Dlamini* and Weerawan Amornsak ABSTRACT Five host ages of Maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) reared on brown rice were examined for progeny production of Theocolax elegans (Westwood). Brown rice kernels infested with S. zeamais were exposed to a mated female of T. elegans after 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 d following S. zeamais introduction. Host stages were determined by measuring head-capsule widths from all the host ages. There was a signifi cant difference (P < 0.05) in T. elegans progeny production among the different host ages. Total progeny, total female progeny and total male progeny produced by 19-day-old S. zeamais larvae were signifi cantly higher (P < 0.05) compared to the other host ages. Progeny of T. elegans raised on 19-day-old S. zeamais larvae had a higher female to male ratio compared to the other host ages. Sitophilus zeamais larvae after 13, 15–17 and 19–21 d were found to be second, third and fourth instars, respectively. It was concluded that T. elegans can develop on the second, third and fourth instar larvae of S. zeamais. However, 19-day-old (fourth instar) S. zeamais larvae produced more T. elegans progeny with a higher female to male ratio. Biodiversitas 21: 4301-4308. This study aimed to determine the fumigant and antifeedant activity of some plant essential oils against Cryptolestes ferrugineus. Essential oils were extracted from cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix), citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus), zodea (Euodia suaveolens), and clove (Syzygium aromaticum). The extraction used the maceration method with n-Hexane as a solvent. The results of the experiments showed that all essential oils have fumigant toxicity. Fumigant toxicity of kaffir lime, citronella grass, zodea, and clove oil; eggs and pupae were more susceptible than adults and larvae, while for cinnamon, pupae and adults were more susceptible than eggs and larvae. Median Lethal Concentration (LC50) of all essential oils for eggs larvae, pupae, and adults respectively, for cinnamon were 17, 24, 9, and 12 ppm, for kaffir lime were 12, 17, 8 and 15 ppm, however, on citronella grass were 11, 22, 8, and 14 ppm, for zodea were 16, 22, 10 and 20 ppm, for clove were 11, 24, 7 and 14 ppm. -

Twenty-three new provincial records are reported and nine species, Uleiota debilis (LeConte), Uleiota dubius (Fabricius), Nausibius clavicornis (Kugelann), Ahasverus advena (Waltl), Cryptolestes pusillus (Schönherr), Cryptolestes turcicus (Grouvelle), Charaphloeus convexulus (LeConte), Chara- phloeus species nr. adustus, and Placonotus zimmermanni (LeConte) are newly recorded in the re- gion, one of which C. sp. nr. adustus, is newly recorded in Canada. Eight are cosmopolitan species introduced to the region and North America, nine are native Nearctic species, and one, Pediacus fuscus Erichson, is Holarctic. All the introduced species except for one Silvanus bidentatus (Fab- ricius), a saproxylic species are found on various stored products, whereas all the native species are saproxylic. -

In this study, the olfactory responses of Theocolax elegans (Westwood), a Pteromalid wasp that parasitizes immature stages of stored-product insect pests developing inside cereal or leguminous grains, to volatiles emitted by healthy wheat grains, their hexane extracts, and different doses of three individual compounds previously identified in cereal grain odors were investigated in Y-tube olfactometer and Petri dish arena behavioral bioassays and electroantennogram recordings. In Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, odors from healthy wheat grains and their hexane extracts were attractive to both sexes of T. -

Sci., 38: 29–34. A laboratory experiment was carried out on stored wheat infested by the stored product mite Acarus siro and beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis. The initial infestation was 150 mites of A. siro and 15 beetles of O. surinamensis per 1 kg of wheat. The predatory mite Cheyletus eruditus and parasitoid Cephalonomia tarsalis were added in the ratio 1:20 and 1:12, repectively. Three combinations were tested: (1) mites and (2) beetles separately, and (3) mites and beetles together. The experiment ran for three months at 22°C and 75% RH. The pests were suppressed by their antagonists in all combinations. Synchronous application of both natural enemies resulted in better control of O. surinamensis through an enhanced effect of both antagonists. Introduction The insect infestation affects the food manufacturing and other industries greatly. Recently, many controls have been developed in order to avoid this pest attack from happening. The methods used include chemical, biological, and cultural control (i.e Integrated Pest Management).
