Ecology and diversity of the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea, Papilionoidea) of Cufada Lagoon Natural Park (Guinea-Bissau) Abstract: In this new contribution to the knowledge of the butterflies of Guinea-Bissau, conclusions are presented on the ecol- ogy of the species known from the Cufada Lagoons natural park (PNLC); their richness, density and diversity as well as the similarities between the ten square kilometre UTM areas occupied by the Park are discussed; the PNLC is a protected area of Quinara Province and considered as a Ramsar site. Introdução Estudos recentes relativos à lepidopterofauna da Guiné- Entretanto, atendendo ao interesse biológico da área, Bissau (Bivar-de-Sousa & Mendes, 1999; Bivar-de-Sousa et havia sido aprovado em Novembro de 1997 o Projecto al., 2007; Bivar-de-Sousa, Consciência & Mendes, 2008; «Parque Natural das Lagoas de Cufada» integrando a União Bivar-de-Sousa, Mendes & Consciência, 2008; Consciência Europeia (EU) e a União Internacional para a Conservação et al., 2008, 2009; Mendes & Bivar-de-Sousa, 2003, 2006 e da Natureza (UICN), os então Instituto para a Cooperação Mendes et al., 2007, 2008) permitiram um claro aumento do Portuguesa (ICP), Instituto de Conservação da Natureza conhecimento sobre as borboletas diurnas (Lepidoptera: (ICN) e Instituto Nacional de Investigação Científica (INIC) Hesperioidea e Papilionoidea, os ropalóceros) que ocorrem por parte de Portugal, bem como a Direcção Geral do naquele país mas também, e em especial devido ao volume Ambiente (DGA) e o Instituto Nacional de Estudos e do material examinado, sobre as que voam no Parque Pesquisa (INEP) por parte da Guiné-Bissau – a componente Natural das Lagoas de Cufada (PNLC), área protegida com científica foi atribuída ao Instituto de Investigação cerca de 700 km2 na província de Quinara, no centro-oeste Científica Tropical (IICT) em Lisboa. Tal abriu caminho à do país (Fig. 1). Apesar de o PNLC se estender por 15 quadrados UTM com 10 km de lado (todos no fuso 28P, Fig. 2), as áreas ocupadas em 6 deles (DU70, EU00, EU01, DT79, DT78 e DT88) são reduzidas sendo, para mais, de acesso complicado; assim, os estudos apenas foram Aguiar (2002), Mendes & Bivar-de-Sousa (2002), Pinheiro realizados nos outros 9 quadrados, correspondentes, (2002, 2004), Rosa & Crespo (2004) e Rosa et al. (2001, todavia, à quase totalidade da superfície do PNLC. Na sua maioria o material encontra-se depositadas na colecção aracno-entomológica do IICT e na colecção particular do primeiro co-autor, tendo-se reexaminado as amostras determinadas por Bacelar (1949). Em simultâneo, actualizam-se os conhecimentos sobre a fauna de lepidópteros ropalóceros do Parque Natural das Lagoas de Cufada (PNLC). A distribuição geográfica conhecida de cada uma das espécies no país é representada em mapas UTM com quadrícula de 10 Km de lado. Referem-se três espécies de Papilionidae e um género e quatro espécies de Pieridae como novidades faunísticas para a Guiné-Bissau e três espécies de Papilionidae e dois géneros e sete espécies de Pieridae são novas para o PNLC, no total das trinta e uma espécies até ao momento encontradas nestas famílias (nove, e vinte e duas, respectivamente) no país. This study presents the first comprehensive inventory of species composition and diversity of insects of the Reserve. Insects were surveyed between September 2011 and June 2012 to capture the end of the rainy season, the dry season and the peak of the wet season. Samples were taken from two sites within the Reserve, Dagomba and Oku using various sampling techniques including pitfall traps, malaise traps and sweep nets. Insect com- munities were characterized in terms of, 1) species richness estimators, 2) species richness, 3) Shannon-Weiner Index of Diversity, 4) Pielou’s evenness and 5) Bray-Curtis similarity.

Type-species: Ypthima itonia Hewitson, by original designation. The genus Ypthimomorpha belongs to the Family Nymphalidae Rafinesque, 1815; Subfamily Satyrinae Boisduval, 1833; Tribe Satyrini Boisduval, 1833; Subtribe Ypthimina, Reuter, 1896. The other genera in the Subtribe Ypthimina in the Afrotropical Region are Ypthima, Mashuna, Mashunoides, Strabena, Neocoenyra, Coenyropsis, Coenyra, Physcaeneura, Neita, Melampius, Cassionympha, Pseudonympha, Paternympha and Stygionympha. Ypthimomorpha (Marsh Ringlet) is an Afrotropical genus containing a single species. Closely related to the genus Ypthima. Several of the species of Ypthima from Asia have genitalia like those of Ypthimomorpha and more properly belong in this genus (Kielland, 1990d: 86). Odonata, Coleoptera Cetoniidae and Lepidoptera Rhopalocera were collected during 2006 from the Lokoli swampy forest. 24 Odonata species were listed, with 13 new species for Benin, including Oxythemis phoenicosceles Ris, a rare species, and Ceriagrion citrinum Campion, an endangered species on the IUCN red list, which suggest that this forest should be made a nature reserve. 12 flower beetles species were listed, most of them live only in forests. Cyprolais aurata (Westwood) is known to be a species living only in swampy rainforests and Grammopyga cincta Kolbe is known in Benin only in Lokoli and in Ouémé valley. Among 75 butterflies species, 28 are new to Bénin and only 9 occur strictly in forests. The uncommon species Eurema hapale Mabille, E. desjardinsii regularis Butler and Acraea encedana Pierre live only in swampy areas. The Lokoli swampy rainforest is ecologically unique in Benin and contributes to regional biodiversity, therefore it must become protected as nature reserve.
