Causes of the disease

Since 01.January 2007 totally 13 outbreaks of ND have been reported in backyard poultry flocks in Republic of Bulgaria.

1. 08.01.2007 - village of Gigen, municipality of Guliantsi, administrative district of ; 2. 06.02.2007- village of Kostelevo, municipality of Vratsa, administrative district of Vratsa; 3. 21.07.2007- village of Medeni polyani, municipality of Velingrad, administrative district of Pazardjik; 4. 30.08.2007 – primary outbreak in the village of Kravoder, municipality of Krivodol, administrative district Vratsa; 5. 12.09.2007– secondary outbreak in the village of Radovene, municipality of Roman, administrative district Vratsa; 6. 12.09.2007 - secondary outbreak in the village of Ruska bela, municipality of , administrative district Vratsa; 7. 14.09.2007 - secondary outbreak in the village of Krapetc, municipality of Mezdra, administrative district Vratsa; 8. 17.09.2007 - secondary outbreak in the village of Smolyanovci, municipality of Montana, administrative district Montana; 9. 27.09.2007 - secondary outbreak in the village of Moravitsa, administrative district Vratsa; 10. 27.09.2007 - secondary outbreak in the village of Galatin, administrative district Vratsa; 11. 05.10.2007 - secondary outbreak in the village of Borovan, administrative district Vratsa; 12. 05.10.2007 - secondary outbreak in the village of Ohoden, administrative district Vratsa; 13. 23.09.2007 - primary outbreak in the village of Vidno, municipality Kavarna, administrative district of Dobrich; Outbreaks of ND in the Republic of Bulgaria for 2007 Presumed source of infection of ND in Vratsa and Montana region

{ the presumed source of infection is illegal trade of birds during the incubation period of the disease.

{ there is a national road connection (E 79) between the first outbreak in village of Kravoder and the secondary outbreaks in the Vratsa and Montana regions. { For control of the disease the National Veterinary Service of Republic of Bulgaria has taken all the measures provided for in Council Directive No. 92/66 of the European Union.

According to the Law of Veterinary Activity the owners of destroyed birds have been compensated by the national budget. Vaccination

{ The emergency vaccination was done of all birds located in the affected municipalities.

{ The vaccine was administered intranasally.

{ The vaccination was performed with the CEVAC NEW L – strain La Sota and re-vaccination 4 weeks after the initial vaccination with CEVAC NEW K - inactivated oil emulsion vaccine against Newcastle disease in birds; Vaccinated birds in the affected regions
