Il n'y avait guère d'autre botaniste que M. Po:uEL qui mit fait ce dernier trajet. Chaque année la moitié du sol est en labours préparatoires qui seront ensemencés à l'automne, l'autre moitié est en moissons qui seront labourées après l'enlè vement de la récolte. Cc mode de <mlture détruit presque toutes les plantes étrangères g1·àce à la sécheresse du pays. Un petit nombre, comme le Saponaria Vaccaria L., résistent bien. Le botaniste n'y trouve plus que quelques terrains perdus, marais ou rochers. Nous n'avons pu trouver de nouveau le Faba vulgaris. Notre Celsia bipinnatifida Batt., Flore synoptique, n'avait résisté que dans un uni<JUe champ cultivé par les Arabes à l'ancienne mode. A part cela, sur 120 kilom1~tres de moissons, nous n'en avons vu qu'un pieri qui avait résisté nous ne savons comment. Cette belle espèce, qui atteint 2 mètres 50, ne poussant que dans les bonnes terres à blé et étant bisannuelle, est appelée à 1lisp:u·aître avant peu. J'en ai déposé un exemplaire à l'herbier du Muséum, et un autre à l'hcr·hier Cosson. Ce n'était plus la saison du Brassica Souliei. Dans les marais de l'Ain Sfa nous avons récolté abondamment le Darnasoni.urn polyspermum Cosson et le Festuca Lolittm Cosson et Balan sa; à la mare de Tasselent (ancienne ferme Bourlier), le Damasoniurn polyspermum, un curieux Rielfa exondé qu'a étudié M. Trabut. Cette culture intensive du Sersou est intéressante au point de vue économique et au 11oint de vue climatologique. Un des princ.ipaux faits su1· lesquels on s'appuyait pour affirmer le desséchement du sol ùu Nord de l'Afrique depuis les Romains, c'était la constatation que le niveau de l'eau, dans les puits du Sud de la Tunisie, s'était abaissé d'un mètre. L'observa tion de M. MoNTIÈRE permettrait peut-être d'expliquer autrement cet abaissement. On doit rendre grâces aux premiers colons qui ont tenté la cul ture de ces régions, en particulier les frères Pour.oT et le profes seur HouRLIER pour le Sersou ct M. LEGENDRE pour la région d'Aïn et Hatljar, au sud de Saï1la. De Tiaret à Cheddad nous n'avons rien trouvé d'intéressant jusqu'au Nadar de Tiaret. A Aïn Zarit nous avons récolté Je Papaver malvœflornm et à partir de là beaucoup d'espèces inté ressantes, dont un Silene et un Allium nouveaux. Il en sera question plus loin. Les !lunes autour de Chedùad sont remplies de débris d'œufs d'autl'Uche. Cet oiseau y exista sauvage encore longtemps après la conquète et ne fut détruit que par les chasses inconsidérées des offieiers des bureaux arabes. ~ous avons eu en outre à examiner les récoltes de beaucoup de conespondants, en particulier de notre collègue M. LAl'IE, qui explore le Djlll'djum avec zèle et succès; de MM. BtllVES, DooTTÉ, JoLY, RouAur.T DE FLEUnY, For.~<:Y pour le Maroc, du docteur DAu THEVILLEpour lepays des Touaregs, de M. Soc. bot. Fr., 1904, p. 350. Lorsque je récoltai cette plante en 1904, je n'osai l'identifier au Pavot de M. DouMERGUE, la capsule du mien étant plus allongée et ses pétales non guttés. Depuis je n'ai cessé de la eultiver, elle est devenue exacte ment pareille aux échantillons de M. DouMERGUE et se reproduit sans variations. Comme dans le P. Rhœas les pétales sont tantôt guttés, tantôt monochromes. Nous avons l'an dernier, M. TnABUT et moi, trouvé J,XVIII SESSION EXTRAORDINAIRE EN TUNISIE, AVRIL i909. ce même Pavot abondant dans un champ de Blé à Aïn Zarit, au sud du Nado1· de Tiaret et au nm·d d'El Ousseu~h. C'est une plante remarquable. Par ses feuilles, par les poi.Is appliqués des pédoncules, par le nombre des loges de la capsule, elle se rapproche du P. dubium. Elle s'en éloigne par sa petite corolle d'un mauve pâle souvent guttée et par sa capsule subglohnleuse. Elle ne saurait être assimilée it aucun des Pavots actuellement connus. II semble bien que ce soit une espèce nouvelle, inconnue jusqu'à ces dernières années et venue avec les Blés, dn Maroc ou d'ailleurs. D'autre part, il peut paraitre extraordinaire qu'un Pavot aussi visible ait pu passer inaperçu jusqu'à présent. L'hybridation ne saurait être en cause, les Pavots s'autofécon dant dans le bouton. On peut se demander si ce ne serait point un état régressif d'un Coquelicot horticole, ou bien une mutation récente. Silene Claryi nova species sectionis Oichasiosilene Rohrbach. Planta annua, pilis glandulosis brevibus subvelutina, arenam aggluti nans et prœterea pilis confervoideis nonnullis secus caules, pedunculos, calycesque hispida. Caules erecti, robusti, nodosi, 3-4 decim. longi, die ho tome ramosi. Dichotomia subregularis. Folia carnosula; infcriora ob longa, obtusa, in petiolum brevem latumque attenua ta; caulinia sessilia, acuta; media magis elongata; superiora sensim diminuta, dein bracteiformia. Flores in dichotomiis inferioril1us longe pedicellati, pedicellis quater quinquiesve capsulam wquantibus, de in sen sim diminutis, ad api cern ramo rum brevissimis. Calyx 10-13 millim. longus, oblongo-tubulosus, inferne subumhilicatus, fructifer capsula ovoidea dilatatus, apice contractus, infra capsulam anguslatus, decemnervius nervis prorninulis haud anasto mosantibus, quinquedentatus dentibus lriangulari-lanceolatis, acutis, membranaceo-marginatis, ciliatis. Petala bifida !obis obtusis, ungue calyci incluso, glabro; limho roseo, nocte tantum expanso, mcdiocri, ad faucem !amelia bipartita !obis oblongis obtusisque donato.
