Artist Facts • Pronounced (rehn-WAR) • Born February 25, 1841 in Limoges, France • Died December 3, 1919, France (age 78) • Renoir grew up in Paris, France. • Renoir began studying art in Paris, France. • Grew up in a working class family and as a boy worked in a porcelain factory where his drawing talents led him to paint designs on fine china. • He married Aline Victorine Charigot, who modeled in his painting Luncheon of the Boating Party. • Renoir painted approximately 6,000 paintings and painted for nearly 60 years of his life. • Renoir continued painting late in his life even though he had severe athritis and had to have an assistant place a paintbrush in his hand. • Two of Renoir’s paintings have sold for more than 70 million dollars each! • One of Renoir’s sons was an actor and another was a filmmaker. -

FIRST COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF RENOIR’S FULL-LENGTH CANVASES BRINGS TOGETHER ICONIC WORKS FROM EUROPE AND THE U.S. FOR AN EXCLUSIVE NEW YORK CITY EXHIBITION RENOIR, IMPRESSIONISM, AND FULL-LENGTH PAINTING February 7 through May 13, 2012 This winter and spring The Frick Collection presents an exhibition of nine iconic Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, offering the first comprehensive study of the artist’s engagement with the full-length format. Its use was associated with the official Paris Salon from the mid-1870s to mid- 1880s, the decade that saw the emergence of a fully fledged Impressionist aesthetic. The project was inspired by Renoir’s La Promenade of 1875–76, the most significant Impressionist work in the Frick’s permanent collection. Intended for public display, the vertical grand-scale canvases in the exhibition are among the artist’s most daring and ambitious presentations of contemporary subjects and are today considered masterpieces of Impressionism. The show and accompanying catalogue draw on contemporary criticism, literature, and archival documents to explore the motivation behind Renoir’s full-length figure paintings as well as their reception by critics, peers, and the public. Recently-undertaken technical studies of the canvases will also shed new light on the artist’s working methods. SPRING 2012 Volume 19, No. 1 Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art Newsletter LES GRANDES VERTICALES: RENOIR AT THE FRICK COLLECTION By Caterina Y. Pierre This spring, visitors to the Frick Collection have the opportu- nity to view a small but splendid exhibition entitled “Renoir, Impressionism, and Full-Length Painting,” organized by Colin B. Bailey, the Frick’s Deputy Director and the Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. The exhibition, which runs through May 13, 2012, is accompanied by a sumptuous catalogue authored by Bailey and co-published by the Frick and Yale University Press (ISBN 978-0-300-18108-1, US $60.00). The exhibition takes an in-depth look at nine of Renoir’s large- scale, mostly vertical, canvases created over the nine-year pe- riod between 1874 and 1883. The catalogue includes a tenth painting, Jeanne Samary, a full-length portrait that was un- available for the exhibition. The inspiration for the exhibition seems to have stemmed from a recent reevaluation of the Frick’s own vertical for- mat canvas by Renoir, La Promenade (1875-76), acquired by Henry Clay Frick for $35,000 in 1914 from Knoedler and Company. Recent infrared reflectography studies completed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art have revealed two addi- tional figures at the top left of La Promenade, suggesting that the principle large female figure in the center of the painting, usually referred to as the “mother” figure, might now be seen as an older sister to the two foreground children. Similar re- search, particularly of the technological kind, was offered for many of the paintings on view through the catalogue and a small media room outside of the exhibition. -

THE PARADOX OF THEODORE PARKER: TRANSCENDENTALIST, ABOLITIONIST, AND WHITE SUPREMACIST. by JIM KELLEY Under the Direction of David Sehat, Phd ABSTRACT Theodore Parker was one of the leading intellectuals and militant abolitionists of the antebellum era who has been largely overlooked by modern scholars. He was a leading Transcendentalist intellectual and was also one of the most militant leaders of the abolitionist movement. Despite his fervent abolitionism, his writings reveal an attitude that today we would call racist or white supremacist. Some scholars have argued that Parker's motivation for abolishing slavery was to redeem the Anglo-Saxon race from the sin of slavery. I will dispute this claim and explore Parker's true understanding of race. How he could both believe in the supremacy of the white race, and at the same time, militantly oppose African slavery. Parker was influenced by the racial "science" of his era which supported the superiority of the Caucasian race. -

