Box 232, Kerrville, TX 78028 ABSTRACT Eleodes armatus LeConte, the pinacate beetle, occurs throughout the warm deserts and intermontane valleys of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is a scavenger, feeding mainly on plant and animal detritus, and it hides in rodent burrows during times of temperature extremes. Adult activity peaks in the fall but it may occur at any time of the year. Females produce several hundred eggs per season and adults may live for more than 1 year. Larvae are fossorial and require 9 months to develop. The broad ecological, geographical, temporal and dietary range of this beetle may be in part attributable to its defense mechanisms (repugnatorial secretions and allied be- havior) against vertebrate predators. On the black earth on which the ice plants bloomed, hundreds of black stink bugs crawled. And many of them stuck their tails up in the air. "Look at all them stink bugs," Hazel remarked, grateful to the bugs for being there. "They're interesting," said Doc. "Well, what they got their asses up in the air for?" Doc rolled up his wool socks and put them in the rubber boots and from his pocket he brought out dry socks and a pair of thin moccasins. "I don't know why," he said, "I looked them up recently-they're very common animals and one of the commonest things they do is put their tails up in the air. -

The park’s saproxylic beetle fauna, associated with dead wood and veteran trees, can be considered as nationally important. Munis Entomology & Zoology, 9 (2): 687-712] ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to create a Turkish Red List of the longicorn beetles. Moreover, presence such a Red List is necessary for Turkey. Even governmental evaluations could cause some erroneous decisions due to absence such a Red List. Since, governmental evaluations at the present time are based on the works that are realized with respect to the European Red List. Furthernore, Turkey appears a continental property changeable in very short distances in terms of climatical features and field structures. So, the status of European fauna and the status of Turkish fauna are not the same. Clearly, there is no any work that subjected to create a Turkish Red List except Parts I-VII. Hence, a series work is planned with this purpose. This type of study is the eighth attempt for Turkey. KEY WORDS: Red List, Conservation, Cerambycidae, Turkey. The purpose of the current study was to create a Turkish Red List of longicorn beetles similarly to “European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles” that was compiled by Ana Nieto & Keith N. A. Janetschek) Als Untersuchungsgebiet wählte Verfasser einen Standort west- lich von Innsbruck im Gemeindegebiet von Zirl (Tirol, Österreich) am Fuße der bekannten Martinswand am westlichen Hechen- bergsüdabfall zwischen Martinsbühel und Pilgerschrofen. Dort er- streckt sich ein S-exponierter Hang vom Flußbett des Inns von ca. 580 m bis unterhalb der Gallerie der Eisenbahnlinie Innsbruck-See- feld in ca. 820 m (Abb. 1-)). Geologisch liegt das Untersuchungsgebiet ganz im Bereich des triadischen Wettersteinkalkes und schmaler Ein- schaltungen von weichen Partnachschichten. Nur stellenweise hat sich auf Hangschutt eine dünne Bodendecke bilden können. Meteorologi- sche Daten können nur aus einigen umliegenden Stationen wie Hoch- zirl, Völs oder Innsbruck-Flughafen entnommen werden (siehe F 1 i r i, 1975). Schon Handel-Mazetti (1939) rechnet das Ge- biet des Hechenberges zur Oberinntaler Trockenzone. Die durch- schnittliche Jahresniederschlagsmenge (1931-60) dürfte im Untersu- chungsgebiet bei 700 mm liegen mit Schwerpunkt des Niederschlages im Sommer, die durchschnittliche Jahrestemperatur des Untersu- chungsgebietes ist schwieriger anzugeben, die durchschnittliche Son- denscheindauer in "/o der lokal horizontbedingt möglichen dürfte im Jahr etwas über 50 ^/o betragen. Die Vegetation besteht im Bereich des Innufers aus einem wenige Meter breiten Alnus incana-Augürtel mit eingestreuten Populus nig- ra, P. tremula und Salix sp. Bäumen, ansteigend kleine anthropogen beeinflußte Steilwiesen mit Carduus und Cirsium-Arten bis zur Bun- desstraße und im steilen Hang mit kleinen Felswänden und schottri- gen Bachbetten Trockenwiesen mit Stipa sp., Glohularia cordijolia, Dorycnium germanicum etc. -

Large grazing herbivores drive the ecology of the site and can have a profound impact on invertebrates, both positive and negative. This survey was commissioned in order to assess the site’s invertebrate assemblage in a standardised and repeatable way both internally between fields and sections and temporally between years. Niche Partitioning Among Dead Wood-Dependent Beetles
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Niche partitioning among dead wood‑dependent beetles Jakub Horák Niche partitioning among species with virtually the same requirements is a fundamental concept in ecology. Nevertheless, some authors suggest that niches have little involvement in structuring communities. This study was done in the Pardubice Region (Czech Republic) on saproxylic beetles with morphologically similar larvae and very specifc requirements, which are related to their obligatory dependence on dead wood material: Cucujus cinnaberinus, Pyrochroa coccinea, and Schizotus pectinicornis. This work was performed on 232 dead wood pieces at the landscape scale over six years. Based on the factors studied, the relationships among these species indicated that their co‑occurrence based on species presence and absence was low, which indicated niche partitioning. However, based on analyses of habitat requirements and species composition using observed species abundances, there was no strong evidence for niche partitioning at either studied habitat levels, the tree and the microhabitat. The most likely reasons for the lack of strong niche partitioning were that dead wood is a rich resource and co‑occurrence of saproxylic community was not driven by resource competition. This might be consistent with the theory that biodiversity could be controlled by the neutral drift of species abundance. Nevertheless, niche partitioning could be ongoing, meaning that the expanding C. cinnaberinus may have an advantage over the pyrochroids and could dominate in the long term. Te biotic interactions and habitat requirements in terms of abiotic conditions of a species characterize its posi- tion in the ecosystem—i.e., its ecological niche 1.
