recording for the Yamaha Disklavier library. Recording projects in the works include a Chopin solo and cello sonatas recording with cellist Wendy Warner, and a disc of commissioned piano works for her poetry-music series, Music/Words, with music of Clarice Assad, Ljova Zhurbin, and other young composers, and Re-Imagining Ravel – responses to Gaspard de la Nuit. Klein International String Competition June 5 - 6, 2020, San Francisco California (San Francisco CA) Applications open November 1, 2020 for The Irving M. Klein International String Competition, produced by the California Music Center at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, dependent upon the status of local COVID-19 restrictions on public gathering in San Francisco. In 2020, in response to conditions imposed by the global pandemic, the Klein became #KleinOnline2020, and pivoted to an entirely virtual Competition seen by a worldwide audience of over 5,000. CMC will conduct and present the Klein in whatever form it may take in 2021. Violinists, violists, cellists and bassists ages 15 to 23 of any nationality not currently under professional management are eligible to compete June 5 - 6, 2021 in San Francisco or online. For 36 years, the Klein has attracted some of the world's finest young string players to San Francisco each June to compete for cash and performance prizes. The Klein Competition has achieved international recognition as one of the most prestigious classical music competitions, recognized for the high caliber of the contestants; its unique, nurturing environment; and its commitment to the commissioning of new works: the Commissioned Works for the 2021 Klein Competition will be composed by Sakari Dixon Vanderveer. Rushing in from the cold is not a good idea. Please plan your trip and check the internet for any freeway or road closures. You can wait outside the doors to the judging room, but once your time block starts, you should be inside the room. There are no door monitors to find you or call you in. You may also choose to be outside if you don’t enjoy hearing others or if you need a little personal space, but please keep track of the order of the performers so that you do not miss your turn.
