Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins
Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins Barbican Art Gallery, Barbican Centre, UK 28 February – 27 May 2018 Media View, Tuesday 27 February, 10am – 1pm The exhibition is supported by The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. Media Partner: AnOther Magazine #AnotherKindofLife Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins looks at the continuing fascination of artists with those on the margins of society through the photographic medium. Some of the most powerful images of the 20th and 21st century are the result of a determined and often prolonged engagement with communities seemingly at odds with, or on the fringes of, the mainstream. Another Kind of Life explores photography’s relationship with this compelling subject through the work of 20 exceptional image-makers, including Bruce Davidson, Paz Errázuriz, Casa Susanna, Larry Clark, Mary Ellen Mark, Boris Mikhailov, Daido Moriyama and Dayanita Singh. Part of the Barbican’s 2018 season The Art of Change, which reflects on the dialogue between art, society and politics, the exhibition directly – and at times poetically – addresses difficult questions about what it means to exist in the margins, the role artists have played in portraying subcultures and the complex intermingling between artistic and mainstream depictions of the outsider. Another Kind of Life opens at Barbican Art Gallery on 28 February 2018. Jane Alison, Head of Visual Arts, Barbican, said: ‘Barbican Art Gallery has always championed groundbreaking photography, placing it at the heart of our programme with recent highlights including Constructing Worlds: Photography and Architecture in the Modern Age (2014) and Strange and Familiar: Britain as Revealed by International Photographers(2016). -

These projects paved the way for future photographers of the ordinary and everyday such as Martin Parr, Thomas Struth, and Nan Goldin. Shore is one of the most important artists working today, and his prints are included in collections of eminent museums and galleries around the world. On July 3, 1973, Stephen Shore set out on the road again. This road trip marked an important point in his career, as he was coming to the tail end of American Surfaces and embarking on a body of work that is known as Uncommon Places. While traveling, in addition to taking photographs, Shore also distributed a set of postcards that he had made and printed himself. While passing through Amarillo, Texas, Shore selected ten of his own photographs of places of note, such as Dougs Barb-B- Que and the Potter County Court House, and designed the back of the cards to look like a typical generic postcard. -

Starting in the early 1960s, Joel Meyerowitz went out on the streets, day in, and day out, powered by his passion and devotion to photography, in order to study people and see how photographs described what they were doing. In order to catch the vibes he ranges over the streets of New York, together with Tony Ray-Jones and later with his friend Garry Winogrand. Different from Tony Ray-Jones and Garry Winogrand, Meyerowitz loaded his camera with color film in order to capture life realistically, which meant shooting in color for him. While his first photographs are often determined in a situational way, he starts, early on, putting the subject not only in the centre, but consciously leaving the centre of the picture space free and extending the picture-immanent parts over the whole frame. His dealing with picture space and composition, which consciously differ from those of his idols like Robert Frank and Cartier-Besson, create a unique style. -

The Museum of Modern Art in Queens Presents Last Chance to View Ansel Adams Centennial Exhibition
THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN QUEENS PRESENTS LAST CHANCE TO VIEW ANSEL ADAMS CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION Exhibition Presents Critical Re-evaluation of Adams as an Artist and Photographer Ansel Adams at 100 July 11—November 3, 2003 MoMA QNS, Long Island City, Queens NEW YORK, July 9, 2003—The Museum of Modern Art presents the final opportunity to see Ansel Adams at 100, on view from July 11 to November 3, 2003, at MoMA QNS, the last venue on the international tour. Although Adams’s work has been more widely exhibited than that of perhaps any artist in the twentieth century, his oeuvre has not been fundamentally re-evaluated since his death in 1984. This centenary exhibition presents an aesthetic reappraisal of Adams (1902–1984) as an artist and working photographer by bringing together 113 of his finest photographs, represented by exemplary prints drawn from important public and private collections. The exhibition was organized for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art by guest curator John Szarkowski, Director Emeritus of MoMA’s Department of Photography. Ansel Adams at 100 has been organized with the cooperation of The Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust and the Adams family. The international tour is made possible by Hewlett-Packard. According to Mr. Szarkowski, “Ansel Adams was one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. He was also one of the best-loved spokesmen for the obligations we owe to the natural world. It has been easy to confuse the related but distinct achievements that earned him these twin honors. The subject of the exhibition and catalogue is Adams the artist.” Ansel Adams at 100 situates photographer’s iconic works, such as Mount Williamson, from Manzanar (c. -
