The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) * Turab-ul-Hassan Sargana **Khalil Ahmed ***Shahid Hassan Rizvi Abstract The main objective of the present study is to explain the role of the Deobandi faction of scholars in Indian Freedom Movement. In fact, there had been different schools of thought who supported the Movement and their works and achievements cannot be forgotten. Historically, Ulema played a key role in the politics of subcontinent and the contribution of Dar ul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir-ul- Uloom (Saharanpur), Madrassa Qasim-ul-Uloom( Muradabad), famous madaris of Deobandi faction is a settled fact. Their role became both effective and emphatic with the passage of time when they sided with the All India Muslim League. Their role and services in this historic episode is the focus of the study in hand. Keywords: Deoband, Aligarh Movement, Khilafat, Muslim League, Congress Ulama in Politics: Retrospect: Besides performing their religious obligations, the religious ulema also took part in the War of Freedom 1857, similar to the other Indians, and it was only due to their active participation that the movement became in line and determined. These ulema used the pen and sword to fight against the British and it is also a fact that ordinary causes of 1857 War were blazed by these ulema. Mian Muhammad Shafi writes: Who says that the fire lit by Sayyid Ahmad was extinguished or it had cooled down? These were the people who encouraged Muslims and the Hindus to fight against the British in 1857. -

HAPPY HOME SCHOOL SYSTEM MRS. MARYAM FARUQI Tribute to a Pioneer in Education Mrs. Maryam Faruqi is a well-known name in the educational circles of Pakistan. She is the founder of the Happy Home School System. FAMILY HISTORY: Her success can be attributed to her passion for education and the restless desire to utilize her potential for the service of humanity. She was born in India to Sir Ebrahim and Lady Hawabai Ebrahim Haroon Jaffer. Her father tried to create an educational awakening amongst the Muslims and laid the foundation of the Bombay Provincial Muslim Educational Conference which was affiliated to the All India Mohammedan Educational Conference of Aligarh. He also set up a school in Pune which is to date offering excellent education to Muslim girls. EARLY EDUCATION: Her education started from the Islamia School, Pune, which is now a full-fledged school named after her parents. When she topped in grade- 6, she was asked by the Headmistress to teach Urdu to class-V. She felt on top of the world when at the end of the period the Headmistress remarked, “I bet you will be a good Headmistress.” That was her first success. She gave her Matriculation Examination through the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Pune and acquired First Merit Position. Her name remains etched on the Honour Roll Board. She joined the prestigious Naurosji Wadia College and her outstanding intermediate results earned her the Moosa Qasim Gold Medal. In 1945, she graduated from Bombay University with distinction & was awarded a Gold Medal in B.A Honours. -

In fact, support to Britain in its war efforts rested on the assurance by the former that India would be freed from British subjection after the war. Imperial strategy as it was shaped in Britain was still stiff and rigid. Winston Churchill who succeeded Neville Chamberlain as the Prime Minister of Britain on 10 May 1940, declared that the aim of the war was, “victory, victory at all costs… for without victory, there is no survival… no survival for the British Empire…”. (Madhushree Mukerjee, 2010, p.3.) More than ever before, the mainstream political parties of India had to make their moves on the basis of both national politics and international developments. It is in this context that the Quit India Movement of 1942 heralded one of the most tumultuous phases in the history of the Indian national movement. The developments leading up to it were also momentous because of their long term ramification. In the course of this Unit, we will establish the pulls and pressures working on mainstream Indian politics and their regional manifestations prior to the beginning of the Quit India Movement of 1942. -

Two Nation Theory: Its Importance and Perspectives by Muslims Leaders Nation The word “NATION” is derived from Latin route “NATUS” of “NATIO” which means “Birth” of “Born”. Therefore, Nation implies homogeneous population of the people who are organized and blood-related. Today the word NATION is used in a wider sense. A Nation is a body of people who see part at least of their identity in terms of a single communal identity with some considerable historical continuity of union, with major elements of common culture, and with a sense of geographical location at least for a good part of those who make up the nation. We can define nation as a people who have some common attributes of race, language, religion or culture and united and organized by the state and by common sentiments and aspiration. A nation becomes so only when it has a spirit or feeling of nationality. A nation is a culturally homogeneous social group, and a politically free unit of the people, fully conscious of its psychic life and expression in a tenacious way. Nationality Mazzini said: “Every people has its special mission and that mission constitutes its nationality”. Nation and Nationality differ in their meaning although they were used interchangeably. A nation is a people having a sense of oneness among them and who are politically independent. In the case of nationality it implies a psychological feeling of unity among a people, but also sense of oneness among them. The sense of unity might be an account, of the people having common history and culture. -

