Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses, the new species is nested within the Goniurosaurus yingdeensis species group. However, morphological analyses cannot ascribe it to any known species of that group. It is distinguished from the other three species in the group by a combination of the following characters: scales around midbody 121–128; dorsal tubercle rows at midbody 16–17; presence of 10–11 precloacal pores in males, and absent in females; nuchal loop and body bands immaculate, without black spots; iris orange, gradually darker on both sides. -

Eyelid geckos (Eublepharidae) are of particular interest, as they encompass species with both environmental and genotypic sex determination. We identified for the first time the X-specific gene content in the Yucatán banded gecko, Coleonyx elegans, possessing X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y multiple sex chromosomes by comparative genome coverage analysis between sexes. The X-specific gene content of Coleonyx elegans was revealed to be partially homologous to genomic regions linked to the chicken autosomes 1, 6 and 11. A qPCR-based test was applied to validate a subset of X-specific genes by comparing the difference in gene copy numbers between sexes, and to explore the homology of sex chromosomes across eleven eublepharid, two phyllodactylid and one sphaerodactylid species. Homologous sex chromosomes are shared between Coleonyx elegans and Coleonyx mitratus, two species diverged approximately 34 million years ago, but not with other tested species. As far as we know, the X-specific gene content of Coleonyx elegans / Coleonyx mitratus was never involved in the sex chromosomes of other gecko lineages, indicating that the sex chromosomes in this clade of eublepharid geckos evolved independently. -

Schulte) ABSTRACT Herpetofauna diversity and richness were compared in areas that varied in the degree of elephant impact on the woody vegetation ( Acacia spp.). The study was conducted at Ndarakwai Ranch in northeastern Tanzania. Elephants moving between three National Parks in Kenya and Tanzania visit this property. From August 2007 to March 2008, we erected drift fences and pitfall traps to sample herpetofaunal community and examined species richness and diversity within the damaged areas and in an exclusion plot. -

Chinese Cave Gecko Goniurosaurus hainanensis Care Sheet www.thetdi.com Average Size 7.5 - 8.5 inches long Average Lifespan 10+ years Diet Chinese Cave Geckos are strict insectivores. Offer a variety of live insects including crickets, mealworms, waxworms, and cockroach nymphs. Feeding Feed babies and adults daily, although some keepers will feed adults every other day. Dust food with calcium powder daily & a multivitamin once a week. Feed them the amount they will eat in 10 minutes. Worms can be left in the food bowl. Housing Habitat - Chinese Cave Geckos come from The Chinese Islands of Hainan and Cat Ba. The environment should be kept cool and humid. Provide hiding spots such as cork bark or commercially available hides to mimic the gecko’s natural environment. Chinese Cave Geckos may be kept alone or in pairs. If housed together geckos should be of similar size to avoid injury. Never house two males together in the same tank. Two females generally get along well. A male and female will likely breed if housed together. Size - An adult must have a minimum cage size of 20” Long x 10” Deep x 12” High, also known as a 10-gallon tank. A screen lid is recommended for safety. Substrate - Due to humidity requirements an absorbent substrate is desired. Peat moss or coconut fiber are preferred. Temperature - A Chinese Cave Gecko’s enclosure temperature should be between 65-75°F. Humidity - Mist their enclosures once to twice a day with a spray bottle. Substrate should be allowed to dry out some between mistings. -

File Ref: EP 86/25/01 (19) LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BRIEF Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Chapter 586) PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED SPECIES OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS ORDINANCE (AMENDMENT OF SCHEDULES 1 AND 3) ORDER 2021 INTRODUCTION On 5 February 2021, the Secretary for the Environment, pursuant to section 48 of the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Cap. 586) (the Ordinance), made the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Amendment of Schedules 1 and 3) Order 2021 (the Amendment Order), as set out at Annex A, to amend Schedules 1 and 3 to the Ordinance. 2. The purpose of the Amendment Order is to give effect to the amendments made at the 18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP18) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) held in 2019 in Switzerland. The Amendment Order also aims to give effect to changes made to the list of endangered species in Appendix III to CITES since the last amendments to the Ordinance in 2018. JUSTIFICATIONS 3. Hong Kong has been implementing CITES through local legislation1 since 1976. The Ordinance stipulates that a licence to be issued in advance by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) is required for the import, introduction from the sea, export, re-export or possession of specimens of a scheduled species, whether alive, dead, its parts or derivatives, unless otherwise provided.
