Malhamdale and Southern/South Western Dales Fringes + Physical Influences Malhamdale The landscape of Malhamdale is dominated by the influence of limestone, and includes some of the most spectacular examples of this type of scenery within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and within the United Kingdom as a whole. Great Scar limestone dominates the scenery around Malham, attaining a thickness of over 200m. It was formed in the Carboniferous period, some 330 million years ago, by the slow deposition of shell debris and chemical precipitates on the floor of a shallow tropical sea. The presence of faultlines creates dramatic variations in the scenery. South of Malham Tarn is the North Craven Fault, and Malham Cove and Gordale Scar, two miles to the south, were formed by the Mid Craven Fault. Easy erosion of the softer shale rocks to the south of the latter fault has created a sharp southern edge to the limestone plateau north of the fault. This step in the landscape was further developed by erosion during the various ice ages when glaciers flowing from the north deepened the basin where the tarn now stands and scoured the rock surface between the tarn and the village, leading later to the formation of limestone pavements. Glacial meltwater carved out the Watlowes dry valley above the cove. There are a number of theories as to the formation of the vertical wall of limestone that forms Malham Cove, whose origins appear to be in a combination of erosion by ice, water and underground water. It is thought that water pouring down the Watlowes valley would have cascaded over the cove and cut the waterfall back about 600 metres from the faultline, although this does not explain why the cove is wider than the valley above. -

Wander Lancashire & Cheshire Entomological Society November 2003 1 1. Introduction Welcome to the 2002 report on lepidoptera in VC58 (Cheshire). This is the second report to appear in 2003 and follows on from the release of the 2001 version earlier this year. Hopefully we are now on course to return to an annual report, with the 2003 report planned for the middle of next year. Plans for the ‘Atlas of Lepidoptera in VC58’ continue apace. We had hoped to produce a further update to the Atlas but this report is already quite a large document. We will, therefore produce a supplementary report on the Pug Moths recorded in VC58 sometime in early 2004, hopefully in time to be sent out with the next newsletter. As usual, we have produced a combined report covering micro-moths, macro- moths and butterflies, rather than separate reports on all three groups. Doubtless observers will turn first to the group they are most interested in, but please take the time to read the other sections. Hopefully you will find something of interest. Many thanks to all recorders who have already submitted records for 2002. Without your efforts this report would not be possible. Please keep the records coming! This request also most definitely applies to recorders who have not sent in records for 2002 or even earlier. It is never too late to send in historic records as they will all be included within the above-mentioned Atlas when this is produced. -

The site is immediately adjacent to the M6 motorway towards the west, Borwick Lane to the north and Kellet Lane to the east with the River Keer running along the southern boundary of the site. The site is characterised by its extensive amount of open water consisting of 9 active fishing lakes spanning an overall site area of approximately 72 acres (29 hectares) with a dual pitched timber clad restaurant/café building (Catch 23) and car park located in close proximity to the entrance. The whole site is relatively flat with mainly grassed surfaces and sporadic groves of trees on small islands within the lakes. There is also a recently-engineered earth bund and a belt of mature trees positioned between the M6 Motorway along the western boundary of the site. -

All rights reserved Click on this link to visit Lancashire’s geology and its contribution to known building stones, stone structures and building stone quarries (Opens in new window http://maps.bgs.ac.uk/buildingstone?County=Lancashire ) Lancashire Strategic Stone Study 1 Introduction The bedrock geology of Lancashire is dominated by fine to very coarse-grained SANDSTONES of Carboniferous and, to a lesser extent, Permo-Triassic age. There are, in addition, locally important outcrops of LIMESTONE. The Carboniferous rocks occupy a broad swathe of the east of the county, wrapping around a Triassic ‘core’ in the lowlands of the west, which is largely buried under thick accumulations of glacial till (Quaternary). The competence of the Carboniferous sandstones is reflected in the rugged moorland of east Lancashire, which in turn is reflected in the ‘sturdy’ character of the built landscape. The limestones present in northern Lancashire and around Clitheroe bring a lighter ‘openness’ to the villages of these areas. Lowland Lancashire, meanwhile, is primarily brick country, with the exception of some Triassic sandstone pockets around Ormskirk and Heysham. The widespread availability of durable building stone led to the development of quarrying throughout central and eastern Lancashire, with Rossendale (during the 1870s) exporting vast amounts of building stone to other areas of Britain and also abroad. Only a small number of quarries produce building stone today, with most of the industry now focussing on the supply of crushed stone products. -