Boston Museum of Fine Arts Trip Set for Wednesday June 20
Boston Museum of Fine Arts trip set for Wednesday June 20 We have had a tremendous response to our first excursion trip last September. Requests for another trip have encouraged us to plan another--this time to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. “Dance at Bougival” by Pierre Auguste Renoir! This lively painting with springtime colors—the young girl in chapeau rouge and the bearded man in chapeau jaune--make you feel like dancing. Joining this iconic Renoir, are two monumental paintings on loan from the Musée d'Orsay, Paris—full length canvasses of Renoir's “Dance in the City” and “Dance in the Country.” The artist’s colorful Impressionist style captures the fashion and pastimes of his contemporaries. This trio of paintings in Gallery 225 will be together for the first time in a generation and just in time for our arrival. The showpiece of the MFA is its brand new Art of the Americas Wing. The architecture alone is worth a visit. It doubles the number of objects from the collection on view, including several large-scale masterpieces not displayed for decades. The new wing takes a global perspective on Art of the Americas, showcasing more than 5,000 works of art produced in North, Central, and South America over the course of three millennia. The wing's four levels has 53 brand-new galleries including nine beautiful period rooms and four Behind the Scenes galleries to enhance the way visitors experience and interact with the collection. 1 Montage of justices taking oath John: This is Bound by Oath, a new podcast series from the Institute for Justice’s Center for Judicial Engagement. I’m John Ross. I host our other podcast, Short Circuit, where we do brief, off-the-cuff analysis of federal appeals court decisions as they come down. We’re going to try something a little different here. We’re going to really dig into the history and meaning of one piece of the Constitution, the Fourteenth Amendment, which was ratified 150 years ago this year at the close of the Civil War. Kurt Lash: The story of the Fourteenth Amendment is one of the most dramatic stories in American constitutional history. The amendment was born of political desperation. It almost caused a second Civil War and it was only passed after the impeachment of an American president. John: That was Kurt Lash, a professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, one of the preeminent scholars of how the Constitution changed in the years after the Civil War. And now here’s Aderson Francois of Georgetown Law, who’s an expert on the history of slavery and reconstruction: Aderson Francois: In many ways the 14th Amendment at least in my view was the first time we truly attempted to write into the Constitution the fundamental principles that we 2 claim to abide by in the Declaration of Independence the idea that all men are born in created equal and invested with certain inalienable rights. Doctoral Dissertations. 1456. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/1456 Trailing Freedom: Embodied Resistance, Geopolitics, and a Black Sense of Freedom Vanessa Lynn Lovelace, PhD University of Connecticut, [2017] This project challenges the conventional construction of the academic and real-life search for freedom by exploring how Blackness changes the dynamics of who is a liberated and free subject. In order to do so, this project engages with three specific iterations of freedom: freedom as liberty, freedom as emancipation and freedom as revolution. By focusing on “Freedom Trails”- namely, the Boston Freedom Trail, the geography of the Nat Turner slave rebellion, and the embodied geography of Black Power – this project maps the spaces that enhance a Black sense of freedom. These particular cases conceive of freedom in both conventional and revolutionary ways. Conventional freedom gets marked in the terrain, while Black Revolutionary Freedom is covered and silenced. This project grapples with what it is people who inherit and own Blackness have to do in order to be free? I employ an assemblage of methodologies, which creates an expanded archive through memory work, haunting, deconstruction and textual interdiction. This project is just as much about trailing freedom as it is about the method of Freedom Trails. -
