The cover Countdown 2015 From the Editor’s desk Summer in Paris Dear Members, By Belle Chung As I was humming the melodious tune of the song “Yesterday Once More” by Karen Carpenter on Radio 1. Take me to the candy shop FM 90.5, I paused for a while wondering where did What is a Parisian theme without the whimsical and 2014 go? It seems like yesterday when we were wonderful? In this light, we had a little candy stand bidding 2014 farewell amid a haze of confetti, setup. Littered with whirly lollipops, heart-shaped popping noises of champagne bottles and promising chocolates, crunchy titbits and sinful macaroons, it how we can keep the New Year resolutions. was one of the most delightful things that evening. As if these weren’t enough, we had a candy floss And it seems like last week when we completed station too. And the best part of all this – it was free all the 2014 events after all the preparatory ground flow! So, we said cheers to sinful indulgence! work. From the Earth Week in March, WE CARE in June to the Keppel Charity Golf event in Oct, we seemed to have spent our working hours in the Club so quickly. One thing for sure, those hours were worth our time after receiving positive feedback from members. Despite unsettling issues such as the non-renewal of the Club’s land lease and the alleged fraud case, our spirits will not be dampened. We are still determined to rekindle some excitement in 2015 for members to enjoy their recreational moments in the Club with more interesting events and better services. Let’s be conscious of our precious time and make sure we spend it meaningfully well. This March is going to be a happening month. Tee Top will kick in a Louisiana Seafood promotion for two days on March 13 and 14. Always daring to be different, we are going to serve the seafood boil in a bucket. Prepared in Southern Louisiana style with a local twist, members can tuck in soon with mugs of beer. Hurry! Call our hotline for pre-orders if you wish to try this dish at Tee Top before it’s gone. (See advertisement on inside left cover page for the hotline.) Good news to golfers who love movies of the comic superheroes and villains since the 1970s. You will get to meet these characters at the forthcoming WE CARE event on Saturday, March 7. Watch how the Defenders beat the Daredevils for violating golf rules on the course. Hush! 2. Draw me pretty One of the biggest attractions that evening was the caricature artist. Dressed with Parisian flair, she played well into the evening’s theme. Unassuming as she seemed, her artistry came forth the moment her marker meets paper. Tirelessly, effortlessly, she drew one portrait after another. Whilst some caricature artists would have exaggerated your worst features in the name of art and good humour, this humble lady brought out only the best in each individual.

3. Then there was the décor. In true Keppel style, every effort was made to rev up the party. Closing off the recess area just before it leads up to Keppel Hall, our staff did a wonderful job transforming the space. Panels reflecting the streets of Paris were erected. The décor took on summer inspirations as florals lined the pathway and greens dressed the pillars. Other decorative knick-knacks such as wine bottles and crates were tastefully placed to add to the Parisian vibe. So quaint was the decorative setup that it had members and guests whipping out their smart phones for “selfies” and “wefies”.

All the fun and entertainment of the evening came in threes – sand art performance, Justin Misson and Fakkah Fuzz. Without one of the three, the evening’s merrymaking would not have been complete. Tasked to open the evening’s entertainment, the sand art performance was a little pared down from the va-va-vroom laser show of 2013. But it was, nonetheless, mesmerising. Going long haul Just cruising Ms Jennifer Foo (Member)

Recent reports show that the number of Singaporeans going on long haul cruises is increasing. My husband, William and I got hooked after our first long haul Mediterranean cruise in 2006. We had been reluctant initially after our experience with a short cruise around our region. However, after a tiring three-week holiday in South America, getting in and out of airports, packing and unpacking every three days, and losing stuff along the way, we decided to give it a try. To date, we have done 28 cruises, of which 80% are One of our earlier cruises brought us up to Alaska where the landscape of long haul ones. snow, mountains and sea stand unbidden.

Why the change of heart? There are two main reasons. Firstly we get the opportunity to see many places within a single trip. Secondly, the convenience. As our “floating hotels” travel with us, we need to unpack only once. On top of that, evening entertainment and meals are easily taken care of onboard the cruise. Furthermore, everything has been planned by the Cruise line and the options provided are aplenty.

Through cruising, we have been to several interesting places in South America, the glaciers in Alaska, the Caribbean Islands, Iceland, Faroe Islands (where most of our salmon come from), the Norwegian Fjords, the Mediterranean (including romantic Greek In Machu Picchu, textbook history comes alive at the sight and proximity of islands Santorini & Mykonos), the Azores, the Canary the archaeological ruins. Islands, Casablanca, and most recently the South Pacific islands.

Amongst them, our 19-day cruise tour from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Machu Picchu, Peru was the most memorable holiday. We rounded Cape Horn in challenging sea conditions, cruised through the magnificent Chilean Fjords, visited Ushuaia which is known as the 'end of the world' because it is a city which is furthest in the south, and we ended our holiday in Machu Picchu in Peru. The visit to Machu Picchu was one that left us in awe. There is just so much history behind the Sacred Valley and the archeological ruins in the Land of the Incas. The view from the top was breathtaking. Machu Picchu is certainly a must in everyone's bucket list of places to visit!

Our feathered friends An unusual sight By Desmond Chua (General Manager)

Last November, we paid tribute to the tallest, most magnificent and much beloved Albizia. Repeatedly struck by lightning, the home to the White-Bellied Sea Eagles lost its life. On the morning of Sept 15, we were forced to cut it down. And as what we did, we mourned for wasn’t just the loss of a bit of nature. It was also the loss of a precious habitat and the animal friends that come with it.

But as Mother Nature would have it, our sorrows were short- lived. The eagles – they are back! A couple of weeks ago, a pair of young adult eagles were spotted flying around With the New Year comes a new beginning and life renewed. the remaining cluster of Albizia trees. It seemed, at first, like they were looking for the old nest. But a week into the New Year, a new nest was built and the young pair settled in. The last time we witnessed such activities from the eagles was back in 2012 when we witnessed the hatching of twin eaglets to another young eagle couple. This time round, we have our fingers crossed once again. The hope is to see yet another family of eagles blossom here at Keppel Club.

Early January also saw a family of Lesser Whistling Ducks (Dendrocygna Javanica) emerging from the bird sanctuary The Lesser Whistling Ducks feeling completely at home on our greens. located at the 12th Tee vegetation. 35th Annual Bowling Championship 2014 By Raziman Rahman

The 2014 Annual Bowling Championship was a very cosy yet competitive one with all three categories being contested by bowlers. Held on Dec 13, it was the pinnacle of the bowling calendar; a tournament much anticipated amongst our regular bowlers.

A total of 10 games was played by each bowler, at the end of which, Mr Jevin Lee, Ms Rachel Wong and Ms Nancy Lo emerged as Champions for Men’s Open, Ladies Open and Mixed graded categories, respectively.

The dinner and prize presentation was held at the swimming pool pavilion. There bowlers and family were treated to a wonderful dining ambience by the sea with a picturesque sunset view to complement. Our happy champions (from left) Ms Rachel Wong, Ms Nancy Lo and Mr Jevin Lee.
