    A HISTORY OF OUR CHURCH Welcome to our beautiful little church, named after St Botolph*, the 7th century patron saint of wayfarers who founded many churches in the East of England. The present church on this site was built in 1263 in the Early English style. This was at the request and expense of Sir William de Thorpe, whose family later built Longthorpe Tower. At first a chapel in the parish of St John it was consecrated as a church in 1850. The church has been well used and much loved for over 750 years. It is noted for its stone, brass and stained glass memorials to men killed in World War One, to members of the St John and Strong families of Thorpe Hall and to faithful members of the congregation. WILD ABSTRACT Antiquarian and modern excavations at Castor, Cambs., have been taking place since the seventeenth century. The site, which lies under the modern village, has been variously described as a Roman villa, a guild centre and a palace, while Edmund Artis working in the 1820s termed it the ‘Praetorium’. The Roman buildings covered an area of 3.77 ha (9.4 acres) and appear to have had two main phases, the latter of which formed a single unified structure some 130 by 90 m. This article attempts to draw together all of the previous work at the site and provide a comprehensive plan, a set of suggested dates, and options on how the remains could be interpreted. INTRODUCTION his article provides a summary of various excavations and surveys of a large group of Roman buildings found beneath Castor village, Cambs. (centred on TL 124 984). The village of Castor T lies 8 km to the west of Peterborough (FIG. 1) and rises on a slope above the first terrace gravel soils of the River Nene to the south. The underlying geology is mixed, with the lower part of the village (8 m AOD) sitting on both terrace gravel and Lower Lincolnshire limestone, while further up the valley side the Upper Estuarine Series and Blisworth Limestone are encountered, with a capping of Blisworth Clay at the top of the slope (23 m AOD).1 The slope of the ground on which the Roman buildings have been arranged has not been emphasised enough or even mentioned in earlier accounts of the site.2 The current evidence suggests that substantial Roman terracing and the construction of revetment or retaining walls was required to consolidate the underlying geology.

    PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. The Conference is promoting a public discussion of the nature of establishment and the challenges it may face in the years ahead, both from a constitutional vantage point and in parochial ministry for the national church. A stellar collection of experts has been brought together for a unique conference which will seek to re-imagine the national church and public religion in the increasingly secular world in the current second Elizabethan age and hereafter. Robert Blackburn will deliver a keynote lecture on constitutional issues of monarchy, parliament and the Church of England. Norman Doe and Colin Podmore will assess the centenaries of, respectively, the Welsh Church Act 1914 and the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act 1919 (known as the ‘Enabling Act’), and the experience of English and Welsh Anglicanism over this period.

    Abington Pastoral Letter No.46 06.03.2021 Dear friends We shall not lose them Since I announced that the services will be livestreamed from the church building, not from the Rectory from this Sunday, many friends told me how much they appreciated and enjoyed the services we have been sharing over the last couple of months. Thank you so much for all those encouraging and kind messages. Over the last 12 months of this journey, it has become absolutely clear to us now that the Eucharist celebrated in an ordinary home can be as holy and appropriate as the Eucharist celebrated in a grand cathedral. We have been blessed, comforted and inspired by the co- presence of the homeliness and holiness in our offering of the Eucharist; a child's curious look and innocent response at the presence of the sacrament; the endless love and grace of God to us revealed in the imperfect, humble but genuine offering of our worship and prayer. I really believe, friends, that was our moments of encountering God in this unexpected journey in the wilderness just like the people of Israel did when they were wandering in the wilderness after coming out of Egypt. It appears that the landscape will gradually start changing. We will slowly come out of the wilderness. We are not there yet. And there will be still significant challenges ahead of us. But things will be a little bit different than how they were 12 months ago. And we must not lose or forget what we experienced, learnt and discovered about our God, ourselves and our worship.
