lost humans, both alive and presumed dead on land or water. When his SAR vest is on, he is all about his JOB and locating the missing person.

Maxwell’s work ethic is outstanding and will not quit unless told to do so by his handler. Maxwell has helped bring both happiness and closure to the missing person’s families. Certainly Maxwell is deserving to represent SAR Dogs as a AHA Hero Dog. Handler: Len Troman

Maxwell is a 10 year old Australian Shepherd NASAR Certified in Area Search. Maxwell and his handler have been trained through the years by many well recognized USA Air Scent Area trainers as well as the United States Border Patrol. Ingrid Lyne was last seen Friday night before going on a date with a man she met online. They were going to the Seattle Mariners home opener.

The human remains found in a recycling bin over the weekend were tentatively identified as those of the missing mother of three who vanished Friday night. Seattle police say three adult body parts — including a foot — were found in a homeowner’s recycling bin in Seattle’s Central District.

Investigators later identified the remains as being those of Lyne. In cooperation with the Renton, WA, Police Department, a search warrant was served in their jurisdiction and evidence was recovered, including telephone calls, that helped police identify a suspect. Arkansas Vynn Stuart and K-9 West "The purse, the telephone and everything was in Land HRD [her] house," Lyne's neighbor Edward Franceschina told Q13 Fox. Franceschina told the Seattle Times that detectives had converged on the quiet middle-class neighborhood about 11 miles southeast of downtown with a mobile crime lab early Sunday morning.

Police said, based on that evidence, a 37-year- old Snohomish County man, John Robert Charlton, was arrested in connection with Lyne’s murder and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of homicide.

Investigators determined the remains, which were packaged in plastic bags, had been placed in the bin late Friday or early Saturday. A police spokesman said the bin would have been empty because recyclables were collected on the block on Fridays. http://www.foxnews.com/; FOX 5

KIBBLES & BITS by Susan Bulanda

This month we will look at the Boxer, a dog that is not usually thought of for SAR work in the United States.

Although the German people of Munich decided to create a specific breed of dog called the Boxer around 1890, a Boxer like dog has existed since the Middle Ages. These dogs were kept in the house and were great with the family as well as protective when needed.

By WWII, the Boxers were popular in Europe and the United States and were used as military dogs primarily as patrol and guard dogs. They are sweet dogs despite their tendency to protect the family. If a stranger shows that there is no threat, the Boxer will accept them. With proper socialization they can make a safe, friendly SAR dog. They are typically good with children.

The Boxer has a short dense coat and can tolerate heat and cold, but not extreme heat or cold. They do not have an undercoat and the hair on their underside tends to be very sparse. Also they do not have hair in their ears which can be cropped or left long. If left long, they lay close to the head helping to keep the ears warm in cooler weather.

The Boxer needs variety in his training since he is a serious worker. Like most dogs, when in training, he needs time to think, rest and play. He has a very compact and strong body and is very agile. They can range from 21 – 25 inches at the shoulder. Like terriers, the Boxer has a bouncy gait that gives the feeling of lightness of step.

Although they have a short nose, they can do scent work. Perhaps not as good as some other breeds but good enough for SAR work. Because of their short noses they need frequent rests when working, especially in hot, humid weather. Plenty of cool water is a must for this breed.

Many Boxers are not good swimmers so if they are going to be around water they should wear a life vest for dogs. They are very muscular with little fat, which means they tend to sink.

NSDA SAR DOG NEWS April 2016 Page 20

As with most breeds, they need positive, reward based training. When teaching them to give an indication they do not prefer to use bringsels or other objects that they are required to carry. However they do enjoy a game of tug. Boxers got their name in part because they like to box things with their feet. An alert signal for this breed that would be natural would be to hit with their front foot or both feet.

As is true with other breeds, there is a difference between European and U.S. Boxers. http://www.worldwideboxer.com/style.html The Boxers that are from England in particular have longer noses. The length of the nose can vary from line to line and country to country. The longer nosed dogs seem to have an easier time breathing. Boxer medical issues are too long to list. They have about 46 - 50 physical defects.

Sheriff Jones said another deputy was able to swim into the river and get Vigor but they were unable to resuscitate him.
