'The lover that first set out on the highways of love with an empty purse went in for harder labours than Hercules. Why, I had rather wrestle with the lion, or the Hydra, or the stag, or the Aetolian boar, or the Stymphalian birds, or Antaeus, than with Love. Such a devil of a time as I'm having, just looking for a loan--and the people I ask, all they know how to answer is "Can't be done"'. This is how the same passage reads in a new, exciting translation by Amy Richlin: Bowman (to himself): 'The dude who first set out to go on the road of love without no dough, / this guy had to go through way more shit than all them Labors of Hercules. -
Amy Richlin's Iran Man and the Ethics of Translating Plautus
[ Theatralia 23 / 2020 / 2 (143—162) ] https://doi.org/10.5817/TY2020-2-8 Hic et Nunc: Amy Richlin’s Iran Man and the Ethics of Translating Plautus Clara Daniel ] Abstract Willing to challenge the classical tradition, Richlin (2005) adapted the Latin play Persa by Plautus to a contemporary context using American slang and pop culture. Richlin aims at making Roman comedy performable, popular and funny again whether onstage or in the spectrum classroom. Is her radical modernisation a form of domestication that is often criticized in [ translation studies for being unfaithful and unethical? Based upon a comparison between the original Latin text and Richlin’s version, this paper questions the ethics of faithfulness which play a major role in translation terminology, a system determined by the traditional polarity between domestication and foreignization. By highlighting the ludic nature of Plau- tus’ comedy (especially the ongoing joke with Greek culture and language), this paper ar- gues that using modern transposition is a heavily Plautine strategy suitable for recovering the immediacy of comedy. Parrish Wright Masculinity in Catullus and Platutus 95 Sexuality and Masculinity in Catullus and Plautus By Parrish Wright Plautus’ comedies gave Romans the freedom to “mock all that is Roman.”1 The plays took the stringent Roman social hierarchy and strict Roman values and turned them on their heads. In the comedies, slaves control the action and prostitutes are noble and sought-after lovers. There are scenes in which slaves are able to trick and humiliate free men, and yet throughout the works slaves are demonstrated as subservient. The abuse of slaves, both physical and sexual, is often ridiculed in the plays. Similar language is used in the invective poetry of Catullus. Catullus scathingly, sexually, and socially insults and belittles his opponents through his poetry. However, when slaves in Plautus’ comedies make fun of each other for being sexually submissive or abused, it is not intended to mock and effeminate the slaves as is the case for those who are addressed in Catullan invective. Indeed, when we consider the humor of sexual violence in the plays of Plautus within the context of Catullan invective, we realize that Plautus is mocking the aristocratic Roman notion of what it means to be a man. There are at least two stumbling blocks inherent to a comparison of Plautus and Catullus. First, it might be noted that many of Plautus’ plays are translations of various Greek plays; and second, that Plautus and Catullus were not contemporaries. But these objections can easily be overcome. Despite the fact that Greek originals Plautus worked off of have not survived, we can identify that Plautus has translated the humor and jokes into a Roman context. -

Cornelius Fronto, eminent orator, teacher of princes, has suffered from neglect and scorn since B. G. Niebuhr used it in 1816 to score points against Angelo Mai, who discovered the first half of the palimpsest and published it in 18152. Two centuries later, scholars are returning to this fractured Fabergé egg of Antonine Rome, this fasci- nating puzzle, and beginning to make amends for what Niebuhr did to it: 1 — Many thanks to the editors for their patience; to François Chausson, Maud Gleason, Elizabeth Greene, Christopher Johanson, Sandra Joshel, Christiane Kunst, Kathryn McDonnell, and Brent Vine for their kind help; and to the Loeb Classical Library Foundation, UCLA, and the UCLA Faculty Senate for funding. Existing work on insults in Plautus is largely taxonomic, with small attention to the dynamics of insult among characters or to how insults are construed within the plays. Plautus is one of the most important Latin authors, and insult is a bedrock feature of his comic style. Moreover, every type of character in Plautus’ plays—from slaves to gods—uses insult freely regardless of status and generic type, but characters do not all react to insults in the same way. Some will react calmly to extreme abuse, and others will become distraught over mild critique. This suggests that the “valence” of insult words is not stable; indeed, supposedly neutral or even positive terms can be insulting if used in certain situations. Moreover, Plautus’ plays were designed to be realized through live, physical performance, and thus to understand the insult scenes they contain, we must consider not just the textual evidence of insult usage, but also how performance details— delivery, occasion, audience—also could have influenced or even altered surface meanings found in the text.
