  • Serial Historiography: Literature, Narrative History, and the Anxiety of Truth
SERIAL HISTORIOGRAPHY: LITERATURE, NARRATIVE HISTORY, AND THE ANXIETY OF TRUTH James Benjamin Bolling A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Minrose Gwin Jennifer Ho Megan Matchinske John McGowan Timothy Marr ©2016 James Benjamin Bolling ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Ben Bolling: Serial Historiography: Literature, Narrative History, and the Anxiety of Truth (Under the direction of Megan Matchinske) Dismissing history’s truths, Hayden White provocatively asserts that there is an “inexpugnable relativity” in every representation of the past. In the current dialogue between literary scholars and historical empiricists, postmodern theorists assert that narrative is enclosed, moribund, and impermeable to the fluid demands of history. My critical intervention frames history as a recursive, performative process through historical and critical analysis of the narrative function of seriality. Seriality, through the material distribution of texts in discrete components, gives rise to a constellation of entimed narrative strategies that provide a template for human experience. I argue that serial form is both fundamental to the project of history and intrinsically subjective. Rather than foreclosing the historiographic relevance of storytelling, my reading of serials from comic books to the fiction of William Faulkner foregrounds the possibilities of narrative to remain open, contingent, and responsive to the potential fortuities of historiography. In the post-9/11 literary and historical landscape, conceiving historiography as a serialized, performative enterprise controverts prevailing models of hermeneutic suspicion that dominate both literary and historiographic skepticism of narrative truth claims and revives an ethics responsive to the raucous demands of the past.

  • Chronicler's Guide
1985 Emilio gnawed at his fingernail, the same damn finger, the left ring finger that no longer carried a wedding ring. Every night, he bit it. Sometimes he worried at it, gnawing until the white edge came off in a strip, peeling back to the cuticle and needing to be chomped, leaving a tiny flap that would catch on loose threads and draw his thumb to fidget. Or he could peel it and then pull, hard, painfully tearing it out where the nerves were. Or if he was disciplined he would file that excess length down, or trim it with clippers. It didn’t matter. Every night, when Emilio awoke, that half-broken length of left ring-fingernail would be back, the same, restored like his hair and his immortal flesh. Some nights, he even managed to leave it alone. Not very often though. Emilio was restless. He was not the type to let things go. “No, not ‘Brainchildren,’ ‘Rain Children’. As in, water that falls from the sky. Yes. Thank you.” He was sitting on a hotel room bed, with the curtains drawn and the lights off. To Emilio’s eyes, plenty of light was seeping through the curtains, crawling under the crack of the door, urine- yellow streetlight glow was plenty for him to dial by. He was in Portland and he didn’t like it, but he’d tracked the book to the coast and now, maybe, to this library… “You have? Splendid, that’s… now, this next question is a little, erm, queer. Odd, I mean.

  • How Do Readers Understand Character Identities
How do readers understand the different ways that characters behave when they appear in both the text and paratext of the same comic? Mark Hibbett, PhD student at University of the Arts London. Comics characters have a long history of being used for advertising purposes, perhaps most famously in the long-running series of advertisements for Hostess fruit pies, in which superheroes thwart evildoers through judicious use of processed confectionaries. A great example of this appears in "Fury Unleashed," a strip which appeared in Marvel comics dated April 1982. In it, Captain America realizes that neither his shield nor his superhuman strength can save Nick Fury, so instead throws Hostess fruit pies at his friend's captor, distracting him long enough for the heroes to escape. However, when Cap faces a similar scenario in Captain America #268, published that same month, he chooses to surrender himself to save his friends rather than simply providing a dessert option for his enemies. How are readers of Captain America #268 meant to understand what is going on? Are they expected to view these two versions of Captain America as different characters who just happen to look the same, or is something else going on? Another example of this tension between text and advertisement paratext appears in Fantastic Four #200, a double-length issue featuring a duel to the death between Mr Fantastic and Doctor Doom, with a center-spread advertisement in which Doom implores his own fans to enter a competition run by a candy company to ensure that fans of superheroes don't win instead.

  • Drug Narratives in Comic Books
“They say it’ll kill me…but they won’t say when!” Drug Narratives in Comic Books By Mark C. J. Stoddart University of British Columbia The mass media play an important role in constructing images of drug trafficking and use that circulate through society. For this project, discourse analysis was used to examine 52 comic books and graphic novels. Comic books reproduce a dominant discourse of negative drug use which focuses on hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine. These drug narratives set up a dichotomy between victimized drug users and predatory drug dealers. Drug users are depicted as victims who may be saved rather than criminalized. By contrast, drug dealers are constructed as villains who are subjected to the ritualized violence of comic book heroes. The construction of drug users and drug dealers is also marked by gendered, racialized, and class-based patterns of representation. Keywords : drugs; comic books; discourse analysis; cultural criminology INTRODUCTION For most of us, the mass media have provided a window on the social world beyond the confines of our daily lives. It is through the media that many of us have learned about spheres of social power and deviance with which we may have rarely come into direct contact. In the case of illicit drugs, many people’s understanding of drug users and drug trafficking has been shaped by both the factual accounts of news media, as well as the fictional accounts of film or television. For example, for those who are not members of the subcultural world of drug use, heroin use has been made imaginable through the Vancouver Sun’s coverage of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (Bohn, 2000; Kines, 1997; Sarti, 1992), or through films such as Trainspotting (Macdonald & Boyle, 1996) or The Basketball Diaries (Heller & Kalvert, 1995).

The most influential among them, Martin Scorsese, has been quoted as referring to Marvel films as “theme parks” rather than “cinema” (his own term for auteur film).
