Swindal, Ph.D. Chair, English Dean, McAnulty College and Graduate Professor of English School of Liberal Arts Professor of Philosophy iii ABSTRACT “individual yet as one”: PERFORMING DEAFNESS AND PERFORMING COMMUNITY IN MARK MEDOFF‟S CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD By Mariah Crilley May 2013 Thesis supervised by Laura Engel, Ph.D. In this thesis, I examine the relationship between deafness, women, and performance in Mark Medoff‟s Children of a Lesser God. The play was a massive popular success, both in its run on Broadway and its movie adaptation. Deafness and deaf people had never been so visible in American hearing culture. More importantly, the play coincided with civil rights movements by people with disabilities, which culminated in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Disabilities, including deafness, were called into being as part of a national identity. These movements posited self- determination but ultimately relied and thrived on a communal and relational sense of identity. I argue that the play challenges individualistic modes of identification through its protagonist, Sarah, a deaf woman whose “voice” is always translated through the audience. The play overtly and politically calls for a reconceptualization of American iv identity along the lines of deaf or disability and female identity theories, which typically value community and interdependence over individualism. Dr. Elisabeth Zinser, a Ph.D from the University of California at Berkeley (Green), spent years in “helping fields,” such as “nursing and educational psychology,” (Mask 187), was “an expert on language and communications” (Piccoli), and had previously held the prestigious position of vice- chancellor at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro (“Elisabeth Zinser”). By all rights, Dr. Zinser was more than qualified for the position and should have been welcomed by students, faculty, and staff alike at Gallaudet. Within the day of her appointment, however, she was being burned in effigy. Unfortunately for Dr. Zinser, Deafness was not counted among her list of accomplishments. She was hearing. Unwittingly, but perhaps all the more dangerously, Dr. Zinser had accepted a position in an already volatile environment with little understanding of Deafness, its complex cultural aspirations, historical subjugation, resistance to a disabled identity, and, most importantly, its tongue, American Sign Language (ASL). Even before Dr. Zinser‟s official appointment, Gallaudet‟s campus was ripe with indignation. Despite going 124 years without a deaf president, the University‟s board seemed to be leaning towards the only hearing candidate of the remaining three potentials. Gallaudet‟s students, staff, and alumni were discouraged by the University‟s blatant paternalism—after all, these students were being taught to be self-sufficient and professional, “to excel in work and life” (Piccoli). The appointment of yet another hearing person to a position of power over some of the brightest Deaf people in the 1 world, to a position that should have always belonged to a Deaf person but never had, quite visibly demonstrated just how very little their higher education stood for when threatened by impenetrable misapprehensions and simple yet lethal stereotyping. Even in the 80s, the Hearing world still considered the Deaf unfit to manage their own affairs. In defense of the assignment, the chairman of the board said “„deaf people are incapable of functioning in a hearing world‟” (qtd. in Mask 188). While the “chairman later claimed that her interpreter had misconstrued her statement” (Mask 188), the fact remains that the chairman needed an interpreter. Despite being the head of the only liberal arts college for D/deaf people in the world, she did not know ASL, and therefore could not communicate with those who she represented. In 1988, Deaf students at the premier—really the only— higher education institute available to them, couldn‟t carry on a conversation with their chairman. So, they revolted. After the announcement, students poured into the streets of D.C., illegally marching to the hotel where the board was meeting. The police attempted to halt the deaf students‟ actions, but their dissent quite literally fell on deaf ears. The outraged students organized and effectively shut down the school‟s campus, barricading entrances with school buses on flattened tires (Mask 188). They boycotted classes, held rallies, burned imitations of Dr. Zinser and the chairman of the board, and rallied for a “Deaf President Now!”—the eponymous battle cry of the revolution, often shortened to DPN. Led by Greg Hlibok, student body president, the students drew up a list of demands, which included, 1. Resignation of Dr. Zinser and selection of a deaf president. 2 2. Resignation of Mrs. Spilman [the chairman of the board, a hearing woman] and election of a deaf chairperson of the Board. 3. Change of the composition of the Board to a majority of deaf and hard of hearing persons. 4. Guarantee of no reprisals against the faculty, staff, administration, or students for their participation. (“DPN Fact Sheet”) The administration eventually implemented all of these reforms. Dr. Zinser stepped down after a massive media blitzkrieg, the chairman resigned, Dr. I King Jordan was appointed President, the board was reorganized, and students suffered no repercussions (Mask 191). In part, the success of the movement was directly contingent on media coverage and an overwhelming support from the public. The vast majority of America considered the Deaf students‟ revolt just and necessary and support surged in from all over the country. Students marched with a “We have a dream!” banner, uniting the DPN protests with the Civil Rights Movement (Mask 190). In fact, many of the protests directly borrowed rhetoric, strategies, and goals publicized by Black Americans in the 1960s. The protests were not a matter of childish rebellion intended to miss a few classes, but a

