Deyrup & Deyrup: Insect Visitors of Saw Palmetto Flowers 711 THE DIVERSITY OF INSECTS VISITING FLOWERS OF SAW PALMETTO (ARECACEAE) MARK DEYRUP1,* AND LEIF DEYRUP2 1Archbold Biological Station, 123 Main Drive, Venus, FL 33960 2Univ. of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, KY 40769 *Corresponding author; E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT A survey of insect visitors on flowers ofSerenoa repens (saw palmetto) at a Florida site, the Archbold Biological Station, showed how nectar and pollen resources of a plant species can contribute to taxonomic diversity and ecological complexity. A list of 311 species of flower visitors was dominated by Hymenoptera (121 spp.), Diptera (117 spp.), and Coleoptera (52 spp.). Of 228 species whose diets are known, 158 are predators, 47 are phytophagous, and 44 are decomposers. Many species that visited S. repens flowers also visited flowers of other species at the Archbold Biological Station. The total number of known insect-flower relation- ships that include S. repens is 2,029. There is no evidence of oligolectic species that are de- pendent on saw palmetto flowers. This study further emphasizes the ecological importance and conservation value of S. repens. Soc. 104(3-4):226-230, 1996 MYRMECOPHILY IN KEROPLATIDAE (DIPTERA: SCIAROIDEA) The Keroplatidae, a family of the Sciaroidea (fungus gnats), are a cosmopolitan group, and, although they are encountered frequently, very little has been published on their biology. Matile (1990) revised the Arachnocampinae, Macrocerinae and Keroplatini, and included information, where known, on immature stages. Keroplatid larvae spin silk webs and are either predaceous or fungal spore feeders. The most complete account of the natural history of any predaceous member of this family can be obtained from the numerous papers on the New Zealand Glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa (Skuse), a fungus gnat with luminous larvae (see Pugsley, 1983, 1984, for a review of the literature and ecology of the species, and Matile, 1990, for morphology and a summary of biology). -

Wiesenborn1 ABSTRACT.—Phoradendron juniperinum (Viscaceae) is a dioecious, parasitic plant of juniper trees ( Juniperus [Cupressaceae]) that occurs from eastern California to New Mexico and into northern Mexico. The species produces minute, spherical flowers during early summer. Dioecious flowering requires pollinating insects to carry pollen from male to female plants. I investigated the pollination of P. juniperinum parasitizing Juniperus osteosperma trees in the Cerbat Mountains in western Arizona during June–July 2016. I examined pollen from male flowers, aspirated insects from female flowers, counted conspecific pollen grains on insects, and estimated floral constancy from proportions of conspecific pollen in pollen loads. -

CEPF Region: (Context of Lake Tegano, East Rennell, Solomon Islands) In 1998, East Rennell received World Heritage status, but the impetus to list the site in the first place came more from outside the country rather than from government officials. While the justification for listing East Rennell was for its unique environmental attributes, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture was responsible for managing the site until 2011. Over the past 14 years, the only allocation of Solomon Islands Government (SIG) funds to support East Rennell conservation activities was in 2012, after management responsibility passed to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Meteorology, and an allocation of SBD 500,000 was sent via the provincial government. However, the East Rennell villagers reported that the funds have not reached the communities. Rennell Island is unique from geographical, ecological, cultural, and historical perspectives.
