REEDONIAN Newsletter SPRING EDITION 39, 2015 REEDONIAN Newsletter SPRING EDITION 39, 2015 With the year culminating in a very favourable ISI Inspection Report, 2014 proved to be a vintage one academically for Reed’s! The end of the summer saw our best ever GCSE results, with over half the boys scoring a total of least seven A* or A grades including over 120 A* grades in separate science IGCSEs and a successful first sitting of IGCSE English. A Level results were good again; most notable was the strong performance by the five pupils who went on to read medicine. We all know about raw exam results that are published in League Tables and we are proud of our track record here. However, where achievement stands out even more clearly is in the measure of the ‘value added’ at Reed’s - put plainly, this measures pupils’ final exam results in the context of their individual entry profile. In the two consecutive inspection periods spanning 2004 to 2014 our record for value added is outstanding. All schools should be adding value but at Reed’s we have consistently seen pupils’ perform way beyond predictions based on their entry level. This is a source of enormous pride and vindication of the work that goes on year upon year, not just in a final burst before public examinations. The ‘Energico’ String Quartet played with energy and commitment and the Brass Choir’s bite-size Carmen provided a fresh look at a celebrated piece.     River Tillingbourne – Albury Estates Advisory Visit April 2018 Key Findings • The Tillingbourne through the Albury Estate land holdings does support viable wild trout habitat but is severely compromised by impounding structures on both beats. • The move to an unstocked, wild fishery will enable the wild component of the stock to develop. • Some excellent work designed to improve habitat quality has already been undertaken but the scope for further enhancement is huge. • The bottom lake on the Vale End Fishery is unsustainable, fragments river habitats, blocks natural fish migration and locally impacts water quality. Removing the dam and reinstating a natural stream would be a flagship project but would undoubtedly attract external funding and support from government agencies as well as catchment partners. • The WTT can help to prepare a costed project proposal and partner the Estate in helping to deliver a sustainable wild trout fishery at Vale End. 1 1.0 Introduction This report is the output of a site visit to the River Tillingbourne on the Albury Estate in Surrey. The Estate management currently runs a network of still-water game fisheries, primarily stocked with farm-reared rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and occasional brown trout (Salmo trutta). In addition, the Estate offers chalkstream fly fishing opportunities on two separate beats of river which run parallel with the Estate’s stocked trout lakes. The Estate also runs a section of syndicated river fishing immediately upstream of the Weston Fishery which is not included in this report. Historically, the river sections available to paying day rods have been stocked with farm-reared brown trout and the Estate have recently ceased stocking on these two day ticket beats and are looking to develop the wild component of the stock via a programme of improved habitat management.

We made significant progress in our work to grow tennis in Britain last year, the highlights of which are outlined in this report. As you will read in my introduction to the Finance and Governance Report, it was a year of transition for the LTA, where we laid down the foundations for our new long-term strategy published earlier this year. I am proud to have been able to contribute to this work since commencing my role as Chairman in September. It should be read alongside the Village Hierarchy study in which we have scored, ranked and categorised each settlement according to a range of considerations. This review used sustainability indicators such as the availability and accessibility of services and facilities, and a functional score to assess how well our rural settlements work. We used the following categories: • urban area • semi-urban village • large village • medium village • small village • loose knit village / hamlet Figure 1 below shows the considerations we used to assess each settlement in order to compile the new settlement hierarchy. It also illustrates the linkages and overlap between these two documents. We have included detailed information regarding the environmental sustainability indicators, contextual information such form and character, and commentary regarding how well each rural settlement functions. We based the latter on feedback we received from each representative parish council. The functional score is split into a range of headline statements, further information of which is available in appendix one. Wade +Aquatic Environments Research Centre, Department of Geography, University of Reading, Whiteknights, Reading, RG6 6AB *British Geological Survey, Wallingford, OX10 8BB 1 Abstract Measurements of nitrate deposition and streamwater chemistry in the Tillingbourne Catchment, in Southern England, made in 1979-1982 and 1999-2001 show a 216% increase in Nitrogen leaching despite a reduction in N inputs. Both the historical and current data sets have been modelled using the Integrated Nitrogen Model in Catchments (INCA). The process based model is shown to reproduce the historical patterns of N release from the catchment. However, modelling the increased leaching of N during recent years required an increase of the mineralization control parameter in the model, suggesting enhanced mineralization rates. Comparing historic and current soils data for C/N ratios shows that there has been a reduction in C/N from 38 to 26 in the humus layer and a reduction from 33 to 26 in the mineral soil horizon. This significant fall in C/N is consistent with the increase in N saturation in the H and Ah horizons of the major catchment soil.
