06 Impacts Thinking globally. Acting globally. While impact can be measured in many ways, the greatest impact lies beyond the scope of any instrument or scale. It’s the power of technology to transform the lives of individuals and groups of individuals the world over.

The programs, projects and people featured here have all made an impact on—or been impacted by—the Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Campaign.

Smart Village: Closing the Energy Gap for the World’s Most Energy-Impoverished Citizens.

The IEEE Smart Village (ISV) program has a unique approach to supporting the world’s energy-impoverished communities—by providing a comprehensive solution combining renewable energy, community-based education and entrepreneurial opportunities.

As part of its mission, ISV provides seed-funding to carefully selected community entrepreneurs based upon credible business plans that will impact a significant number of people through electricity, education and jobs.

07 Lights for the Enlightened

A joint effort between IEEE Smart Village and the Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE) brought electric lighting to remote populations in the Himalayan region of Northern India—including two Buddhist monasteries that date back to the 12th century.

Previously dependent on sooty kerosene lamps, the people in the mountain villages surrounding the monasteries now have more time to do work, as well as cooking and other chores. Students can study and read longer thanks to more consistent light sources. Streetlights also make walking between buildings safer. The installation at the Lingshed monastery even included a lab with a satellite Internet link.

EPICS in IEEE: Connecting Engineering to Community Service

Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) partners students with professionals and non-profit organizations to provide community service organizations with the technology they need to improve and deliver services and provide undergraduate students with educational experiences to broaden their skills.

Buddy the Dog Makes Friends for Life

Severely injured, one-year-old German Shepherd puppy Buddy was found abandoned outside of an animal care facility in early May 2018. In order to save Buddy’s life, his veterinary team opted to amputate the bottom half of his back leg but lacked the technology to fit him for a prosthesis that would grant him full range of motion.

That’s when IEEE-HKN Iota Delta Chapter and student volunteers from Stevens Institute of Technology came to the rescue, thanks to an EPICS in IEEE grant. The team set out to create a completely functional trans-tibial (below the knee) dog prosthesis and plans to showcase and demonstrate the prototype robotic prosthesis to K-12 students both in a classroom setting and in a summer camp program during a hands-on laboratory robotics session.

• Focus on sustainable solutions that make a long-term IMPACT REALIZED DURING CAMPAIGN difference in people’s lives 4 Projects Funded • Operate through local volunteers and partners working with local communities

• Prioritize success achieved through partnerships, starting with the community and extending to government organizations, NGOs, schools, hospitals, companies and others

• Value sustainability, so continuous training and education are essential

While the SIGHT program was conceptualized in 2011, it was added to the IEEE Foundation family of funds in 2019. In just a short time, we have already kick-started funding for four projects, and the IEEE Foundation looks forward to supporting more SIGHT projects in the future.

TryEngineering Summer Institutes

In 2019, 30 high school students attended the TryEngineering Summer Institute thanks to need-based scholarships through the IEEE Foundation. They joined 125 other high school students, collectively representing 10 countries.

The generosity of individuals, organizations and 12 IEEE societies and councils helped make attending the camp a reality for students with varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Recipients commented that attending this “eye-opening” and “life-changing” program would not have been possible without the scholarships.

09 PES Scholarship Plus: Preparing the Next Generation of Power and Energy Engineers

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Scholarship Plus provides scholarships plus real-world experience to undergraduates interested in power and energy engineering careers.

These undergraduate engineering scholarships aim to accomplish this goal by attracting highly qualified engineering students to the field. These students are the very individuals who will one day develop new green technologies, build the and change the way we generate and utilize power. Science Kits for Public Libraries (SKPL) makes science kits as easy to check out of a public library as a book! With access to a public library and a valid library card, children can check out high-quality, hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and ) experiences—at zero cost to their parents.

Initiated by the Chicago Section in 2009, the program has expanded into Region 4 with the support of funds raised during the Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Campaign.

10 Life Members: Giving Back to Those Who’ve Led Us Forward

IEEE “Life” status is automatically bestowed to IEEE members based on age and years of membership. It’s proof of a strong and sustained commitment to the profession. The Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Campaign allows the IEEE Foundation to continue its strong and sustained commitment to Life Members.

The Life Members Fund supports programs that enhance the activities of Life members, potential engineers, engineering students and professionals worldwide.
