EDY: Conditions of Acceptance: The United States Military, the Press, and the “Woman War Correspondent,” 1846-1945 (Under the direction of Jean Folkerts) This dissertation chronicles the history of American women who worked as war correspondents through the end of World War II, demonstrating the ways the military, the press, and women themselves constructed categories for war reporting that promoted and prevented women’s access to war: the “war correspondent,” who covered war-related news, and the “woman war correspondent,” who covered the woman’s angle of war. As the first study to examine these concepts, from their emergence in the press through their use in military directives, this dissertation relies upon a variety of sources to consider the roles and influences, not only of the women who worked as war correspondents but of the individuals and institutions surrounding their work. Nineteenth and early 20th century newspapers continually featured the woman war correspondent—often as the first or only of her kind, even as they wrote about more than sixty such women by 1914. -

From Vietnam to Iraq: Negative trends in television war reporting ABSTRACT In 1876, an American newspaperman with the US 7th Cavalry, Mark Kellogg, declared: ‘I go with Custer, and will be at the death.’1 This overtly heroic pronouncement embodies what many still want to believe is the greatest role in journalism: to go up to the fight, to be with ‘the boys’, to expose yourself to risk, to get the story and the blood-soaked images, to vividly describe a world of strength and weakness, of courage under fire, of victory and defeat—and, quite possibly, to die. So culturally embedded has this idea become that it raises hopes among thousands of journalism students worldwide that they too might become that holiest of entities in the media pantheon, the television war correspondent. They may find they have left it too late. Accompanied by evolutionary technologies and breathtaking media change, TV war reporting has shifted from an independent style of filmed reportage to live pieces-to-camera from reporters who have little or nothing to say. In this article, I explore how this has come about; offer some views about the resulting negative impact on practitioners and the public; and explain why, in my opinion, our ‘right to know’ about warfare has been seriously eroded as a result. Bernard, The Prince of the Netherlands, Interview with Cornelius Ryan for the book A Bridge Too Far The quotation above is just one of thousands of golden nuggets contained in the collection of research files of reporter, journalist and author Cornelius Ryan (1920– 1974). This native Irishman was one of the first writers on mili- tary subjects to go beyond using official records and the reminiscences of high- ranking commanders by contacting common soldiers and civilians in order to access their personal experiences of war. Along with his skill as a writer, the anecdotes they provided him with “humanized” his books, made them best sellers and turned two of them into films. And— to prove their longevity— The Longest Day (1959), The Last Battle (1966) and A Bridge Too Far (1974) are still in print while the films are still shown several times a year on American television. The Ryan Collection, housed at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, is the most heavily used collection at the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections. Queries come in from students and faculty on campus, from researchers throughout the U.S. as well as from overseas, especially Europe. They range from relatives and descendants to casual and amateur histo- rians to professional academicians. They ask for just a few pages from a questionnaire to dozens of pages of documents or photographs. What they all seem to want are the stories that get at the pathos of war and conflict. -

37 The Afro-American’s World War II Correspondents: Feuilletonism as Social Action Antero Pietila, Baltimore, Maryland, United States Stacy Spaulding, Towson University, United States This study examines the World War II correspondence published by the Baltimore Afro-American, concentrating principally on Ollie Stewart. We argue these wartime dispatches constitute a style of social action and narrative journalism best understood through the lens of feuilletonism. These works featured the correspondent as the reader’s “tour guide” of the war, wandering about and reporting what he saw and heard from black troops of their wartime experiences. Within the context of the Double V campaign, this body of work provided evidence for the Afro’s argument that blacks were loyal and heroic citizens who deserved equal rights in the postwar world. Published alongside provocatively worded articles on racial and civil unrest in the United States, these works provided an undemanding style of reading that depicted soldiers as fulfilling—and exceeding—the expectations of a country dependent on their support to win the war. y 1945, when the Afro-American published a book-length compilation Bof its World War II reporting, the Baltimore newspaper had sent seven black correspondents overseas to cover the experiences of black soldiers. The first of these was Ollie Stewart, who covered Rommel’s retreat from North Af- rica in 1942 and the invasions of Sicily and Normandy in 1944. Stewart and the six other correspondents sponsored by the Afro-American are evidence of the growth of the paper’s circulation, profitability, and influence during the 1930s and 1940s—unprecedented growth, given that the Afro sent no Literary Journalism Studies Vol. -

White Lecture on Press and Politics commemorates the life of the late reporter and historian who created the style and set the standard for contemporary political journalism and campaign coverage. White, who began his journalism career delivering the Boston Post, entered Har- vard College in 1932 on a newsboy’s schol- arship. He studied Chinese history and Oriental languages. In 1939, he witnessed the bombing of Chungking while freelance reporting on a Sheldon Fellow- ship, and later explained, “Three thousand human beings died; once I’d seen that I knew I wasn’t going home to be a professor.” During the war, White covered East Asia for Time and returned to write Thunder Out of China, a controversial critique of the American-supported Nationalist Chinese government. -

Abstract To consider the relationship between war and the media is to look at the way in which the media are involved in conflict, either as targets (war on the media) or as an auxiliary (war thanks to the media). On the basis of this distinction, four major developments may be cited that today combine to make war above all a media spectacle: photography, which opened the door to manipulation through stage-management; live technologies, which raise the question of journalists’ critical distance vis-à-vis the material they broadcast and which can facilitate the process of using them; pressure on the media and media globalization, which have led to a change in the way the political and military authorities go about making propaganda; and, finally, the fact that censorship has increasingly come into disrepute, which has prompted the authorities to think of novel ways of controlling journalists. : : : : : : : The military has long integrated into its operational planning the principles of the information society and of a world wrapped into a tight network of infor- mation media. Frost 2009 1 American Heritage Center Guide to Military History Resources Introduction The American Heritage Center (AHC) is the University of Wyoming’s (UW) repository for historical manuscripts, rare books, and university archives. Internationally known for its historical collections, the AHC first and foremost serves the students and citizens of Wyoming. The AHC sponsors a wide range of scholarly and popular programs including lectures, symposia, and exhibits. A place where both experts and novices engage with the original sources of history, access to the AHC is free and open to all. Collections at the AHC go beyond both the borders of Wyoming and the region, and support a wide range of research and teachings activities in the humanities, sciences, arts, business, and education. Major areas of collecting include Wyoming and the American West, the mining and petroleum industries, environment and natural resources, journalism, military history, transportation, the history of books, and 20th century entertainment such as popular music, radio, television, and film. The total archival holdings of the AHC are roughly 75,000 cubic feet (the equivalent of 18 miles) of material. The Toppan Rare Books Library holds more than 60,000 items from medieval illuminated manuscripts to the 21st century. Subject strengths include the American West, British and American literature, early exploration of North America, religion, hunting and fishing, natural history, women authors, and the book arts. -

They help widen a dangerous schism between the two worlds that seems unbridgeable. But where do these stereotypes come from? How much FIGHTING WORDS responsibility do media in each region have for promoting them? In late 2005, two dozen Arab and American journalists gathered in HOW ARAB AND AMERICAN JOURNALISTS CAN Wisconsin to talk about how they cover each other’s worlds, and how BREAK THROUGH TO BETTER COVERAGE they can do it better. Over three days, they discussed such topics as using loaded words like “terrorist” and “jihad,” showing provocative images, covering sensitive issues of religion, and handling pressure from governments and advertisers. This manual is an outgrowth of that conference. Written by an American and an Arab who participated in the discussions, it is designed to help International journalists in both worlds think about how they can help minimize the misunderstandings between cultures that perpetuate conflict.
