For Freeman’s face, pho- tographs of four different Valve employees–David Speyrer, Eric Kirchmer, Greg Coomer and Kelly Bailey–were combined to produce a rather generic- looking composite.1 In the final design, Freeman is a bearded, bespectacled, unexceptional individual in his late twenties. During the events of Half-Life, Freeman was the unwitting cause of a catastrophic accident at the high-security Black Mesa Research Facility, resulting in the opening of an interdimensional portal. From the rift a slew of hostile, nightmarish creatures emerged, against which Freeman was forced to do battle. The events of Half-Life 2 (Valve, 2004) and further entries in the series–Half-Life 2: Episode One (Valve, 2006), Half-Life 2: Episode Two (Valve, 2007), and Half-Life: Alyx (Valve, 2020)–take place some time later in a dystopian future, following Earth’s subjugation by a brutal alien empire known as the Combine.     Revista MUZICA Nr. 3 / 2021 STUDII Șase exerciții de muzicologie postadleriană Oleg Garaz În spaţiul culturii europene muzicologia se prezintă ca ştiinţă şi poate fi considerată drept procedură de cunoaştere şi asimilare a artei muzicale în ambele ei accepţii ‒ compoziţie şi interpretare. Pentru prima există o listă curriculară cu discipline precum armonia, contrapunctul, analiza scheme compoziţionale, cunoscută ca analiza forme muzicale, şi orchestraţia, dar şi istoria gândirii muzicale ca istorie a compozitorilor sau a tipologiilor istorice (stilistice) de practici componistice, disciplină formulată într-o sintagmă eufemistică, în egală măsură incompletă şi eronată, ca istoria muzicii. Pentru a doua există, de asemenea, două tipuri de abordare muzicologică ‒ istoria artei interpretative sau tipologii stilistice ale interpretării muzicale şi, bineînţeles, o disciplină muzicologică orientată pe evaluarea valorică a interpretării vocale şi instrumentale precum critica muzicală. Şi aceasta din urmă deţine o naraţiune cronologică-evolutivă ‒ istoria criticii muzicale. După Adler, ar mai exista un al treilea compartiment ‒ naraţiunea comparativă ‒ cunoscută în prezent drept etnomuzicologie. Compoziţia, interpretarea şi comparatistica muzicală sunt, în fapt, cele trei balene, ţestoase sau elefanţi care se constituie ca piloni ai gândirii şi practicii muzicologice. Deja aici este amorsat un prim „conflict” metodologic deoarece este vorba despre două căi divergente ca substanţă sau domenii eterogene ca metodă ale gândirii ‒ artisticul prin definiţie intuitiv, imaginativ şi astfel intens generativ şi ştiinţificul prin definiţie raţional, analitic şi astfel deconstructiv.     Down the hallway, there's the pulpy sound of a crowbar ku-thunking into the soft-as-a-peach outer layer of skin on some organic lime-green colored creature. To the left, one hears the rat-a- tat-like resonance of a machine gun spewing bullets, followed by the tings of scores of empty shell casings hitting the ground. To the right, there's silence - almost. It's a quiet room, the silence broken only by the hollow cadence of fingers furiously tapping away on a keyboard. A window provides a beautiful view of the Lake Washington, a stark contrast to the rest of the room, littered with hundreds of pieces of computer hardware, multiple monitors, a white board, and more than a few Diet Coke cans. One of the monitors is alive with lines of code - the technical language that makes a computer game run. There are no ku-thunks or rat-a-tats in this room.
