Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Freshers › Colleges Societies YUSU Campus City Domestic Survival Sport The Freshers’ Soundtrack Music Editor Chris Owen offers some album recommendations for your first weeks at University, whether you’re studying, partying or missing home Tuesday 29 September 2015 There are lots of decisions to make in your first weeks at university: what should I wear, which societies should I join, what should I eat, would it be a good idea to jump in the lake, et cetera, et cetera. As seasoned students, we hope that we can impart some wisdom to make things easier (the answers to those questions are anything, all of them especially Nouse, anything, and absolutely not, in case you were wondering). As the paper’s resident Music nerd, I’ve taken it upon myself to help with some choices of a musical nature, so you can concentrate on deciding the important things. Below are some albums that might come in handy for various points in your first few weeks at university – and if you absolutely have to jump in the lake, do it to some Queen. For pre-drinking Arriving at agreement for the pre-drinks music can be trickier than you’d think, especially in the face of that overbearing Music student flatmate and the wasted one who only wants to listen to ‘Uptown Funk’. But there are plenty of agreeable options to flesh out a playlist to appeal to all. The Killers – Hot Fuss You’ll be hearing ‘Mr Brightside’ at least twice a night each time you go out, so you’d better make sure you learn all the words beforehand if you don’t know them already. -

Name of course: MA Thesis North American Studies Date of submission: 15 August 2018 The work submitted here is the sole responsibility of the undersigned, who has neither committed plagiarism nor colluded in its production. Signed Name of student: Claudia Gielis Gielis /3 Abstract Masculinity and femininity can be performed in many ways. The emo genre explores a variety of ways in which gender can be performed. Theories on gender, masculinity and femininity will be used to analyze both the lyrics and the music videos of these two bands, indicating how they perform gender lyrically and visually. Likewise a short introduction on emo music will be given, to gain a better understanding of the genre and the subculture. It will become clear that the emo subculture allows for men and women to explore their own identity. This is reflected in the music associated to the emo genre as well as their visual representation in their music videos. This essay will explore how both a male fronted band, My Chemical Romance, and a female fronted band, Paramore, perform gender. All studio albums and official music videos will be used to investigate how they have performed gender throughout their career. -

24 NOVEMBER 2017 / FREE EVERY FRIDAY BEST THE YEAR OF BEST ALBUM OUR LORDE TRACK Hello... I SAY THIS EVERY YEAR, and I always mean it, but this year I really, really mean it – 2017 was a great year for music. So many excellent albums, so many excellent tracks. As ever, we’ve Oh boy, Charli XCX has compiled them controversial done well, very well, lists that will make some in NME’s Tracks of you happy and some of Of The Year p31 you mad. Something that we can hopefully all agree on is that much of the rest of 2017 has been monumentally awful. Donald Trump is exactly the kind of wand we imagined he would be when he became President of America, and our own leader, Theresa May, is a turd that needs flushing down the golden pan of Downing Street. Sadly, chief s**t-kicker Jeremy Corbyn didn’t become PM in June, but don’t think there wasn’t a revolution – it happened, and you were all part of it. One day you’ll be in charge, and the world will be a better place for it. 22 Back to music, and this Review of the year issue week’s cover star basically owned the year. Lorde Albums. Tracks. Films. Recent queerbaiting research has focused almost exclusively on television, leaving gaps in the ways queer representation is negotiated in other media forms.
