This year she raised over $1,000 for Charity: Water, a charity that builds wells in under- developed nations, providing clean water to whole villages. Brenna wrote an article about this charity for the Smithtown H.S. East paper and spoke at the Christ the King Senior Club. She also offered her babysitting clients 3 hours of babysitting for every $20 they do - nated. (For more info on Charity: Water see mychari - tywater.org/brennahyland). Brenna keeps on giving – on April 18, 2010, Brenna donated her hair for the third time to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organiza - tion that provides hairpieces to fi - nancially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Her (very proud) parents are Michele and Tom Hyland, sister Katie (age 12 attends Nesaquake) and brother Jack (age 10 attends St. Brenna, who had her hair cut at T. Carlton’s Spalon by James Elementary). Adriana (at no charge), is pictured holding her Locks of Love donation and showing off her new stylish hairdo.

BUDDING ARTISTS – Students in Mrs. Carlson’s full day Pre-K class at Sts. Philip & James School in St. James have been learning about the painting styles of the artists Van Gogh, Monet, Pollock, Michelangelo and Picasso. They had the opportunity to imitate the style of each artist while experimenting with various mediums. These budding artists had rave reviews at their debut art exhibit. The music which accompanied this special event was provided by the students of Mr. Christopher Beal’s classes.

Give Us This Day by David F. McKell Time Out by David F. McKell Each year we have four seasons, While glancing at the calendar, To me, Spring is the best! I realized a lot of things. It always shows us great promise, That time does fly, quite rapidly, That beats out all the rest! And every day has wings.

Just glance around and take a look It seems like only yesterday, At the beauty shining through. That a chill was in the air. With all the rosebuds and chirping birds, And now the sunlight fills the sky, Outlined by skies of blue. With flowers everywhere.

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for, So stop and take a deep breath, Through hail and sleet and snow. And pause and look around, So sit back, relax and take it all in, To appreciate the colorful beauty, As you watch the gardens grow. Spreading all over the ground.

And don’t forget the lovely sunsets, But alas, the hours are fleeting, At the closing of your day. Each day seems to go quite too fast. Their happy view, will make sure you, So, “gather your rosebuds while ye may,” Will sleep the night away. As the old poet once said in the past!

Let’s enjoy the Vernal Equinox, I also suggest that you put down the “texter”, As the old poets often said. And tweet no more, for a while. And thank the Lord above for this, Just relax, sit back and enjoy the spring, Slice of Daily Bread! I guarantee that you’ll wear a big smile.

The Golden Years by John Taratunio, Fairfield Condos Memorial Day

On my way to a senior meeting 2010 To meet with my senior friends I left a little early by Commander Ed Gaskell To arrive before the meeting ends. This Memorial Day Suddenly I realized, I forgot When the Flag passes by The meeting place Held by a Veteran And turned around quickly Hold your head high Before I vanished without a trace. And your hand on your heart And thank all the Veterans now I’ve heard about senior moments Who have done their part. I don’t remember having any yet If it happened to me in the past This Memorial Day Well, I forgot how many times I forget. We should all pause to pray And give thanks to our troops It’s pretty easy becoming a senior Who stand in harm’s way It should happen to everyone some day So that as Americans we may You can tell it’s time for you Live Free. When your joints ache and your hair turns gray.

Don’t feel bad about becoming a senior Growing old doesn’t happen over-night And though the years may seem to fly by The Golden Years could be a real delight.
