Ramadorai graduated in Physics from Delhi University. He Members holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Devang V. Khakhar Director, IIT Bombay Telecommunications from the Institute of Science, Bangalore, and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Nominees of the Council California, Los Angeles. In 1993, Mr. Ramadorai attended the Sloan Dr. S. Sivaram CSIR Bhatnagar Fellow School of Management’s highly acclaimed Senior Executive A 201, Polymer and Advanced Development Programme. Materials Lab. Starting his career in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as a trainee engineer, in 1972, National Chemical Laboratory, Mr. Ramadorai rose to become its CEO in 1996 – when the company’s revenues were at Dr. Homi Bhabha Road, $155 million – and has since led the company through some of its most exciting phases, Pune – 411 008 including its going public in 2004. In October 2009, Mr. Ramadorai stepped down as CEO – leaving a $6 billion global IT services company to his successor – while taking over Dr. Ajit Ranade Chief Economist the mantle of Vice Chairmanship of the company. He is on the Boards of a number of non-Tata companies Physics and Material Science, and educational institutions, including Hindustan Unilever Ltd., BSE Ltd., and the MIT Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Sloan School of Management (EMSAB). Homi Bhabha Road, Navy Nagar, Colaba, Mr. Ramadorai was recently appointed as the Chairman of National Skill Development Mumbai – 400 005. Corporation (NSDC), the public-private partnership arm of the Government of India for creating large, for-profit vocational institutions. This is not his first foray into public service. Prof. Dinesh Singh Vice Chancellor, In 2011, The Government of India had appointed him as the Adviser to the Prime Minister University of Delhi, in the National Council on Skill Development, in the rank of a Cabinet Minister. Recently, Delhi – 110 007. the Council was subsumed under the NSDA. Mr. Ramadorai is a well-recognised global leader and technocrat who has participated in the Nominees of the State Governments Indian IT journey from a mere idea in 1960’s to a mature industry today. It provides a ratio- nale for why we needed our own society. It pro- vides a list of the founding members of the com- munity that came together to establish AAAI. Starting a new society comes with a whole range of issues and problems: What will it be called? How will it be financed? Who will run the society? What kind of activities will it engage in? and so on. This article provides a brief description of the consider- ations that went into making the final choices. It also provides a description of the historic first AAAI conference and the people that made it happen. The Background and the Context hile the 1950s and 1960s were an ac- tive period for research in AI, there Wwere no organized mechanisms for the members of the community to get together and share ideas and accomplishments. By the early 1960s there were several active research groups in AI, including those at Carnegie Mel- lon University (CMU), the Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Stanford Research Institute (later SRI Interna- tional), and a little later the University of Southern California Information Sciences Insti- tute (USC-ISI). My own involvement in AI began in 1963, when I joined Stanford as a graduate student working with John McCarthy. After completing my Ph.D. in 1966, I joined the faculty at Stan- ford as an assistant professor and stayed there until 1969 when I left to join Allen Newell and Herb Simon at Carnegie Mellon University Raj Reddy.

Mr. Satyarthi’s efforts led to the adoption of ILO Convention 182 on worst forms of child labour in 1999. He is also the founding president of the Global Campaign for Education, an exemplar civil society movement working to end the global education crisis and GoodWeave International for raising consumer awareness and positive action in the carpet industry.

    KEYNOTE Prof. Raj Reddy Robotics Institute Simon University Professor & School of Computer Science professor Raj Reddy is one of the world's leading experts on robotics and artificial intelligence. The director from 1979 to 1992 of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His interest in civil engineering led him to study at the University of Madras College of Engineering, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1958. Soon after finishing his undergraduate work in India, Reddy moved to Australia,. While in Australia, Reddy worked as an applied science representative for the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) in Sydney. His primary job used computers for structural analysis. During his post-baccalaureate education his interest and course of study changed from the civil to the computer engineering disciplines. Reddy moved to the United States in 1963 and received his doctorate from Stanford in 1966. He joined the faculty of Stanford University as an assistant professor of computer science. In 1969 he moved to Pittsburgh and joined the Computer Science Department of Carnegie Mellon University. It was here that Reddy began his study of the rapidly expanding fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. He was named director of the Robotics Institute in 1979. Reddy has focused on two areas within the field of robotics: automatons capable of performing manufacturing and assembly-line tasks, and fully autonomous vehicles for land, sea and air operations. Aiming to make this goal a reality, Reddy developed an interdisciplinary program at the Institute that trains students in mechanical engineering, computer science, and management in order to give them the background they need to design the complex robotics manufacturing systems of the future.
