New knowledge gives us power for change: for good or ill, for knowledge is neutral. The problems we face go well beyond technology: problems of living in harmony with nature, and most important, living in harmony with each other. Information technology, so closely tied to the properties of the human mind, can give us, if we ask the right questions, the special insights we need to advance these goals.” Herbert Simon , 1916 – 2001 Nobel Laureate in Economics, 1978 7 Preface Technology remains as the fountainhead for human development and economic growth.

AI Magazine Volume 26 Number 4 (2006)(2005) (© AAAI) 25th Anniversary Issue The Origins of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Raj Reddy ■ This article provides a historical background on how AAAI came into existence. It provides a ratio- nale for why we needed our own society. It pro- vides a list of the founding members of the com- munity that came together to establish AAAI. Starting a new society comes with a whole range of issues and problems: What will it be called? How will it be financed? Who will run the society? What kind of activities will it engage in? and so on. This article provides a brief description of the consider- ations that went into making the final choices. It also provides a description of the historic first AAAI conference and the people that made it happen. The Background and the Context hile the 1950s and 1960s were an ac- tive period for research in AI, there Wwere no organized mechanisms for the members of the community to get together and share ideas and accomplishments. By the early 1960s there were several active research groups in AI, including those at Carnegie Mel- lon University (CMU), the Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Stanford Research Institute (later SRI Interna- tional), and a little later the University of Southern California Information Sciences Insti- tute (USC-ISI). My own involvement in AI began in 1963, when I joined Stanford as a graduate student working with John McCarthy. After completing my Ph.D. in 1966, I joined the faculty at Stan- ford as an assistant professor and stayed there until 1969 when I left to join Allen Newell and Herb Simon at Carnegie Mellon University Raj Reddy.

  • The Drive for Autonomy CELEBRATING the 10TH ANNIVERSARY of the DARPA URBAN CHALLENGE VICTORY
THE MAGAZINE OF CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE The Drive for Autonomy CELEBRATING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DARPA URBAN CHALLENGE VICTORY WINTER 2017 ISSUE 11.2 WINTER 2017 cvr1 CMU’s Video Analysis Toolbox allows for easier tagging of large quantities of videos gathered in war-torn regions. Can computers help protect human rights? Computer Science at CMU Alex Hauptmann, a research professor in the Language underpins divergent fields and Technologies Institute, thinks so. Hauptmann and his team endeavors in today’s world, all of which LINK SCS to profound create tools that help solve the difficult problem of analyzing, advances in art, culture, nature, processing and indexing videos captured in war-torn the sciences and beyond. countries like Syria. Viewing and hand-tagging videos collected from disparate sources to make them searchable and relational is a difficult task. Add to that the need to tag thousands upon thousands of videos, all with subtle contextual differences, and it can overwhelm humans. Computer tools developed by Hauptmann’s team help human rights professionals amass evidence against perpetrators of injustice for criminal trials. Though it’s often difficult for computers to distinguish what defines torture, bombings aimed at civilians and other such crimes of war, the end goal is to make it easy to later find videos that relate to one another, gather evidence and build strong legal cases against perpetrators. cvr2 THE LINK WINTER 2017 1 The Link Winter 2017 | Issue 11.2 The Link is the magazine of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science, published for alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends.

That brings me to the topic of this talk, “To As a second-generation artificial intelligence dream the possible dream.” AI is thought to be an (AI) researcher, I was fortunate to have known and impossible dream by many. But not to us in AI. It worked with many of the founding fathers of AI.