    Introduction The Playwright There are writers who say, "It 's good to have written, .. and there are writers who say, "It's good to write . .. I'm ofthe latter sort. Mark Medon: 2003 Mark Medoff writes stories. He writes stories not only because he wants to, but also because he must. This somewhat selfish, self-absorbing, but nonetheless privileged and gratifying undertaking - as he describes it - inhabits him, much like the characters of his playscripts, screenplays, and novel insinuate themselves into his consciousness, whether or not he invites them. For Medoff, writing crystallizes human behavior; it dissects, massages, and textures thoughts and concerns which preoccupy him constantly and insist upon some sort of conceptualized release. This release is prolific and takes the form of fiction and nonfiction; screenplays, lyrics, librettos, and a novel; full-length, one-act, musical, non-musical, adult, family, and holiday plays. Writing cleanses Medoff of the sullying influences of world events and enables him to exorcise demons. The process by which this happens is habitual. In deeply concentrated work throughout early to late morning or afternoon hours, Medoff dismisses his perceptual, analytical self and allows pent up musings to spill out unabated, like so much projectile vomit (Mr. Medoff apologizes for this graphic but accurate analogy). Sometime around early afternoon, he escapes to the gym or some sports activity. For Medoff, exercise is an indispensable life function and a profoundly important formative influence dating back to the tender age of five or , 2 six when his athletically accomplished father first taught him to throw and catch a ball.

    Phyllis Frelich 1944-2014 Early Life ● On February 29, 1944 during a leap year, Phyllis was born Deaf in Devils Lake, North Dakota. ○ Frelich was a part of a large family of nine children, all who were Deaf, along with her father, a typesetter, and her mother, a seamstress. ● Phyllis attended the North Dakota school for the deaf, but states that she still faced prejudice against sign language due to it not being considered a language yet. She accounts that when she was little “[her] teacher would slap [her] hand with a ruler if [she was] caught singing in class.” College ● Even after facing some prejudice in her childhood, Frelich still continued her education at Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University) in Washington, D.C. ○ While there, Phyllis took interest in their theater program, but Gallaudet did not offer a degree in the field at that time. Phyllis was encouraged to get a Library Science degree by others who felt that she could follow whomever she married and pick up work at a library. ○ Although Phyllis did acquire a Library Science degree, she continued to pursue her passion for the theater after graduating by helping to build the National Theater of the Deaf (NTD) in Waterford, Connecticut. Entering the Acting World ● Frelich met her husband, Robert Steinberg, who was working as a scenic designer. ○ Through Robert when they were living in Rhode Island, Phyllis met playwright Mark Medoff, who had never had a Deaf friend before. ● Medoff vowed to learn ASL after being captivated by it while Phyllis shared her frustrations regarding the limited acting roles for the Deaf.

