Cohen Billionaire investor Steve Cohen is once again trying to sell his pricey penthouse in midtown Manhattan. After several failed attempts at selling the 9,000 square foot apartment, Cohen relisted it with a drastically reduced price tag of $79 million dollars, or $8,777.00 per square foot. That is a whopping 30 percent lower than Cohen's original asking price. Corcoran Group, which has the listing, told CNBC Tuesday, the unit re entered the market "just a few weeks ago." Read MoreSteve Cohen rebrands The SAC Capital founder first tried to offload the apartment for $115 million in April 2013. But after failing to attract any buyers, Cohen reduced the price on the four bedroom, five bath apartment to $98 million dollars. When that didn't work, Cohen cut the price another $16 million dollars, before taking it off the market altogether in December of 2013. Ultra highend real estate agent Dolly Lenz, who has sold an unprecedented $10 billion in property over her career, told CNBC's"Power Lunch" Tuesday Cohen made a rare misstep and timed the market wrong, by waiting too long to reduce the price. data:text/html;charset=utf8,%3Cdiv%20class%3D%22storytop%22%20style%3D%22webkittaphighlightcolor%3A%20rgba(32%2C%20119%2C%20182… 1/2 7/23/2015 Steve Cohen still can't sell his $79 million penthouse "At the time it was initially on the market, it was the only game in town in terms of uberluxury, glass penthouses in the sky," said Lenz. "Two years later, there are at least ten brandnew buildings in midtown Manhattan in direct competition, most with lower asking prices and large terraces. Selling now is a very tough go." Corcoran describes the Charles Gwathmeydesigned duplex as "a unique New York City treasure." The chairman and ceo of Point72 Asset Management, has a net worth of $11.4 billion dollars. Forbes ranks Cohen as the 44th richest person in the United States Read MoreSteve Cohen's Point72 up 7.5% in Q1 Cohen's closest neighbor is Warren Buffett's deputy, Ajit Jain, who purchased the building's only other duplex in 2011 from Marc Dreier, the former lawyer now serving a 20 year prison term for committing investment fraud. Jain, a potential frontrunner for the top job at Berkshire Hathaway, paid $8.9 million for the 6,000 square foot penthouse, which boasts the building's largest private terrace. Cohen's place, directly next door, with 3,000 additional square feet, costs $70 million more, and doesn't have a single outdoor space. Jane Hall: Hello and welcome to American Forum Café, a podcast production of the School of Communication at American University in Washington DC. I'm Jane Hall, I'm an associate professor here at SOC. I teach courses on politics in the media and advanced reporting. Before coming to AU I was a journalist covering the news media for many years in New York. In my Politics in the Media class we look at the intersection of contemporary politics and media coverage, and boy are politics and the media intersecting. Colliding, actually, and influencing each other. As part of my class students have the opportunity to participate in American Forum Town Halls and one on one conversations with journalists, political strategists, politicians, and other important players. My students in Advanced Reporting also play an important role in our programs. They are interviewing other college students about our topics as well as asking our guests questions during our events. Jane Hall: Recently, Congressman Steve Cohen, Democrat from Tennessee spoke with my classes and other students at AU. What you'll hear on this episode is the recording from that event. Congressman Cohen is best known for introducing Articles of Impeachment last year against Donald Trump. With the Democrats winning a majority in the House of Representatives impeachment had become a real possibility. And Congressman Cohen is chair of an important subcommittee on the House Judiciary Committee where impeachment could begin. He is playing an important role in other committees as well. He is the first Jewish Congressman from Tennessee, as well as he represents a majority black district.

Gillian Laub (b.1975, Chappaqua, New York) is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in comparative literature before studying photography at the International Center of Photography, where her love of visual storytelling and family narratives began. Laub’s first monograph, Testimony (Aperture 2007), began as a response to the media coverage during the second Intifada in the Middle East, and a desire to create a dialogue between apparent enemies. This work is comprised of portraits and testimonies from Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, Lebanese, and Palestinians all directly and indirectly affected by the complicated geopolitical context in which they lived. Laub spent over a decade working in Georgia exploring issues of lingering racism in the American South. This work became Laub’s first feature length, directed and produced, documentary film, Southern Rites that premiered on HBO in May 2015. Her monograph, Southern Rites (Damiani, 2015) and travelling exhibition by the same title came out in conjunction with the film and are being used for an educational outreach campaign, in schools and institutions across the country. Southern Rites was named one of the best photo books of 2015 by TIME, Smithsonian, Vogue, LensCulture, and American Photo. It was also nominated for a Lucie award and Humanitas award. "Riveting...In a calm, understated tone, Southern Rites digs deep to expose the roots that have made segregated proms and other affronts possible. Southern Rites is a portrait of the inequities that lead to disaster on the streets of cities like Baltimore and Ferguson, Mo.” - The New York Times Laub has been interviewed on NPR, CNN, MSNBC, Good Morning America, Times Talks and numerous others.

