This page gives you some helpful instructions for using it. All dump stations are listed by state. Those located along interstate highways are noted first and then you will find others listed in descending order. Interstates are indentified by their highway number from smallest to largest. All other dump stations are listed by city or town in alphabetic order. Dump Stations On Interstates Dump station found on interstates are listed in chart form (an example is below). Depending on what direction you are traveling, you can view the chart up or down. When driving from the East or the North, view up the chart. Of course you will read the chart downward when traveling from the South or the West. In the sample on the right, you will notice exit #s are listed in bold. The "description" column shows the city, town, street, or highway listed from the exit. Underneath the exit you will notice a list for each site Interstate Highway that has a dump station. A Word About Mile Markers & Exit Numbers Mile markers or mile posts are the little green signs you see on the side of highways which are placed at all 1 mile sections. Mile markers are posted on the most southern or western point in any given state. Here's an example: If you are traveling into Colorado from the state of New Mexico, you will see that the mile marker numbers increase as you begin travel from the North through Colorado. On the other hand, if you were to enter into Colorado from Utah, you will notice the numbers increase as you head east through Colorado. The only state which does not have mile markers is California. They use a post mile system with numbering beginning and stopping at county lines. There are two different methods used to determine interstate exit numbers. The most common is based on the mile marker system. This means that the first exit number on an interstate as you travel south to north or west to east is determined by the distance measured from the state line. An example would be if an exit were to be located between mile marker 4 and 5, it would be marked as Exit 4. The very next exit, if it were located at marker 8.7, would be marked as Exit 8. This lets you know you must travel about 4 miles to come to the next exit. This method is particularly helpful in determining the location and distance needed to travel to a desired exit. Ultimate RV Dump Station Guide Page 4 Yet the second method used in numbering interstate exits is known as the "consecutive numbering system. This means the interstate exit numbers begin at the most southern or western point and will increase consecutively as you head north or east. With this method, the first exit as you drive south to north or east to west will be Exit 1. Subsequent exits will be Exit 2, Exit 3 and on and on. There are only a few states incorporating the "consecutive numbering" system. California is changing their mile market system. The exit numbers and mile markers they now use are listed in this guide and are based on the new numbering system used by the state of California.
