ABSTRACT South Africans experienced dramatic changes in the political and social orders of their nation during the 1990s. The long history of white minority rule officially ended in 1994 with the first democratic, all-race elections. During the political transition, a broad- based women's movement emerged and gender equality became an autonomous aspect of democratization in South Africa. Most of the scholarship on South Africa's political transition focuses onchanging race and class relations and ignores shifting gender relations. In this dissertation, I take up the question of shifting gender relations in post­ apartheid South Africa by examining grassroots efforts of women athletes to transform gender and race relations through sports. South African sport is of particular interest because the new government is using sport as a unifying mechanism in the nation- building process. To understand women athletes' contributions to transforming gender and race relations, I conduct a case comparison analysis of women's competitive netball and soccer using both qualitative and quantitative data and methodologies. I base the analysis on 48 semi-structured interviews, 381self-administered surveys, archival evidence, and participant observations. 1 draw from collective identity theory, as articulated in the social movement literature, and feminist theories of the interlocking systems of race, gender, and class inequalities. 1 bridge these two theoretical perspectives to expand our understanding of the ways structural inequalities both facilitate and impede ti Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. This analysis demonstrates that through the construction o f new collective identities, women netball participants are actively challenging dominant racial hierarchies and inequalities and women soccer participants are challenging dominant gender hierarchies and categories. This research contributes to current debates among South African scholars and activists about the sustainability of a racial diverse women's movement and the development of theories on the dialectics of race, gender, and class. This study vividly illustrates that South African women are not a unified, homogenous group who shares common interests. Sisterhood, or a collective consciousness or identity, among South African women can only be forged through concrete historical practices. Finally, this analysis adds to the literature on gender and social movements by demonstrating the role of movement actors in transforming racial and gender categories and hierarchies. in Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.     APARTHEID LAWS & REGULATIONS : INTRODUCED AND RESCINDED A Short Summary The absurdity of apartheid legislation, which incorporated legislation passed by the (minority) white governments prior to 1948, is reflected in the following list . Although the legislation was seemingly passed in the interest of the white minority, to maintain both political and social hegemony, it is obvious that most of the measures carried little or no economic benefit for the ruling class and that its scrapping would be in the interests of the capitalist class as well as the majority of blacks . For blacks the end of apartheid laws meant that the hated pass system was abolished, that the legality of residential apartheid was removed from the statute book and that antu education was formally ended . Nonetheless there was little freedom for the poor to move from their squatter camps or township houses and most children still went to third rate schools with few amenities to assist them . It was only a section of the wealthier blacks and those who ran the political machine that benefited most fully from the changes . The vast majority saw no improvements in their way of life, a matter that is dealt with in this issue of Searchlight South Africa . It is also not insignificant that many measures were repealed before the unbanning of opposition political movements and before negotia- tions got under way. The pressure for change came partly from the activities of the internal resistance movement and the trade unions, from covert discussions between movements that supported the government and the ANC, from the demographic pressure that led to a mass migra- tion to the urban areas and also from the altered relations between the USSR and the west - a change which was interpreted by the govern- ment as removing the communist threat from the region .

    Ralph Glücksmann Apartheid Legislation in South Africa I. Introduction On 31 May 1910 the Union of South Africa was formed as a dominion in the British Empire. It was exactly eight years after the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging, which had brought the Second Anglo-Boer War to an end and stipulated full British sovereignty over the Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State. Although the South Africa Act 1909 (9 Edw. VII c. 9) was passed by the British Parliament at Westminster, it was wholly constructed by South African representatives in South Africa. Agreement had not been reached without acrimony, and there were times when it seemed that the national convention of representatives of the four colonies Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Orange River might break up among recriminations. Malvern Chiweshe, Jabulile Mavuso, Catriona Macleod Critical Studies in Sexualities and Reproduction, Psychology Department, Rhodes University, South Africa Introduction The decision-making process regarding how to resolve a pregnancy refers to the time spanning from the moment the woman realises she is pregnant until a decision has been made as to whether to carry the pregnancy to term or terminate the pregnancy (Kjelsvik & Gjengedal, 2011). Relatively little research has been done on the decision-making process itself (Lie, Robson & May, 2008). Recently, Coast, Norris, Moore and Freeman (2014) have tried to document the abortion decision-making process by using data from different countries and coming up with a framework that tries to cover the different aspects of abortion decision-making. While research by Coast et al (2014), and similar research, will help towards greater understanding of what abortion decision-making entails, the approach used within this kind of work is not without limitations. Research on abortion decision-making (including Coast et al.’s 2014 study) has tended to employ a health determinants approach where factors or influences that are seen to affect abortion decision-making are explored (Harvey-Knowles, 2012; Mdleleni-Bookholane, 2007, Schuster, 2005). For example, among a sample of women who attended Umtata General Hospital in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, to terminate a pregnancy, Mdleleni-Bookholane (2007) identified the following as factors that led to the abortion decision: the extent to which the pregnancy was intended, willingness or ability on the part of the woman to make the adjustments necessary to include a child in her future life, and awareness of the availability of abortion.

The post-independence Nigeria and the apartheid regime in Pretoria relations were sour and confrontational, while it was friendly between Nigeria and the liberation movements in South Africa, especially with the African National Congress (ANC). It was more so because Nigeria adopted Africa as the centerpiece of its foreign policy, and committed itself to the total liberation of the African continent from colonialism and racism. Nigeria staged untiring opposition to colonialism on the African continent, and the racism that existed in South Africa before 1994. The beginning of a new era started in the final days of apartheid in South Africa when President de Klerk visited Nigeria in April 1992 to discuss bilateral issues, mostly trade relations. The paper examines, however, Nigeria and South Africa’s diplomatic fluidity since re-establishing formal relations in 1994 in order to understand the causes of the misunderstanding and the effect on both countries’ relations and suggest better ways to foster their relations.
