Preda Buzescu – the Grand Ban of Craiova (1602-1608)

Prof. , PhD., ”Vasile Goldis” University of the West, Arad Abstract: During the 17th century, the grand ban of Craiova was the most important high official of Wallachia, most coveted by the big boyars, big dime with authority in the counties west of the river Olt. Preda Buzescu great dignity ban occupied briefly in the fall of 1600, called Michael the Brave Preda Buzescu Wallachian boyars filohabsburgice leader was an excellent military commander, who has proved his talent in fighting the Turks, decided partisan alliance with the Emperor Rudolf II. No other ban had the autority of Preda Buzescu, between 1602-1608, in the counties west of river Olt, during the 17th century. He had a chancellery that issued documents without invoking the authority of the prince regnant. Preda Buzescu has ordered the Wallachian*s army. For services faithful to the great dime Preda Buzescu full advantage of his generosity Radu Serban. Few months before his death Preda Buzescu, Radu Serban confirms his dominion over the villages Fauresti,, Novaci, Susani, Rudariu and Seaca. The Balkan Vlachs/Aromanians Awakening, National Policies, Assimilation Miroslav Ruzica Preface The collapse of communism, and especially the EU human rights and minority policy programs, have recently re-opened the ‘Vlach/Aromanian question’ in the Balkans. The EC’s Report on Aromanians (ADOC 7728) and its separate Recommendation 1333 have become the framework for the Vlachs/Aromanians throughout the region and in the diaspora to start creating programs and networks, and to advocate and shape their ethnic, cultural, and linguistic identity and rights.1 The Vlach/Aromanian revival has brought a lot of new and reopened some old controversies. A increasing number of their leaders in Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Albania advocate that the Vlachs/Aromanians are actually Romanians and that Romania is their mother country, Romanian language and orthography their standard. Such a claim has been officially supported by the Romanian establishment and scholars. The opposite claim comes from Greece and argues that Vlachs/Aromanians are Greek and of the Greek culture. Both countries have their interpretations of the Vlach origin and history and directly apply pressure to the Balkan Vlachs to accept these identities on offer, and also seek their support and political patronage. Only a minority of the Vlachs, both in the Balkans and especially in the diaspora, believes in their own identity or that their specific vernaculars should be standardized, and that their culture has its own specific elements in which even their religious practice is somehow distinct. The recent wars for Yugoslav succession have renewed some old disputes. Parts of Croatian historiography claim that the Serbs in Croatia (and Bosnia) are mainly of Vlach origin, i.e. -

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies. -
Gheorghe Bucur on His 70Th Birthday
GHEORGHE BUCUR ON HIS 70TH BIRTHDAY Professor Gheorghe Bucur was born on January 26th 1939 in Br˘ane¸sti, Dˆambovit¸a. He attended high school in Pucioasa, graduating in 1956; from the very beginning, his teachers and schoolmates recognized and praised him for his exceptional gift for mathematics, along with other future Romanian talented mathematicians as Constantin N˘ast˘asescu, Constantin Nit¸˘a,Vasile Oproiu, Drago¸sS¸tefan, a.s.o. During the high school years (1953-1956) he won numerous prizes at the Olympiads in mathematics, and he was a problem solver at Gazeta de Matematic˘a¸siFizic˘a. Between 1956-1961 he attended the Faculty of Mathematics of the C.I. Parhon University in Bucharest, where he had a pleiad of outstanding professors like Miron Nicolescu, Constantin Ionescu Tulcea, Simion Stoilow, Dan Barbilian, Alexandru Ghika, Romulus Cristescu, etc. His innate talent for mathematics brought about his nomination as a university assistant by Miron Nicolescu at the Department of Analysis of the Faculty of Mathematics. Since 1968 he acted as a senior scientific researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy. In the period 1995-2009 he worked as a professor at the Department of Analysis of the Faculty of Mathematics of the Univer- sity of Bucharest, being also a head of this department between 2000-2009. At present, he is a consulting professor at the University of Bucharest. He also worked as a professor, firstly at the Facult´edes Sciences of Tunis (1991-1993) and then at the Facult´edes Sciences of Monastir, Tunis (1994-1995). -

Journal of Greek Linguistics 11 (2011) 249–257 brill.nl/jgl Review Article Doing without the Fez: Greek Language Questions Christopher Gerard Brown Th e Ohio State University [email protected] Abstract Th is defi nitive history of the Greek Language Controversy shows how Greek’s status as a prestige language galvanized a national movement attracting various ethnicities of the Millet-i rum . Th e status of classical Greek resonant in Adamantios Korais’s katharévousa helped consolidate the Greek state. An alternate demoticist programme, anticipated by Katartzis, developed in the Ionian Islands, and formulated by Psycharis, took hold through the eff orts of the Educational Demoticists. Standard Modern Greek is a synthesis of the two programmes—neither the phono- logically puristic Romaika of Psycharis nor an archaizing Schriftsprache, it retains elements of both. Since 1976 the Language Question that agitated the Greek-speaking world for some two hundred years is history, and in Peter Mackridge it has found its historian. Th e Language Controversy, as Mackridge translates the Greek το γλωσσικό ζήτημα, was a debate about nature of the Greek language, its historicity and perennity. Both sides wanted a standard national language to symbolize the continuity of Hellenism, a patent of succession to the prestige and authority of classical antiquity. Partisans of the puristic Schriftsprache sought to teach and improve a fallen people, to restore lost continuity and make them worthy of their heritage. -
The Real Estate of the Moldavian Boyar Dumitru Buhuş
Anişoara IONAŞCU∗ THE REAL ESTATE OF THE MOLDAVIAN BOYAR DUMITRU BUHUŞ Abstract: This study presents the role played by the boyar Dumitru Buhuş in the political life of Moldavia during the first half of the 17th century, as a result of the important positions he held within the princely council (cubicularius, logothete, treasurer, great treasurer, pârcălab/castellanus of Hotin and Neamţ, great spatharios) and his nobiliary estates gathered throughout his life, representing his wealth and power. The study underlines, on the basis of chancery documents, his lands, the way they were acquired, the counties where his domains were scattered. It also identifies the boyar’s real estates, as well as the courts he built. Keywords: Moldavia, Dumitru Buhuş, Real Estate, Romanian Nobility, 17th century. * This paper aims to succinctly analyse the role that the boyar Dumitru Buhuş played in the political life of Moldavia during the first half of the 17th century, when he held major public dignities – cubicularius, logothete, treasurer, great treasurer, castellanus of Hotin and Neamţ, great spatharios1 –, and was, thus, member in the princely council. In the same time, the presentation follows the implications that these high political–administrative offices had at a material, patrimonial level, regarding the fortune he gathered, which served as the foundation of his high social status.
