A Study of the Figure of Prominent Woman in the Sagas of Icelanders
A STUDY OF THE FIGURE OF THE PROMINENT WOMAN IN THE SAGAS OF ICELANDERS, WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON NJÁLS SAGA, LAXDÆLA SAGA, AND GUNNLAUGS SAGA ORMSTUNGU. The figure of the prominent woman is a common image throughout the Sagas of Icelanders, often resulting in some of the most memorable female characters found on Old Norse literature. The prominent woman is characterised by some admirable qualities, for example, wisdom, beauty, determination, and strong-mindedness. However, she is also often attributed with some less desirable characteristics, such as spite, greed, a vengeful nature, and a taste for violence. These women function in different ways in the sagas, sometimes appearing as the beautiful temptress, the whetter, or the wise woman, but all ultimately cause tragedy as a consequence of their actions. In this essay I am going to argue that the prominent women of the sagas represent the male’s misogynistic fear of the powerful masculine woman who threatens male dominance. I will focus on the prominent women in Njáls saga, Laxdæla saga, and Gunnlaugs saga ormstungu, particularly the figures of Hallgerd Hoskuldsdottir, Gudrun Osvifsdottir, and Helga Thorsteinsdottir (the Fair). In the texts, all of these women deviate from the societal norms expected of medieval Icelandic women, albeit in different ways. Indeed, all of these women have similar functions in the texts, appearing as scapegoats for male weakness and serving as a warning for both men and woman alike against the destructive power of the strong female figure. Women in medieval Icelandic society were under the control of the men in their family, whether that be a husband, father, or brothers.1 Indeed, women had little say in the important events of their lives and were expected to marry whomever the men in their family decided. -

ELIZABETH ASHMAN ROWE FOLKTALE AND PARABLE: The Unity o/Gautreks Saga As SEVERAL SCHOLARS have pointed out, Gautreks saga has no single pro- tagonist, no chronological plot, and a haphazard assortment of characters and settings.' It is currently considered a single text, but the heterogenous nature of its parts is so great that it has led in the past to the perception of these parts 2 as constituting relatively independent/?œrf/7. Despite such „deviations" from the techniques of classical composition, I would like to propose that a single 3 theme does inform the saga. In it, the traditional characteristics of the suc- 1 E.g., Boyer (1979) and Kathryn Hume (1973). Joseph Harris (1975, 1986:210 ff.) has drawn attention to a number of texts which do not display „biographical unity", such as Qg- mundar þáttr dytts ok Gunnars helmings, and Gautreks saga can be added to the list. Although Gautreks saga is preserved in two versions, one shorter and earlier, and the other longer and later, it is with the longer one, believed written towards the end of the thirteenth century, that I am concemed. See Ranisch (1900:i—xviii). The shorter version, whose lack of detail makes the action seem illogical and unmotivated, also does not include the story of Starkaðr. Henceforth, references to Gautreks saga indicate the longer version unless specified otherwise. 2 So Schier (1970:76, 78, 89). Hermann Pálsson and Edwards (1985:10-3) give no hint in the introduction to their translation that Gautreks saga might be „separable", and the assumption of the unity of Gautreks saga is essential to the argument of Régis Boyer (1979). -

MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 22, No. 1 (2020) 1 Pilgrims to Thule: Religion and the Supernatural in Travel Literature about Iceland Matthias Egeler Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Abstract The depiction of religion, spirituality, and/or the ‘supernatural’ in travel writing, and more generally interconnections between religion and tourism, form a broad and growing field of research in the study of religions. This contribution presents the first study in this field that tackles tourism in and travel writing about Iceland. Using three contrasting pairs of German and English travelogues from the 1890s, the 1930s, and the 2010s, it illustrates a number of shared trends in the treatment of religion, religious history, and the supernatural in German and English travel writing about Iceland, as well as a shift that happened in recent decades, where the interests of travel writers seem to have undergone a marked change and Iceland appears to have turned from a land of ancient Northern mythology into a country ‘where people still believe in elves’. The article tentatively correlates this shift with a change in the Icelandic self-representation, highlights a number of questions arising from both this shift and its seeming correlation with Icelandic strategies of tourism marketing, and notes a number of perspectives in which Iceland can be a highly relevant topic for the research field of religion and tourism. Introduction England and Germany have long shared a deep fascination with Iceland. In spite of Iceland’s location far out in the North Atlantic and the comparative inaccessibility that this entailed, travellers wealthy enough to afford the long overseas passage started flocking to the country even in the first half of the nineteenth century. -

