    Canadian Journal for Studies in Discourse and Writing/Rédactologie 51 Volume 29, 2019 http://journals.sfu.ca/cjsdw Article Learner-Created Podcasts: Fostering Information Literacies in a Writing Course Stephanie Bell York University Abstract This paper describes an experimental learner-created podcasting assignment in a first-year undergraduate research skills course for professional writers. The podcasting assignment serves as a contextualized experiential writing project that invites students to refine their research skills by participating in the invention of an emerging genre of radio storytelling. The power of the podcast assignment lies in the liminal space it creates for learners. It moves students beyond familiar and regimented essay conventions to an unstable writing environment where digital tools for producing, publishing, and negotiating meaning offer a range of possible audiences, modalities, forms, and modes of meaning making. This space creates the pedagogical conditions for epistemic development, through which students adopt as their own the research practices of adept and experienced writers. The multiple demands of this course on writing, research, and digital environments generates the beginnings of interdisciplinary writing pedagogy involving Kent’s (1993, 1999) postprocess mindset, the ACRL’s (2015) Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, Baxter Magolda’s (1999) constructive-developmental pedagogy, and Arroyo (2013)’s elaboration of participatory digital writing pedagogy. Literacy, Technology and Discernment: Investigating the Role of Information Technology in Literacy Education Abstract Regardless of geography, segments of the population struggle to read and write. This struggle is so pronounced that literacy has become an issue for many governments, and policies have been set in place to help ensure a literate society. Educators, in their struggle to respond to the problem, have looked to a variety of methods to help children become literate. One prominent means is the use of information technology and computer-assisted instruction. Because of its significant ole,r it is necessary for the Christian educator to examine the impact of computer technology, to investigate the role and extent of use of information technology in the classroom, and to form guiding principles that direct the purchasing and use of such technology. When the aforementioned is carefully examined and Biblical discernment is used in making decisions, information technology and computer-assisted instruction can be effectively employed to help students become literate citizens in society.

For this study, we first used the concept of “apparatus” in Foucauldian (1977) and Agambenian sense (2009). After this analysis, we calledon Bachelard(1932) and his distinction between phénoménotechnique and phénoménographie. Making strides towards innovation in the Bay Area, six years later, Bannon got a call from Chicago. At the time, Mayor Rahm Emanuel was looking for a new leader for the Chicago Public Library. “He was really interested in looking at ways of leveraging the unique mission and footprint of the library to be transformative as part of his new vision for the city,” said Bannon. Bannon got the job. And for three and a half years, he’s been serving as commissioner of the Chicago Public Libraries. And as the second largest library system in the country, CPL has a long track record for being an innovative library organization. When Bannon first started, the library was piloting a program called YOUmedia, a digital media program engaging teens in learning. Now he has helped operationalize the program as a central part of what CPL does to serve teens. “It represents for me the kind of library that would have been welcoming to me as a kid,” Bannon said. “The mission is really to connect people to Brian Bannon, the 2015 iSchool Distinguished Alumnus, considers himself ideas and knowledge to make a stronger and more competitive and an unlikely librarian. Dyslexic as a kid, he never felt fully at home in the democratic society. It was an insight into how libraries might lead the environment.

  • What Is Braille
    Search Braille was first developed about 1820 by a young Frenchman named Louis Braille. He created Braille by modifying a system of night writing which was intended for use on board ships. He did this work as a very young man and had it complete by the time he was about 18. He and his friends at the school for the blind he attended found that reading and writing dots was much faster than reading raised print letters which could not be written by hand at all. The development of this system by young Louis Braille is now recognized as the most important single development in making it possible for the blind to get a good education. It took more than a century, however, before people would accept Braille as an excellent way for the blind to read and write. Even today many people underestimate the effectiveness of Braille. While tapes and records are enjoyable, Braille is essential for note taking and helpful for studying such things as math, spelling, and foreign languages. Experienced Braille readers, however, read Braille at speeds comparable to print readers--200 to 400 words a minute. Such Braille readers say that the only limitation of Braille is that there isn't enough material available. Braille consists of arrangements of dots which make up letters of the alphabet, numbers and punctuation marks. The basic Braille symbol is called the Braille cell and consists of six dots arranged in the formation of a rectangle, three dots high and two across. Other symbols consist of only some of these six dots.

    A human-editable Sign Language representation for software editing—and a writing system? Michael Filhol [email protected] LIMSI, CNRS, Université Paris Saclay Orsay, France Abstract To equip SL with software properly, we need an input system to rep- resent and manipulate signed contents in the same way that every day software allows to process written text. Refuting the claim that video is good enough a medium to serve the purpose, we propose to build a repres- entation that is: editable, queryable, synthesisable and user-friendly—we define those terms upfront. The issue being functionally and conceptually linked to that of writing, we study existing writing systems, namely those in use for vocal languages, those designed and proposed for SLs, and more spontaneous ways in which SL users put their language in writing. Ob- serving each paradigm in turn, we move on to propose a new approach to satisfy our goals of integration in software. We finally open the prospect of our proposition being used outside of this restricted scope, as a writing system in itself, and compare its properties to the other writing systems presented. 1 Motivation and goals The main motivation here is to equip Sign Language (SL) with software and foster implementation as available tools for SL are paradoxically limited in such digital times.