My name is Shanzae Khan and I will be your Director for ‘Ending the Raj.’ As this is a crisis committee, we have a highly skilled crisis team working with us. The Crisis Manager for this committee is Jennifer Ben, our Moderator is Roaa Shoukry and the Crisis Analysts are Laura Quon, Maya Li Preti, Akil Abrar and Aniket Ka. We have been working very hard over the past few months to bring you this committee and will be present during the conference to answer any queries you may have. I have been involved with Model United Nations (MUNs) for over nine years and this is one of the most interesting committees that I have been given the opportunity to be a part of. I have participated as a Delegate, Vice-Chair, Co-Director, Director and have recently endeavored towards the logistical aspect of MUNs by serving as Director General for Internal Affairs at a recent conference. Diplomacy and debates are one of the most interesting aspects within this committee, and I hope to help you all with any and all aspects of debate you encounter during the course of this conference. Due to the competitive nature of UTMUN, I would strongly advise you all to read this background guide, submit your position papers on time, and conduct the relevant research required for your character. Al-Khair University, Bhimber Jinnah and Cabinet Mission Plan 1946 WALEED AKRAM [email protected] The Cabinet Mission Plan Background As the provincial election campaigns heated up, reports of Hindu Muslim riots, and of “poisonous propaganda” especially in Punjab, increased. The failure of the Simla conference had created a dangerous stalemate in Indian politics. It might be said that the body politic in India almost died of a surfeit of conferences. Moreover, Pethick Lawrence had concluded by then that it would be useless to leave the another round of political negotiations to the viceroy alone, and 2 nothing less than a Cabinet Mission to India was required to break the Hindu Muslim “deadlock”.1 Mr. Attlee made it clear that the Cabinet Mission would not take any definite proposals with them as had sir Stafford Cripps in 1942 nor would have any share in the constitution making. ‘India herself must choose’. He made a remark which was most significant from the point of view of the Muslims. He observed, ‘we are very mindful of the rights of minorities and minorities should be able to live free from fear. This remark welcome to the Congress leader while Muhammad Ali Jinnah replied ‘Muslims are not a minority in India they are a nation and self determination is their birthright’. The British Ministers examined the Muslim demand for Pakistan and came to the conclusion that neither a larger nor a smaller sovereign state of Pakistan would provide an acceptable solution for the communal problem. They referred to what they termed as ‘weighty administrative, economic and military consideration’ against the idea of partitioning of India and the setting up of two sovereign states. -

Remembering Partition: Violence, Nationalism and History in India Gyanendra Pandey CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Remembering Partition Violence, Nationalism and History in India Through an investigation of the violence that marked the partition of British India in 1947, this book analyses questions of history and mem- ory, the nationalisation of populations and their pasts, and the ways in which violent events are remembered (or forgotten) in order to en- sure the unity of the collective subject – community or nation. Stressing the continuous entanglement of ‘event’ and ‘interpretation’, the author emphasises both the enormity of the violence of 1947 and its shifting meanings and contours. The book provides a sustained critique of the procedures of history-writing and nationalist myth-making on the ques- tion of violence, and examines how local forms of sociality are consti- tuted and reconstituted by the experience and representation of violent events. It concludes with a comment on the different kinds of political community that may still be imagined even in the wake of Partition and events like it. GYANENDRA PANDEY is Professor of Anthropology and History at Johns Hopkins University. He was a founder member of the Subaltern Studies group and is the author of many publications including The Con- struction of Communalism in Colonial North India (1990) and, as editor, Hindus and Others: the Question of Identity in India Today (1993). Reflections on the Transfer of Power and Jawaharlal Nehru Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma KG PC GCB OM GCSI GCIE GCVO DSO FRS Trinity College, University of Cambridge - 14th November 1968. This is the second Nehru Memorial Lecture. At the suggestion of the former President of India the first was given, most appropriately, by the Master of Jawaharlal Nehru’s old College, Trinity. Lord Butler was born in India, the son of a most distinguished member of the Indian Civil Service, who was one of the most successful Governors. As Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for India he was one of those responsible for the truly remarkable 1935 Government of India Act, the Act which I used to speed up the transfer of power. Thus Lord Butler’ ties with India are strong and it not surprising that he gave such an excellent lecture, which has set such a high standard. He dealt faithfully with the life and career of Jawaharlal Nehru from his birth seventy-nine years ago this very day up to 1947. My fellow trustees of the Nehru Memorial Trust have persuaded me to deliver the second lecture. This seemed the occasion to give a connected narrative of the events leading up to the transfer of power in August 1947, and indeed to continue up to June 1948, when I ceased to be India’s first Constitutional Governor-General. It would have been nice to show how Nehru fitted into these events, but in the time available such a task soon proved to be out of the question, so I have deliberately confined myself to recalling the highlights of my Viceroyalty and to assessing Nehru’s relations to the principal men and events at the time, and to general reminiscences of him to illustrate the part he played up to the actual transfer of power. -

Combating Terrorism Center at West Point Occasional Paper Series Shiism and Sectarian Conflict in Pakistan Identity Politics, Iranian Influence, and Tit-for-Tat Violence Hassan Abbas September 22, 2010 1 2 Preface As the first decade of the 21st century nears its end, issues surrounding militancy among the Shi‛a community in the Shi‛a heartland and beyond continue to occupy scholars and policymakers. During the past year, Iran has continued its efforts to extend its influence abroad by strengthening strategic ties with key players in international affairs, including Brazil and Turkey. Iran also continues to defy the international community through its tenacious pursuit of a nuclear program. The Lebanese Shi‛a militant group Hizballah, meanwhile, persists in its efforts to expand its regional role while stockpiling ever more advanced weapons. Sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shi‛a has escalated in places like Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, and not least, Pakistan. As a hotbed of violent extremism, Pakistan, along with its Afghan neighbor, has lately received unprecedented amounts of attention among academics and policymakers alike. While the vast majority of contemporary analysis on Pakistan focuses on Sunni extremist groups such as the Pakistani Taliban or the Haqqani Network—arguably the main threat to domestic and regional security emanating from within Pakistan’s border—sectarian tensions in this country have attracted relatively little scholarship to date.