One older sister, Christina, was also deaf. She attended the ND School for the Deaf from 1916 to 1929. Christina Class of 1929 Skilled Acrobat Philip was a very good Philip acrobat. By age 8 he was a star member of the ND School for the Deaf tumbling team. During his performances, he was 1925 often known as Popeye. 1929 1930 Philip – age 13 The NDSD tumbling team was well-known for its acrobatic stunts. People traveled from across the state to watch the tumblers perform. 1934 In high school, Philip played as a guard on the NDSD Bulldogs basketball team. Nearly all of the technical aspects associated with personal computing—small computers, microproces- sors, keyboard-based interfaces, individual usability—were available in 1972. As early as 1969, Honeywell had released the H316 “Kitchen Computer” priced at $10,600 in the Neiman Marcus catalog, and in 1971 John Blankenbaker had intro- duced the Kenbak-1 priced at $750 and Steve Wozniak and Bill Fernandez had built their Cream Soda Computer—so named because they drank Cragmont cream soda as they built the computer with chips discarded by local semicon- ductor companies. But the idea of using computers as personalized tools that augmented the autonomy of individuals only took root because of the efforts of hobbyists and engineers.1 According to some, the first shot of the personal computing movement was in 1966 when Steven Gray founded the Amateur Com- puting Society and published a newsletter for hobbyists, which became a model for hobbyist clubs around the coun- try. At that time, large firms such as IBM or DEC were dedi- cated to a centralized conception of computing in which the mainframe was tended by a priesthood of managers, engi- neers, and operators who prevented users from touching and working with the computer. My study highlights how deaf people sought to place themselves within mainstream society through their activism to protect and advance their status as citizen-workers. Their activism centered on campaigns against peddling. Those campaigns sought to protect the public image of deaf people as worker-citizens while protecting their language and cultural community. The rhetoric surrounding impostorism and peddling reveals ableist attitudes; anxieties about the oral method supplanting sign language based education for the deaf; fears and insecurities about deaf people’s place in the American economy; class consciousness; and efforts to achieve full social citizenship. Deaf people’s notion of equal citizenship was that of white male citizenship with full access to economic opportunities. Their idea of citizenship extended to the legal and social right to employment and economic self-sufficiency. This is a historical account of the deaf community’s campaign during the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century to promote deaf people within American society as equal citizens and to improve their access to economic opportunities.

The residents compensated for this condition by inventing or borrowing an efficient sign language, which was used by almost everyone, hearing and deaf alike. Although the last hereditary deaf person in Chilmark died in 1952, some of the older residents still remember the days when everyone spoke sign language. From the memories of these informants and a wealth of archival material, Nora Groce has compiled a detailed, vivid description ofdaily life on the Vineyard in the early days ofthis century. She shows the extraordinary degree to which deaf people were integrated into the community, for Vineyarders did not consider deafness to be a handicap. Curiously enough, both the high incidence of deafness and the adoption of sign language resulted from marriage patterns brought by the original settlers when they emigrated in the seventeenth century from the English county of Kent.

    National Theatre of the Deaf Public Testimony before Appropriations Committee By Gary Greco, Board Member March 2, 2015 My name is Gary Greco, and I am a proud Board member of The National Theatre of the Deaf. For more than 40 years, NTD has provided both artistic and educational performances to a wide range of audiences around the world and around the country. This is truly one of Connecticut’s cultural crown jewels! NTD continues to perform and educate audiences and more importantly, dispels negative misperceptions about Sign Language and Deafness. I want to explain to you all who serve on the Appropriations Committee that I am also a parent of a Deaf child. When our son was as young as three years of age, we took him to watch an NTD performance, “on the green” one summer day in Chester. At that time, NTD was headquartered in Chester, CT, and this was a part of NTD’s free summer performance series. His eyes lit up watching the artistic flow of American Sign Language as stories were told. My son saw shapes and objects come to life while the actors described various scenes depicting animals, cars, ships, and other characters. This was when he first fell in love with NTD. As he grew older, he “assisted” in an audition with hearing children for a Christmas show that the company was going to perform. Now in college, my son recalls that day, and has expressed an interest in joining the company.
