DON’T FORGET TO VOTE – March 13, 2018

CCUSD is ranked #1 in Maricopa for Student Achievement

A Note from the Superintendent… Dear CCUSD Parents, Community and Staff,

It is hard to believe that we are looking at spring right around the corner. March is an important school month as we continue to move through critical curriculum before students are measured on the state AzMERIT or End of Course exams. We also have our final K-12 Parent-Teacher Conferences after the end of the third quarter on March 16th. Please take this opportunity to communicate with your child’s teacher(s) about any concerns or questions that you have about their work and progress.

An important date to remember is Rock the District (RTD), put on by the Cave Creek Unified Education Foundation to support our teachers in their classrooms with grant dollars each year. RTD is on Saturday, March 3rd this year at Stagecoach Village opening at 4 pm and music starting at 5. Come out and support our students and teachers. Tickets are available at www.rockthedistrict.net.

Finally, enjoy having your children home for spring break—March 26-30th—and we will welcome them back on April 2nd.

I look forward to seeing you in our schools!

Sincerely, Debbi Burdick Get Social with CCUSD

Administrator(s) of the month… Congratulations to Bruce McWhorter, Director of Transportation and Jenny Stahl, Education & Community Services’ Preschool Coordinator, for being named Administrators of the Month for January and February, 2018.

CCUSD World Language & Language Immersion classrooms… Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) has identified a win-win situation for the teacher shortage in its K-12th grade World Language and Language Immersion classrooms. By tapping into the Embassy of Spain, the Chinese Ministry of Education and more recently, the French Embassy, CCUSD has employed or offered volunteer placements to 18 educators from Spain, France, Canada, Taiwan and China.

These ministries of education and embassies have their teachers go through an extensive interview process before being placed into the international pool for other countries to choose from. The international teachers all have full teaching degrees, be it from their home countries or from a U.S. university. CCUSD World Language Program Coordinator, Cristina Ladas, oversees all aspects related to this project and comments, “the authenticity that these international teachers bring benefits both them and their CCUSD students. Students learn another language from someone native to that language and culture. On the flip side, the international teachers learn new strategies for how to best teach American students.” For now, this is one solution to help world language and immersion programs continue to grow in CCUSD and in AZ.

DISTRICT NEWS

A Message from the Superintendent… The message below was sent to all CCUSD staff, parents and community on February 16, 2018:

February 16, 2018

Dear Parents, Staff and Community,

I know our entire CCUSD community has the Parkland, Florida, community in their thoughts after the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The safety of our students and staff is the number one priority at the Cave Creek Unified School District.

8 All of our schools and departments have detailed emergency plans. We work closely with the Scottsdale and Phoenix police and fire departments, as well as Maricopa County Sheriff's Department to be prepared for emergencies. We have Homeland Security visit and audit our school sites for improvements. Our schools conduct drills and review procedures for scenarios we hope we never need.

As your children ask about the Florida tragedy, talk honestly but appropriately for their age and answer any questions they may have. Also remind them that they have practiced what to do to in order to stay safe.

Remember to report any suspicious behavior to your local police. Remind your children to report any suspicious behavior at school to their teachers or principal immediately.

Our school counselors and administrators are ready to assist students in any way. Please contact them with any concerns or if your student requires additional support.

Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children. We will continue to not only educate them with excellence but keep them safe.

Sincerely,

Debbi C. Burdick, Ed.D. Superintendent
