  • Michael Daley Elected NSW Labor Party Leader, Promising to 'Press the Reset Button'
Michael Daley elected NSW Labor Party leader, promising to 'press the reset button' SMH November 2018 Lisa Visentin Maroubra MP Michael Daley has secured the leadership of the NSW Labor Party, and pledged to "fix the planning system in NSW" should he be elected Premier in March. New NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley and Deputy Leader Penny Sharpe speak to media. CREDIT: DOMINIC LORRIMER The newly elected leader laid out his vision for government as one "built on four pillars", naming investment in education and hospitals, easing the cost of living, jobs, and overdevelopment as his core priorities. "We will make Sydney more liveable and stop unfairness and overdevelopment in the planning system," Mr Daley said. Mr Daley comfortably defeated Kogarah MP Chris Minns in the leadership vote 33 to 12 on Saturday. Penny Sharpe, an upper house member and Labor's environment spokeswoman, was elected deputy unopposed. Mr Daley addressed voters directly in his first press conference as Labor leader, promising to "press the reset button" in the wake of former leader Luke Foley's spectacular fall from grace. "I'm not here to save the furniture. We are here to win the 2019 election," Mr Daley said. Michael Daley hugs his wife Christina after the NSW Labor party leadership ballot. CREDIT: DOMINIC LORRIMER With just four months until the state election, Mr Daley's speech resembled an election pitch. He declared there to be "something horribly wrong at the heart" of the NSW Liberal government, describing his opponents as "a government of bankers, by bankers, for bankers." The Berejiklian government was quick to launch its attack on Mr Daley as representative of NSW Labor's old guard, highlighting his erstwhile connections with corrupt former MPs Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald.

The Deputy Speaker (The Hon. Thomas George) took the chair at 12.00. The Deputy Speaker read the Prayer and acknowledgement of country Visitors VISITORS The DEPUTY SPEAKER: I extend a warm welcome to my guests Uday Huja, Jason Alcock, Dany Karam, Christopher Smith and Buddika Gunawardana, who are chefs from The Star visiting the Parliament today. [Notices of motions given.] Private Members' Statements TRIBUTE TO SUPERINTENDENT JULIAN GRIFFITHS Ms ELENI PETINOS (Miranda) (12:13): I rise to discuss and farewell the outgoing commander from the Sutherland Shire Police Area Command, Superintendent Julian Griffiths. Our local media has publicised that Superintendent Griffiths has been moved from the Sutherland Shire Police Area Command into the St George Police Area Command. Those of us who have had the opportunity to work with the superintendent, and to know him well, are going to miss him dearly. Media reports have not captured that Superintendent Griffiths is a capable and competent commander who has always been dedicated to serving the local community. He has done that in his capacity as a superintendent of both the Sutherland Shire Local Area Command and the merged Sutherland Shire Police Area Command over the past six years. I was recently told a story about Superintendent Griffiths which highlights the depth of his care and the lengths that he has gone to for the community. It is about the recent fires in the western part of the shire, in Menai, Alfords Point and Barden Ridge.

  • A Labor Government Will 'Civilise the Place', Says Leader Michael Daley
A Labor government will 'civilise the place', says leader Michael Daley SMH 12 January 2019 Deborah Snow and Alexandra Smith Michael Daley is a self-declared "fish man". Two of the shimmering creatures swim languidly in a small tank in his Parliament House office – the corner suite he took over from Luke Foley when his predecessor flamed out last year. Inside his Maroubra electorate office, his personal study strains to accommodate a five-foot tank, where several venerable specimens are now 20 years old. At home there are more fish (in his young daughter’s bedroom – they’re "forbidden" in the lounge-room), as well as two dogs and a mini rainforest in the backyard populated with frogs, skinks and the odd blue-tongue lizard. Self-confessed "fish man" NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley in his office at Parliament House. CREDIT: DOMINIC LORRIMER Daley’s father John came from dairy farming stock and he was taught from childhood to "treat animals as individuals," he says. "It's a respect for life - I think that's where the fish come from. I like living things, I like creatures, I like the environment." One suspects it takes a particular kind of patience to keep fish alive for two decades – the same patience, perhaps, that allows you to bide your time to become party leader, having played bridesmaid or runner-up for close to eight years. Daley, now 53, was first talked of as possible successor to the state’s last Labor premier, Kristina Keneally, when she led the party to a crushing defeat in 2011.

  • Michael Daley Inaugural Speech.Pdf
Inaugural Speeches Inaugural Speeches Extract from NSW Legislative Assembly Hansard and Papers Wednesday 12 October 2005. Mr MICHAEL DALEY (Maroubra) [7.58 p.m.] (Inaugural speech): I would like to similarly begin by congratulating Steven Chaytor, the honourable member for Macquarie Fields, and Carmel Tebbutt, the honourable member for Marrickville, who were elected on the day I was elected. Having been elected on the same day, I believe we will always share a special bond. As a young legal student I read carefully about the development of democratic institutions in the early colony of New South Wales and I studied the social and legal history and traditions of this House, which, like many similar Chambers in the world, is the inheritor of over 700 years of history and tradition. It is with a sense of awe and great pride that I address the House now for the first time. I do not for one moment fail to appreciate that the people of Maroubra have bestowed upon me what I consider to be the greatest privilege citizens can bestow upon another in a democracy—the opportunity to be their representative in a legislature. I thank the families of Maroubra, my fellow locals, for electing me on 17 September. I have lived every day of my life in the Maroubra electorate. I will not let them down. There have been only three former members for Maroubra—and two of them have been Premiers— Robert James Heffron from the establishment of the seat in 1950 until 1968, William Henry Haig from 1968 until 1983, and Robert John Carr from 1983 until his departure earlier this year.
