Aptly named Genesee County (Gen-nis’-hee-yo is for “The Beautiful Valley”), this quaint, mostly-rural area has been attracting visitors and residents since before the days of horse-and-buggy.

For centuries, was the home of the Iroquois Indian Nation. After the Revolutionary War, most of the Seneca migrated to Ontario, Canada, but the Tonawanda Band of Seneca Indians split from the rest of the tribe and settled in the region. Then, the Holland Land Purchase opened the county to European settlement in 1801. New frontier families used well-worn Indian trails, which eventually became the roads you see today, and established Genesee as a meeting place.

Innovation is what sets the folks of Genesee apart. Some local firsts: Ingham was the first women’s University in the country, the first free rural mail was delivered in Elba, the world’s first business incubator opened in Batavia in 1959, and The New York State School of the Blind was established here in response to the men blinded in the Civil War. There are so many “firsts”—and you’ll have fun discovering them for yourself!

In Genesee County, we strive to make a difference; directing our efforts towards making our community a better place. Genesee County is a 21st century community — citizens and their government working in partnership for the benefit of all.

Our residents feel secure knowing that our neighborhoods are safe. Children can ride their bikes, play in their backyards, and walk around town with friends without concern.
