COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

STORMWATER Management Training Series Spring 2016 Stormwater Coalition of Registration is from 8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Monroe County Soil & Water Monroe County Classes are held from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Conservation District STORMWATER PROJECT DESIGN FROM PLANNING TO NOI PART II (2/3/2016)- Back by popular demand, this comprehensive class will guide participants through the many steps of site planning, design, evaluation and reporting necessary for obtaining NYSDEC stormwater permit coverage in New York. We will work with a specific site (different than last year’s) beginning with the evaluation of pre-developed conditions and project objectives. Site planning, stormwater practice selection and design will follow. Computations for WQv, CPv, OBv, ExSv, and RRv will then be completed. The class will conclude with the completion of the project’s SWPPP outline, the NOI, and the establishment of a maintenance program for the site’s stormwater facilities. Representatives from NYSDEC Central Office will also participate in the class, providing an opportunity for participants to interact directly with the regulatory agency on issues relating to the Construction Permit and Design Manual.

RETROFITS AND REDEVELOPMENT: THE NEW FRONTIERS (3/2/2016)- The latest development trends are focusing on redevelopment and retrofits of previously disturbed landscapes. Applying stormwater management practices to this type of development is proving to be one of the most effective ways to reduce and even improve stormwater impacts in a watershed. This class will review the permit requirements, and the stormwater practices most suitable for application to previously developed areas. Participants will be computing hydrology, water quality volumes, and RRv for selected practices applied on specific retrofit and redevelopment sites. The results will then be assessed for regulatory compliance and ability to meet watershed objectives.

HELPING HANDS FOR MS4’S (3/30/2016)- All across New York, the engineering community provides essential assistance to municipalities that are designated MS4’s. This class, co-instructed with Andy Sansone of Monroe County, will review the MS4 permit, each of the Minimum Measures, and other regulatory requirements that obligate participating municipalities. Topics to be covered include the various kinds of inspections, reviews and reporting that are necessary for MS4’s. Particular focus will be placed on Pollution Prevention, Illicit Discharge and the varied requirements of Construction and Post-construction, with an emphasis on engineering elements. The class will also include the preparation of a typical MS4 annual report, and will cover what to expect from a DEC and EPA MS4 Audit. Representatives from NYSDEC Central Office will also participate in the class, providing an opportunity for participants to interact directly with the regulatory agency on issues relating to the MS4 permit.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF GI (5/4/2016)- As green infrastructure continues to be applied on projects across the state and country, what are some lessons we are learning? How are they performing? How do we care for them? How can this evolving knowledge be applied to specific project conditions? This class, co-instructed with Tim Toland, RLA of SUNY ESF, will review the draft GI design, performance and maintenance standards that Tim and others are developing with NYSDEC for incorporation in the Stormwater Management Design Manual, and then apply them to specific sites. Class work will include practice selection and sizing, the development of planting plans, and maintenance standards for residential, commercial, and urban sites.

THE NEW BLUE: THE UPDATED NYSDEC E&SC MANUAL (6/8/2016)- After more than three years of development, the newest version of NYS’s technical standards for Erosion and Sedimentation Control is/(will soon be) in effect. This edition, authored by the legendary expert, Don Lake, incorporates many new techniques and technology for managing runoff, stabilizing soil, and containing sediment. This class will provide an overview of the newly organized manual, and then use the outlined practices and techniques to compute soil losses, design practices and prepare erosion and sedimentation control plans, construction sequences, and maintenance requirements for specific constructions sites. And best of all: We have coaxed Don temporarily out of his self-imposed teaching “retirement” to co-present this class!