Classic Novels: Meeting the Challenge of Great Literature Parts I–III Professor Arnold Weinstein THE TEACHING COMPANY ® Arnold Weinstein, Ph.D. Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, Brown University Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1940, Arnold Weinstein attended public schools before going to Princeton University for his college education (B.A. in Romance Languages, 1962, magna cum laude). He spent a year studying French literature at the Université de Paris (1960−1961) and a year after college at the Freie Universität Berlin, studying German literature. His graduate work was done at Harvard University (M.A. in Comparative Literature, 1964; Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, 1968), including a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the Université de Lyon in 1966−1967. Professor Weinstein’s professional career has taken place almost entirely at Brown University, where he has gone from Assistant Professor to his current position as Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature. He won the Workman Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Humanities in 1995. He has also won a number of prestigious fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship in American literature at Stockholm University in 1983 and research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1998 (in the area of literature and medicine) and in 2007 (in the area of Scandinavian literature). WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Hermann Ptilsson Aspects of Norse Place Nallles in the Western Isles I St. Gregory the Great (d. 604) has long been recognized as an outstanding literary interpreter, particularly by those who acknowledge the principle of polysemy or multiplicity of meaning. In a striking passage (quoted here from memory) he suggests that the words of Holy Writ could be compared to square stones; since it is impossible to observe all the sides of such a stone simultaneously, we must turn it over in order to see each of its facets. The same applies, he argues, to the words of the Bible: individual expressions have several meanings and functions, which we cannot properly grasp without observing them from different viewpoints. The learned pope is here, of course, concerned with the 'literal', 'allegorical', 'moral' and 'anagogic' meanings which were supposed to be a special quality of the Bible, but in recent decades the basic principles involved have become fashionable in certain critical circles dealing with secular literature as well (Frye 1957, 72 and elsewhere). Like the multi-faceted or polysemous words of the Bible, Norse place names in the Western Isles have several aspects to them, and it seems desirable that no facet should be omitted from consideration. It is proposed to use St. Gregory's exegetical principle as an intellectual framework for the purpose of organizing a systematic and comprehensive programme for the investigation of those names. When I allude to the three-dimensional Gregorian model in this context, I have in mind that each facet of our notional stone represents a particular area of research, and that once we have satisfactorily dealt with all six aspects of a particular name, the investigation of it has been completed. -

ICELAND AS AN IMAGINARY PLACE IN A EUROPEAN CONTEXT – SOME LITERARY REPRESENTATIONS Sveinn Yngvi Egilsson University of Iceland [email protected] Abstract The article focuses on the image of Iceland and Iceland as an imaginary place in literature from the nineteenth century onwards. It is especially concerned with the aesthetics or discourse of the sublime, claiming that it is the common denominator in many literary images of Iceland. The main proponents of this aesthetics or discourse in nineteenth-century Icelandic literature are discussed before pointing to further developments in later times. Among those studied are the nineteenth-century poets Bjarni Thorarensen (1786-1841), Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807- 1845), Grímur Thomsen (1820-1896) and Steingrímur Thorsteinsson (1831-1913), along with a number of contemporary Icelandic writers. Other literary discourses also come into play, such as representing Iceland as "the Hellas of the North", with the pastoral mode or discourse proving to have a lasting appeal to Icelandic writers and often featuring as the opposite of the sublime in literary descriptions of Iceland. This article will focus on the image of Iceland and on Iceland as an imaginary place in literature from the nineteenth century onwards. It will especially be concerned with the aesthetics of the sublime, claiming that it is the common denominator in many literary images of Iceland. The main proponents of this aesthetics in nineteenth-century Icelandic literature are discussed before pointing to further developments in later times. By looking at a number of literary works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, it is suggested that this aesthetics can be seen to continue in altered form into the present day. -

My name is Aisha Al- Sadie and I am the Learning Officer at Winchester Cathedral. Today I am going to be telling you a very old tale that has been passed down through the centuries through storytelling. In the past not everyone could read or write, so they passed on their people’s histories through stories! The story you are about to hear is a very small part of a large collection of tales called a saga, you may have heard that word before. This story comes from a collection of stories about the Vikings, called the Volsunga Saga. As stories were passed on through word of mouth over the years, they changed, as people made them more exciting and dramatic to keep their audience entertained and interested. So in this tradition I am going to tweaking my version of the story for you. After you have heard the story you may wish to visit Winchester Cathedral, as we have a beautiful carved piece of stone in our Kings and Scribes exhibition. This carved piece of stone shows part of the story, and it is called the Sigmund Stone. You will be able to come and see it from the 17th of May, subject to government guidelines. Let’s begin. This is an Old Norse tale, told for centuries in the flickering light of the night fire. King Canute, who ruled England from 1016 to 1035, was a Danish Viking and also King of Denmark and Norway.