  • Tennesseans in National Government
SECTION V Tennesseans in National Government INTRODUCTION Throughout the state’s rich political heritage, Tennesseans have played important roles in shaping the character of our nation’s government. Three presidents — Jackson, Polk, and Johnson have called Tennessee home. Many other elected and non-elected offices have been held by Tennesseans as well. Albert Gore Jr. served as vice president; former Senator Howard Baker served as Republican leader of the U.S. Senate and White House chief of staff under President Ronald Reagan; current Senator Lamar Alexander served as secretary of education under President George H. W. Bush; former Senator Bill Frist served as majority leader of the U.S. Senate; Cordell Hull served as secretary of state under Franklin Roosevelt; Jo Byrns served as speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and there have been many others. Today, Tennesseans remain influential in all levels of the federal government. This has proven to be an asset for the people of the state, as the federal govern- ment has assumed an increasing role in the many facets of state government. Over one-third of the state’s annual budget is derived through federal programs. Individually, many Tennesseans are employed by the U.S. Government. Others rely on benefits received through the Social Security System, the Veterans Ad- ministration, and numerous other federal programs. The value of having fellow Tennesseans in national government is important to Tennessee both as a state and individually. Members of Congress also carry out a vital role for Tennesseans in the federal government. Members of Congress are not only responsible for making federal law and overseeing the administration of the U.S.

  • SAC Capital Advisors to Pay $1.2 Billion Fine in Insider Trading Case
Case 1:12-cr-00121-RJS Document 319 Filed 11/12/13 Page 1 of 195 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT DOCUMENT SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK ELECTRONICALLY FILED DOC#: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA LDATE FILED: !f~ \1:-'"'1; " -v- No. 12 Cr. 121 (RJS) MICHAEL STEINBERG, ORDER Defendant. RICHARD 1. SULLIVAN, District Judge: The Court is in receipt of the attached letter, motion, and supporting documents submitted by Defendant. Defendant's motion requests (1) a three month adjournment of his trial to allow the recent publicity surrounding SAC's guilty plea to dissipate; and (2) "individualized, searching questioning of all potential jurors who have been exposed to" recent SAC pUblicity. In addition, Defendant requests permission to file his motion under seal. For the reasons set forth below, the Court denies the sealing request, denies the request for an adjournment, and grants the request for individualized questioning of all jurors who have been exposed to SAC pUblicity. There is a general presumption of open access to judicial records, especially where the records are relevant to a Court's determination of a litigant's substantive rights. United States v. Amodeo, 71 F.3d 1044, 1049-50 (2d Cir. 1995). The Court sees no factors to counterbalance that general presumption in this case. Defendant points to the risk of pretrial publicity, but there is no reason why this motion presents any greater risk for pretrial pUblicity than any other motion. Accordingly, the request to seal the motion is denied. The Court acknowledges that there has been a great deal of pretrial publicity relating to this case, especially within the last several weeks.

Japan’s Pivot to Normalcy: Interpreting Tokyo’s Security Policy Revolution Ilai Z. Saltzman Government Department Claremont McKenna College Prepared to be delivered at the FLACSO-ISA Joint International Conference, Buenos Aires, July 23-25 2014. ‐ 1 ‐ JAPAN’S PIVOT TO NORMALCY: INTERPRETING TOKYO’S SECURITY POLICY REVOLUTION The issue of China’s rise has occupied considerable scholarly attention in since the early 1990s. Recent domestic political developments in Japan suggest, however, that we should also pay close attention to Tokyo’s changing foreign and security policy. Rather than continuing a ten-year cut in the budget, this year the decision was made to actually increase it. Furthermore, Shinzō Abe’s government approved a new interpretation of Article 9 that facilitates the shift from basic self- defense to collective self-defense. The objective of this paper is to identify the causes and features of this dramatic and significant security policy reorientation. INTRODUCTION It has become a cliché to argue that China is rising. There seems to be no scholar or practitioner who can deny the fact that, given this development, a tectonic geopolitical and geostrategic change is taking place in East Asia. The only open question revolves around China’s ultimate objectives.1 In a dramatic decision, the Japanese government approved on July 1, 2014, the country’s right for collective self-defense, a reinterpretation of the Constitution that would allow Japan’s armed forces to provide military assistance to allies under attack even if Japan is not under direct attack.2 Defined by The Japan Times as “a landmark shift in the postwar defense posture”, by the Yomiuri Shimbun as “an indispensible step” or by the Asahi Shimbun as a “controversial policy shift” and the Mainichi Simbun as “impermissible”, this revision, once approved in the Japanese parliament will revolutionize the way Tokyo conducts it foreign and security policy vis-à-vis its 1 The literature on China’s ris is truly vast and it will be impossible to mention all of these studies.
